Cell Theory

• All living things are made up of cells. • Cells are the smallest parts of all living

things. • All cells come from other cells that divide

to make new ones.

Page 3: Cell Structure & Function

Definition of Cell

A cell is the smallest unit that is able to do life tasks.

Examples of Cells

One celled organism

Plant Stem

Red Blood Cell

Nerve Cell

Bacteria

Types of Cells We Will Study

Parts of Cells

• Both cells have organelles in them.• Each organelle has a special job to

do to help the cell function.• We will only be learning about some

of the organelles.

Cell Parts(You saw lots of cell parts, called organelles, in the preceding slides.Don’t worry we will only study the organelles on the following slides.)

Are you ready?

Introducing the Organelles!

Surrounding the Cell

Page 11: Cell Structure & Function

Cell Membrane

• Outer membrane of cell that controls movement of nutrients, water and gases in and out of the cell

Page 12: Cell Structure & Function

Cell Wall

• In plant cells • Supports & protects

the cell

Inside the Cell

Page 14: Cell Structure & Function

Nucleus

• Directs cell activities• Contains genetic material - DNA

Page 15: Cell Structure & Function

Chromosomes

• In nucleus• Made of DNA• Contain instructions

for traits & characteristics

Page 16: Cell Structure & Function

Cytoplasm

• Gel-like mixture• All organelles are in the cytoplasm

Page 17: Cell Structure & Function

Mitochondria

• Produces energy – by chemical reactions that break down fats & carbohydrates

Page 18: Cell Structure & Function

Vacuoles

• Sacs for storage• Contains water • Help plants keep

shape

Page 19: Cell Structure & Function

Chloroplast

• In plant cells• Contains green

chlorophyll• It is where

photosynthesis takes place
