    GIVING MATTERS by Bill Brownson

Thanks to your generosity we ended the first quarter with only a slight operating fund deficit.

With your financial support we were able to hire Jim LeVally as our Children & Youth Coordinator, an investment in a criti-cal mission area.

While unpredictable winter weather can cause people to miss church and make giving uncertain, beautiful summer weather is actually predictable – it’s when we take our vacations and other activities get in the way of church. So that your support can continue even when you can’t make it to services, please consider having your contribution automatically made from your bank account weekly, biweekly, or monthly.

For more information on this giving program, please contact Rebecca Naas, Office Manager, [email protected] or (614) 424-6050, ext. 100. Enrollment forms are also available at the Welcome Desk.

Your support makes all of King Avenue’s ministries possi-ble. Thank you!

    May Special Offerings

Peace with Justice On Sunday, May 31 during all worship services a special offer-ing will be collected for Peace with Justice. This special Sunday enables The United Methodist Church to witness to God's hope for a faithful, loving world. The offering awards grants to organi-zations who advocate for peace and equality. Fifty percent of the offering will stay in the West Ohio Conference and be used for ministries like the Freedom School at Summit and Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Please make checks payable to King Avenue UMC and indicate PEACE in the memo line. Denominational offering envelopes will be supplied.

Huggins Ministry Fund The Huggins Ministry Fund has helped to create, develop and sustain innovative ministries at King Avenue and Stone Village churches. Just a few of these ministries include Music, Children's Education, and LGBT programs. Special offerings will be received on Sunday, April 26 and Sunday, May 3.

YOUTH MINISTRY FUNDRAISER by April Olt

On Sunday, May 3, the youth will pass out M & M mini tubes to the congregation during both services.

This sweet gift will be provided to your family by King Avenue United Methodist Youth as a thank you for supporting the Mission and Ministry of our Youth Programs!

Our goal with this treat is to raise money to support the cost of our summer mission trip and to provide funding for all youth to participate in our events. Our next mission trip is to Cincinnati, OH this summer. The total cost of this trip is $4500.00.

    How can you help?

    1. Eat the sweet treat of mini M&M’s in this container.

    2. With your pocket change from everyone in the house fill the container with quar-ters.

    3. Each time you put a quarter in the tube, or eat some M&M’s, say a prayer for the King Avenue UMC Youth.

    Tithing: Test Me in This

    Sundays, May 3—June 7 at 10am

in the Infant and Parent Room

There is a hunger in every human heart for connection, primitive and raw, to God. To satisfy it, many are beginning to explore traditional spiritual disciplines used for centuries... everything from fixed-hour prayer to fasting to sincere obser-vance of the Sabbath. In Tithing, Douglas LeBlanc, the author, explores the ancient spiritual practice as it is lived by many today. Through their eyes, one can come to understand this ancient practice as God’s call to a life of generosity, compas-sion, and joy.

Rev. John Keeny will lead a weekly dis-cussion of this book Sundays at 10am during the month of May. Maximum class size 12 people. Books will be avail-able at the Welcome Desk starting Sun-day, April 19, for a cost of $12.

    Troublesome Bible Passages

Sundays, through May 31 at 10am

    in the Chapel

Have you ever read a passage in the Bible that is difficult to understand and trou-bling to think about? Sometimes working through those thorny passages stimulates Christian growth. This study tackles some troublesome scriptures and illuminates their meaning for today. Tim Bechtol,

who has taught Disciple and Covenant Bible Studies, will lead the classes based on the book Troublesome Bible Passages by Douglas Wingeier and David Lowes Wat-son.

Each session will treat a separate scrip-ture, so you can attend as you are able.

Meditation: Higher Spirituality and Self Discovery

    Mondays, May 11 – June 29 at 7pm

    in the Fireside Room

Derek Mortland will lead an 8 week jour-ney into greater awareness of the mind and spirit. Derek’s personal travels and experiences over the last 20 years have put him in contact with advanced martial artists, Yogis, Zen teachers, and Energy Healers. For the past 17 years Derek has used techniques shared with him by these great teachers to bring peace, compassion, understanding, faith, and love to his own life. He wishes to pass on the teachings and practices he has been blessed with to others.

Meditation is a tool to gain a greater sense of calmness, control, and peace in life. We will explore the relevancy of medita-tion to the Christian faith, and see where other faiths overlap and share common ground.

    Continued on page 7.

  • PAGE 7 CARILLON

“Faith Formation” continued from page 6.

We will delve into the deeper meaning of Biblical passages and experience the light these verses shine relative to meditation and inner spiritual practices.

Light physical exercises will be a part of the practices, so loose fitting comfortable clothing is encouraged. Those with high blood pressure, heart problems, kidney disease, or glaucoma may need to consult their medical professional as some forms of meditation and exercise may exacerbate these conditions. All are encouraged to join and bring a spirit of joy and discov-ery.

Week 1 – Introductions and Expectations

Week 2 – OM, Amen, and The Divine Creative Sound

    Week 3 – Are we a body with a soul or a

    soul with a body?

Week 4 – Demons be cast out

Week 5 – Garden of Eden, Tree of Life, and Lord’s Prayer

Week 6 – Jesus and Kabbalah

    Week 7 – I am that I am
