Notes to the Conductor
Unison sections, contrary motion, and a strong rhythmic drive combine to make this exciting piece a sure winner. In this exciting work for young string orchestra, many of the phrases and thematic material begin on a unison note and then one voice moves away from, and then back toward that note. The other voice either remains static on the original note or proceeds in contrary motion from the first voice, creating chords that expand and contract almost continuously beneath the melody. The piece is also characterized by a strong rhythmic drive and care should be taken by the director not to let the tempo slow throughout.
