Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Formats and publishing of warnings
• Default format (text, ia5)
• Non standardised xml formats
Publishing and distribution of public warnings
• Webbased applications like (DWD or Meteoalarm frontends)
• Customised distribution via fax, email, ftp, sms and other
• Published via DWD ftp server
Problems:
• Text format (“unsuitable” input format for applications)
• Different customised (“hand-made”) xml formats
Formats and publishing of public warnings
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
DWD standard format of xml-based warnings (reduction of customised formats)
Standard input format of warning applications (next generation)
CAP – a powerful data format of warnings
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
First draft implementation for public warnings
Access to draft CAP output via DWD ftp-server:
For details, please contact:
Operational Summer 2011:
• 1. step: CAP only as an addionally output format for public warnings
• nexts steps: CAP as standard format of warnings and other warning products
Using CAP schema for data exchange between different systems (DWD internally)
Status of implementation and route map
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
CAP only as an addional format
Official Start: June 2011
• Using only a subset of CAP possibilities
• Well-defined classes of warning
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Using the full functionality of CAP
New products like:
• Warning with detailed geo references
• Warning status for different areas
• …
Next generation:
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Powerful xsd schema (Version 1.1, draft version 1.2)
But some problems:
- Critical points:
- meteorological parameters (<parameter>-tag)
- Altitude and ceiling values (<altitude>-, <ceiling>-tag) compliant to German / European law
- Nice to have:
- Message ID (<identifier>-tag): ID managed by WMO repository AND orginator
- Authority ID (<sender>-tag): ID managed by WMO repository email
Open Issues
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Description of meteorological parameters (1)
Problem:Using the <parameter>-tag as“machine-readable” element formeteorological parameters:
• Combination of value and unit,
• Ranges of values (e.g. between 10 and 20; > 20 or < 20)
DWD / Meteoalarm (first workaround)
draft Version 1.2 (workaround)
first idea
!
Workaround:
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Description of meteorological parameters (2)
Proposal b)Proposal a)
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Altitude / ceiling – compliant to German low
CAP version 1.1 CAP draft version 1.2
Proposal (unit as optional attribute)
with optional attribute (“meter”)
without optional attribute (“feet”)
Deutscher Wetterdienst – 20 April 2023
Publishing public warning (only as addionally format) via DWD ftp server (for details see: http://www.dwd.de: “Special Users, Basic information supply”): June 2011
Designing a “DWD” profile
Development of CAP based applications like “apps” or “visualisers”
