Did You Know That ? The AnimalsFormed in Newcastle upon Tyne during 1962 and 1963 when Lead singer Eric Burdon joined the Alan Price Rhythm and Blues Combo, the original line up was Eric Burdon (vocals) Alan Price (organ & keyboard) Hilton Valentine (guitar) John Steel(drums) and Chas Chandler (bass). They changed their name to the Animals because of their wild stage act and moved to London in 1964 in time to be grouped with the British Invasion. Signed to EMI, s Columbia label, a rocking version of the standard “Baby Let Me Follow You Down” retitled “Baby Let Me Take You Home” was their first single. In June 1964 they had a transatlantic hit with “House of the Rising Sun” which later became a sore point with the group because Alan Price was credited with the writing and arrangement of the song. The Animals two year chart career, produced by Mickie Most, featured intense ,gritty pop music covers such as “Bring it on Home to me”, “Don't let me be Misunderstood” and “I'm Crying” By May 1965 the group was starting to feel internal pressures. Alan Price left due to personal and musical differences as well as the fear of flying on tour; he went on to a successful career as a solo artist with the Alan Price Set. Dave Rowberry took his place and the Animals had further hits with “We gotta get out of this Place” and “It's my Life” In 1966 the band had one more big hit “Don't bring me down” John Steel decided to leave the band and by September of that year the Animals disbanded due to the groups business affairs being a total shambles, Chas Chandler went on to manage Jimi Hendrix with huge success. Eric Burdon put a band together, Eric Burdon and the New Animals and had two more hits with “San Franciscan Nights” and “Sky Pilot” worldwide but were never to be as big as the original Animals. In all 32 members were to join and leave the Animals over the decades one being Andy Summers who later joined Sting to form the band Police. The original Animals got together 3 more times, one to do a benefit concert in 1968 and then again in 1975-77 and the last time to record an album in 1983 Eric Burdon in 2008 tried to claim that he had the rights to the “Animals” band name but it was decided by the courts that John Steel (the original drummer) was the rightful owner to the name, Eric Burdon went on to have a solo career with minor Album hits in the UK and the USA. In 1992 John Steel and former member Hilton Valentine formed a group called the Valentine Animals later to be called Animals II and finally Animals and Friends, Valentine left the group in 2001 and the group still tours to this day with John Steel the original drummer of the Animals. Ever wonder who the Egg man was in The Beatles Song “I am the Walrus” well it was Eric Burdon who after telling John Lennon a story about a sexual encounter he had with a certain young lady who liked raw eggs breaking on her while they made love, Lennon nicknamed him The Egg man.
