Objective:

To recognize living things and their main features, to value the importance of our bodies.

Learning objective: Identify the importance of the cell and the function of its parts.

Biblical Principle:

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

The Cell • All living things are made up of cells. • Cells are the smallest working units of all living things. • All cells come from preexisting cells through cell

division.

Surrounding the Cell

Page 8: Cell Structure Function (1)

Cell Membrane

• Outer membrane of cell that controls movement in and out of the cell

• Double layer

Page 9: Cell Structure Function (1)

Cell Wall

• Most commonly found in plant cells & bacteria

• Supports & protects cells

Inside the Cell

Page 11: Cell Structure Function (1)

Nucleus • Directs cell activities• Separated from cytoplasm by nuclear membrane• Contains genetic material - DNA

Page 12: Cell Structure Function (1)

Nuclear Membrane

• Surrounds nucleus• Made of two layers• Openings allow material

to enter and leave nucleus

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

Page 13: Cell Structure Function (1)

Chromosomes

• In nucleus• Made of DNA• Contain instructions for

traits & characteristics

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

Page 14: Cell Structure Function (1)

Nucleolus

• Inside nucleus• Contains RNA to build

proteins

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

Page 15: Cell Structure Function (1)

Cytoplasm• Gel-like mixture• Surrounded by cell membrane• Contains hereditary material

Page 16: Cell Structure Function (1)

Endoplasmic Reticulum

• Moves materials around in cell

• Smooth type: lacks ribosomes

• Rough type (pictured): ribosomes embedded in surface

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

Page 17: Cell Structure Function (1)

Ribosomes

• Each cell contains thousands

• Make proteins• Found on ribosomes &

floating throughout the cell

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

Page 18: Cell Structure Function (1)

Mitochondria• Produces energy through

chemical reactions – breaking down fats & carbohydrates

• Controls level of water and other materials in cell

• Recycles and decomposes proteins, fats, and carbohydrates

Golgi Bodies

Process proteins for secretion.

Page 20: Cell Structure Function (1)

Lysosome• Digestive 'plant' for

proteins, fats, and carbohydrates

• Transports undigested material to cell membrane for removal

• Cell breaks down if lysosome explodes

http://library.thinkquest.org/12413/structures.html

Page 21: Cell Structure Function (1)

Vacuoles• Membrane-bound sacs

for storage, digestion, and waste removal

• Contains water solution• Help plants maintain

shape.

Chloroplast

• Usually found in plant cells

• Contains green chlorophyll

• Where photosynthesis takes place

Page 25: Cell Structure Function (1)

Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Systems

• A cell is the smallest unit of living matter; the building blocks of living things.

• Tissues are groups of cells working together to perform a certain job.• Organs are groups of tissues that perform a certain function.• Organs working together to carry out a certain life function are an organ

system.
