Proud Member of
Celebrating our Past-Presidents On March 22 our Past-Presidents were invited to a special luncheon in their honour. President’s Message
April is over and SEESA will have hosted
another successful Rummage Sale. The
amount of work that goes into these sales is
unbelievable and I want to thank the
hundreds of volunteers who help make it a
success. It is like a well-oiled machine. The
call goes out for donations and the wheels are
set in motion. Many volunteers are here for
every rummage sale – they know exactly what
needs to be done, and they do it. As a result,
we have one of the best rummage sales in the
city. I want to say THANK YOU to each and
every one of you. Your efforts are greatly
appreciated and it is this spirit of giving that
makes SEESA such a great place.

Know that you are the perfect age. Each year is special and precious, for you shall only live it once. Be comfortable with growing older Louise Hay
Kim’s Korner Oh gosh—as I write this the Rummage Sale donations are pouring in and the
Cleaners and Sorters are busy as bees. They really do a fantastic job of... well, cleaning and sorting. Thanks to the gang down the hall! “Do you need a hug?” This is a question that we should be asking prior to hugging someone. While many of our members enjoy a good hug, consider that some do not. I reviewed this practice with the staff recently. If someone is standing with
their arms open clearly this is the sign they are open for a hug. But if this clue is not given, consider asking “do you want a hug?” or “can I give you a hug?” and then, of course, respect the answer that is given. The Strathearn Room has been given a mini makeover. The walls are now painted a fresh white and new flooring has been installed. The room looks great. The flooring is a non-slip floor and there are some issues with glides on chairs and movement with
some of the programs. I have ordered adhesive felt for the chairs which should solve the chair issue. I hope you have been enjoying the new home-made treats in the dining room. I have been enjoying the deviled eggs! Thanks to our volunteer, Katlyn, for coming and baking these yummy goodies for us. May is the month that starts to feel like summer! Get out and enjoy the nice weather, and remember we are still here! Classes and clubs are still going
on and the Kitchen will still be open for a good meal. Enjoy the sunshine! Everyone!

SENIORS HOME SUPPORTS PROGRAM
Spring is definitely here. But it is only the
beginning of May and if you’ve lived in Alberta
a while you know we could still get snow. At
least by now, we know it won’t last.
We are now heading into outdoor living
season, pulling out and cleaning patio
furniture, the smell of fresh mowed grass after
a gentle rain, all the fun summer things. Or
you’re off to the lake.
But then there’s the lawn that needs to be cut,
the eavestroughs that need to be cleaned, that
piece of siding that needs
to be repaired, windows
that need to be washed,
the back gate that isn’t
closing properly, cleaning
out the garage and
storing those winter tires!
AHHHH!!! Need I go on?
I got tired just thinking about all the outdoor
projects I have coming up. How about you?
Need help with your yard, garden, and outdoor
projects? Give me a call. I have screened and
vetted businesses (small and large) who can
help with power raking, rototilling, junk
removal, fence repairs, etc. Make your list and
let’s get it done so you can
sit back, relax, and enjoy an
ice cold beverage in the
shade of your neatly
trimmed tree while you
enjoy those long summer
evenings!
And if you still need to finish your Spring
cleaning, are downsizing, or have some home
repairs you’ve been putting off, I also have
people who can help you with that.
Call me, Deborah, at Home Supports
780-468-1985 ext. 260 and I’ll set you up.

Betty has been making quilts since the 80’s and started out making them for her children out of fortrel fabric. She now makes 15 to 20 quilts a year for Ronald McDonald in addition to quilts and microwave holders for SEESA. She describes her hobby as “better than watching TV”. Well done Betty!

Program Notes
Welcome to your
Spring Programming Session!
We have many opportunities at SEESA to stay
healthy, informed, and socialized. We have
60 classes and 37 clubs to choose from on
various days. Take advantage of all we have
to offer by joining an activity that interests or
challenges you.
I want to take this opportunity to say THANK
YOU to our Activity Liaisons! This dedicated
group of volunteers are here every week to
ensure that our members have a scheduled
activity to come to. They are here early to set
up and take attendance, they ensure that
there is enough equipment for the members
to enjoy the game, and they ensure
everything gets put away when the activity is
done. There are times when they have to do
extra planning or organizing which is done
away from SEESA. They don’t get paid and
they don’t get any special perks because of
their involvement. They do what they do to
keep our members active and healthy by of-
fering to organize an activity they want to
keep going at SEESA. Our clubs would not
run without these generous individuals. The
next time you enjoy an activity at SEESA,
think about all your Activity Liaison has done
to keep your activity going and take a mo-
ment to say THANK YOU to your Liaison.
Have a great time in your classes and all the
other activities you choose to do at SEESA. If
you would like to see something new added
please let me know. If you’d like to become a
Liaison of a new activity come and chat with
me.

You will be called in May to confirm your appointment.
Seniors Week: June 2—8, 2019
Another year of medical students experiencing SEESA as part of their geriatric rotation has come to an end. It has been a remarkable eye-opener for some who have not been exposed to what healthy aging looks like. Thank you to our members and instructors who took the time to answer the students’ questions. We look forward to welcoming a new batch of future doctors and nurses in the fall.

From the kitchen. One of the things a few
people mentioned on our
survey was when we
occasionally sell out of the
lunch special. I think that we
have all experienced this at
our favorite restaurants.
It is difficult to predict how many people will
come for lunch on any given day, or if they will
want the special or something lighter. We try to
keep track and work with averages.
Also, since we have a different special each day,
we can’t prepare too much extra, because we
cannot use up leftovers without freezing them
and serving them at a later date. We feel fresh
is better.
Thank you for your understanding.

OUTREACH NEWS Spring has sprung, or at least it is on the way!
With spring, comes a host of activities we have
not done for many months, such as gardening,
spring cleaning, travelling, and more. Each new
activity uses muscles that may not have been
used for a while, resulting in feeling sore and
stiff afterwards. Please remember to warm up
before starting something new, start slowly and
build up the amount of time you work on the
same activity, take rest breaks and stretch
afterward. Listen to your body – it is usually
very good at telling you when you are doing too
much. Take time to enjoy your favourite spring
and summer activities!

Last month was highlighted with volunteer appreciation week. On April 10, we held a cake and coffee for all of our volunteers, whether they have donated 1 hour or several hundred. I was thrilled with the turn out for this event and I had a great time chatting with everyone. I also got to announce the theme for this year: Our Volunteers Keep Us Afloat. All of the staff are hard at work planning the main volunteer appreciation event that will be held in August. In line with the theme, we’re going to be turning our centre into a Yacht Club for the party. If you would like to come, keep scanning in your hours. You neet to enter at least 25 hours to be invited. Watch for more details closer to the event. If you appreciate the volunteers who make our centre run, please consider dropping off a gift certificate from your favourite store or restaurant to be used as a door prize. Thank you to everyone who already has.

BY THE NUMBERS:
In March, 2703.75 hours were scanned in by 211 volunteers. That is 60 people more than February. Thank you for helping keep our statistic accurate by scanning your fob and entering your hours.
COFFEE AND THE VOLUNTEER
In the early part of the day, we have our wonderful kitchen volunteers who keep the coffee going. In the afternoon/evening, our cafeteria runs on an honor basis. When you are here for a volunteer job, you are welcome to have a coffee, tea, or hot chocolate on us. When you are here during your regular club or activity time and not actively volunteering, you should be purchasing your refreshments just like everyone else. It is a small thing to offer but it is a way for us at SEESA to let you know that we appreciate your hard work and the extra things that you do to help SEESA run. If you have any questions regarding this, please come ask for clarification.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURE: KARATE
This monthly I had the pleasure of sitting down with Elaine Radulski & Sue Lindsay, our karate instructors. Elaine and Sue have been practicing and teaching karate for over 35 years each. Elaine was actually one of Sue’s students. They both have their rokudan (6th degree black belt), have competed in and won tournaments at national and international levels, and have awards for being outstanding sensei (teachers). These two wonderful women volunteer their time for everything that they do with karate: holding classes for both children and adults ; arranging and judging tournaments; sitting on a Black Belt Ranking Committee; and choreographing fight
scenes for productions, including the one used in The Big Bad Musical production at SEESA last fall. They do all of this without seeking compensation because they love the sport and want to be able to share it with others. They will be going to Toronto for nationals in November and will be travelling to the international competition in Denmark in 2022. A little closer to home, they are going to be judging the Karate Canada Junior National Championships, held May 3-5 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. This is open to the public if you are curious to see what it’s about. For more information on their programs, check out their website—mcskarate.ca.
Karate is a defensive martial art that does not require great feats of strength. The style of karate that Sue and Elaine teach is called Shito-Ryu Itosu-Kai, a form that has a balance between the use of hands and feet. The karate class at SEESA is under attended and is often pretty close to 1 on 1 instruction.
When asked why seniors should attend this class, Sue and Elaine highlighted features such as improved balance, flexibility, muscle tone, and body awareness. This quick and dynamic martial art can be modified for all fitness levels and can be adjusted to accommodate a multitude of injuries, including joint weaknesses. Movies may have you picturing a class of people standing in lines and shouting in unison but that is the not the reality of these classes. Elaine and Sue run their classes in a manner that is full of laughs and where stumbling steps are welcome. They will go over a movement or
a kata (series of movements) until they make sense and your muscles are starting to remember the steps without you thinking about them. As someone who has attended the class, I would highly recommend it for the physical fitness as well as the fun. -Melanie

A Funny Thing Happened on the Phone Out to
the Birthday Party….
Unfortunately some members were given the
wrong date… we wondered why there were so
many people missing who had RSVP’s to the
party. Luckily Kim was hosting a Coffee with
the Executive
Director so we
turned that into a
small party for the
April babies that
missed the Tuesday
party.
Our apologies for
the error and hope
that it didn’t cause
too much
inconvenience.
