Green Pants is the story of the ridiculously endearing Jameson, who will only wear pants of one color. And that color is GREEN. When anyone tries to get him to wear pants of a different color, he finds creative ways to dispose of those lesser pants. And this creative thinking will come in handy later, when Jameson is faced with a seemingly impossible dilemma: forgo his green pants and wear tuxedo pants to be in his cousin’s wedding, or stay true to himself and give up the honor of being in the wedding party. Not only is this a great story on its surface, but Jameson’s struggle to navigate the expectations of others, of society, can resonate with kids struggling to give up their own comfort objects, kids who might have a harder time than others following the rules or fitting in. It’s a celebration of being different, but it’s also a celebration of coming up with creative ways to do what needs to be done while still being true to yourself.

Jabari Jumps By Gaia Cornwall Picture Book Ages 4-8 (Preschool -Grade 3) HC: 978-0-7636-7838-8 Pub Date: May 2017

Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He’s finished his swimming lessons and passed his swim test, and he’s a great jumper, so he’s not scared at all. “Looks easy,” says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board. In a sweetly appealing tale of overcoming your fears, newcomer Gaia Cornwall captures a moment between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can’t help but root for. Gaia Cornwall is an illustrator who loves making patterns for surface design. Her work can be seen in magazines, in logos, on various products, and even in movies. Jabari Jumps is her first picture book. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island.

Nobody does exaggeration better than Chris Van Dusen--and I‘m not exaggerating when I say that!

Working with Chris is always a pleasure, and always interesting. This time round was particularly so. The text for this title began in verse similar to King Hugo’s Huge Ego and The Circus Ship. But at some point it became clear that this was not the way forward for this story. Trying to tell the story of the friendship between these characters just didn’t lend itself to the confines of a rhyme scheme. When I think about it now, see that Hudson was just too big, too absolutely MASSIVE, really—too exaggerated, if you will—to fit into a format. He barely fits between the covers of this book! Chris reverted to prose, and suddenly Hudson (and Hattie) had the room they needed to stretch and expand and, well, you can see the result here…
