Ice Boy By David Ezra Stein Picture Book Ages 3-7 (Preschool-Grade 2) HC: 978-0-7636-8203-3 Pub Date: April 2017

An ice cube in search of adventure stars in a

comical (and very cool) tale of transformation

from Caldecott Honoree David Ezra Stein.

Ice Boy has a normal life. He likes goofing around with his siblings (“Don’t lick your brother!”). He listens when his parents tell him that being chosen to cool someone’s drink or be a cold compress is the best thing that can happen to an ice cube. But Ice Boy wants more. So even though his parents tell him never to go outside, and even though his doctor tells him never to go in the sun, Ice Boy decides to head for the beach, where he rolls right into the water (“Best day ever!”). But suddenly his edges begin to blur. . . . From the creator of the best-selling Interrupting Chicken comes an offbeat and funny story of daring to venture into the unknown, whatever form it may take.

Green Pants By Kenneth Kraegel Picture Book Ages 3-7 (Preschool-Grade 2) HC: 978-0-7636-8840-0 Pub Date: March 2017

~ EDITORIAL NOTES ~

Green Pants is the story of the ridiculously endearing Jameson, who will only wear pants of one color. And that color is GREEN. When anyone tries to get him to wear pants of a different color, he finds creative ways to dispose of those lesser pants. And this creative thinking will come in handy later, when Jameson is faced with a seemingly impossible dilemma: forgo his green pants and wear tuxedo pants to be in his cousin’s wedding, or stay true to himself and give up the honor of being in the wedding party. Not only is this a great story on its surface, but Jameson’s struggle to navigate the expectations of others, of society, can resonate with kids struggling to give up their own comfort objects, kids who might have a harder time than others following the rules or fitting in. It’s a celebration of being different, but it’s also a celebration of coming up with creative ways to do what needs to be done while still being true to yourself.

Jabari Jumps By Gaia Cornwall Picture Book Ages 4-8 (Preschool -Grade 3) HC: 978-0-7636-7838-8 Pub Date: May 2017

Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He’s finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he’s a great jumper, so he’s not scared at all. “Looks easy,” says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can’t help but root for. Gaia Cornwall is an illustrator who loves making patterns for surface design. Her work can be seen in magazines, in logos, on various products, and even in movies. Jabari Jumps is her first picture book. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island.

Working up the courage to take a big, important leap is hard,

but Jabari is almost absolutely ready to

make a giant splash.

Hattie & Hudson By Chris Van Dusen Picture Book Ages 4-8 (Preschool-Grade 3) HC: 978-0-7636-6545-6 Pub Date: May 2017

~ EDITORIAL NOTES ~

Nobody does exaggeration better than Chris Van Dusen--and I‘m not exaggerating when I say that!

Working with Chris is always a pleasure, and always interesting. This time round was particularly so. The text for this title began in verse similar to King Hugo’s Huge Ego and The Circus Ship. But at some point it became clear that this was not the way forward for this story. Trying to tell the story of the friendship between these characters just didn’t lend itself to the confines of a rhyme scheme. When I think about it now, see that Hudson was just too big, too absolutely MASSIVE, really—too exaggerated, if you will—to fit into a format. He barely fits between the covers of this book! Chris reverted to prose, and suddenly Hudson (and Hattie) had the room they needed to stretch and expand and, well, you can see the result here…

Triangle By Mac Barnett Illustrated by Jon Klassen Picture Book Ages 5-9 (Kindergarten-Grade 4) HC: 978-0-7636-9603-0 Pub Date: March 2017 *First of the series

~ EDITORIAL NOTES ~

Meet Triangle! He lives in a triangular house, with a triangular door, and one day gets the idea he’d like to play a trick on his friend Square.

So off he goes, to Square’s house. Square lives in a square house with a square door, and he is—guess what?—afraid of snakes! So Triangle walks up to Square’s door and says—HISS! Just like a snake.

Square rallies and chases Triangle right up to Triangle’s front door, where BOOM! he’s too big to fit through that triangle-shaped door! Drats! But he’s blocking all the light from Triangle’s home. And Triangle is afraid of the dark, so now who has played a trick on whom?

Multi-award-winning, New York Times best-selling duo Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen conspire again on a slyly funny tale about some very sneaky shapes.

Fergus and Zeke By Kate Messner Illustrated by Heather Ross Early Reader Age 5-8 (Kindergarten-Grade 3) HC: 978-0-7636-7846-3 Pub Date: June 2017

~ EDITORIAL NOTES ~

Meet Fergus and Zeke—a lovable classroom mouse and his streetwise buddy—in a brand-new series perfect for early readers. Like Fergus, kids love the rituals and routines—and yes, the rules!—of school. The series is perfect for kids who are just starting kindergarten or first grade, who will recognize so many of the classroom situations.

In this first book, readers will get a mouse-eye-view of the Natural History Museum as the kids in class go on a fun field trip! Fergus and Zeke are so delightfully childlike, with a terrific sense of fun. I especially love the way they fluff up their fur to look like manes and roar like lions!

Kate Messner is a children’s literature treasure. We are so thrilled to have her on our list. Fans of her numerous picture books, as well as the chapter book series Marty McGuire and Ranger in Time, will be delighted to meet Fergus and Zeke!

Princess Cora and the Crocodile By Laura Amy Schlitz Illustrated by Brian Floca Early Reader Ages 4-8 (Preschool-Grade 3) HC: 978-0-7636-4822-0 Pub Date: March 2017

Princess Cora is being groomed to be Queen, and she endures a daily regimen of study, exercise, and baths. She is miserable. So she writes to her fairy godmother and asks for a pet, hoping for a dog—but a crocodile arrives instead. A crocodile who likes to bite people.

This is an original, hilarious, and emotionally satisfying fairy story that is unequivocally on the side of the child. It is a gorgeous book with unique trim, foil highlights on the jacket, carefully thought-out self-cover and endpapers, and a lovely, classic interior design, with lots and lots of color pictures.

On writing this book, Laura Amy Schlitz says, “The title, Princess Cora and the Crocodile, was chosen for melody rather than accuracy. The real story is not just about Princess Cora and the crocodile, but about a crocodile, Princess Cora and her PARENTS. Children want to please their parents, but perpetual submission doesn't allow them to grow into themselves. In Princess Cora’s case, it’s up to the crocodile to cut the Gordian knot.”

Over the course of 16 years, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova faced each other over tennis nets around the world 80 times. From 1975 through 1986, they not only dominated women's tennis, they pretty much were tennis. Now, rivalries in sports are not hard to find, but this rivalry is different because these two women were good friends. This book is truly a celebration of women in sports, of fierce competition, and of lasting friendships.

Poe: Stories and Poems By Gareth Hinds Graphic Novel Age 12 and up (Grade 7 and up) HC: 978-0-7636-8112-8 PB: 978-0-7636-9509-5 Pub Date: August 2017

In “The Cask of Amontillado,” a man exacts revenge on a disloyal friend at carnival, luring him into catacombs below the city. In “The Masque of the Red Death,” a prince shielding himself from plague hosts a doomed party inside his abbey stronghold. A prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition, faced with a swinging blade and swarming rats, can’t see his tormentors in “The Pit and the Pendulum,” and in “The Tell-Tale Heart,” a milky eye and a deafening heartbeat reveal the effects of conscience and creeping madness. Alongside these tales are visual interpretations of three poems — “The Raven,” “The Bells,” and Poe’s poignant elegy to lost love, “Annabel Lee.” The seven concise graphic narratives, keyed to thematic icons, amplify and honor the timeless legacy of a master of gothic horror.

In a thrilling adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s best-known

works, acclaimed artist-adapter Gareth Hinds

translates Poe's dark genius into graphic-novel format.

It is true that I am nervous. But why will you say that I am mad?

The Whydah A Pirate Ship Feared, Wrecked, and Found By Martin Sandler Non-fiction Ages 10 and up (Grades 5 and up) HC: 978-0-7636-8101-2 Pub Date: August 2017

~ EDITORIAL NOTES ~

This is the exciting true story of the captaincy, wreck, and discovery of the Whydah—the only pirate ship ever found.

Young readers will delight in discovering the secret lives of pirates aboard the Whydah. They’ll learn that a pirate ship was run as a democracy. Everything was voted on, including what ships to plunder and who should be taken captive. They had workman’s compensation rules where “every man who shall become a cripple or lose a limb in his service shall have 800 pieces of eight from common stock and for lesser hurts proportionately”—as stated in the Articles of Agreement. The booty was shared equitably depending on rank—race and age didn’t matter. They ate with forks, knives, and spoons off of pewter plates and wore the latest fashions, no doubt taken from wealthy passengers aboard the ships they looted. It is a true story of sea adventure like no other sure to appeal to pirate fans of all ages.

A Boston Story Coming this Fall!

Trell By Dick Lehr Young Adult Ages 12 and up (Grades 7 and up) HC: 978-0-7636-9275-9 Pub Date: September 2017

On a hot summer night in the late 1980s, in the Boston neighborhood of

Roxbury, a twelve-year-old African-American girl was sitting on a

mailbox talking with her friends when she became the innocent victim

of gang-related gunfire. Amid public outcry, an immediate manhunt was

on to catch the murderer, and a young African-American man was

quickly apprehended, charged, and — wrongly — convicted of the

crime.

Dick Lehr, a former reporter for the Boston Globe’s famous Spotlight

Team who investigated this case for the newspaper, now turns the story

into Trell, a page-turning novel about the daughter of an imprisoned

man who persuades a reporter and a lawyer to help her prove her

father’s innocence. What pieces of evidence might have been

overlooked? Can they manage to get to the truth before a dangerous

character from the neighborhood gets to them?

From the co-author of Black Mass comes a gripping YA novel inspired by the true story of a young man's false imprisonment for murder — and those who fought to free him.

farmyard friends come to the rescue.
