Slide 3
Build It Up, and Break It Down! What is an Engineer? An
engineer creates things using Math, Science, or Technology. What is
Technology? Technology is anything thats made to make your life
easier!
Slide 4
Build It Up, and Break It Down! Can you name things that make
your life easier?
Slide 5
Build It Up, and Break It Down! What are some types of
Engineers? Electrical Engineer Computer Engineer Mechanical
Engineer Civil Engineer Chemical Engineer
Slide 6

Civil engineering is building, designing and maintaining structures
in the public domain.

Slide 9
Build It Up, and Break It Down! Youre going to be civil
engineers for the day! Instead of steel and concrete youll be using
toothpicks and gumdrops!
Slide 10
Build It Up, and Break It Down! Structure Requirements Our
Gumdrop Forts must be between 10 12 tall and our foundations must
fit within the confines of a paper plate Hint:
Slide 11
Build It Up, and Break It Down! Did you say fort?! Were
building up our forts and then well be breaking down our opponents
forts with a projectile! Well be slinging gumdrops at our opponents
structures via our home made catapults to see whos designs are the
strongest!
Slide 12
Build It Up, and Break It Down! Heres how well be constructing
our catapults! Step 1

Slide 17
Build It Up, and Break It Down! Well be working in teams of
two! Find a partner and get to work! Each group will create one
fort and one catapult! When time is up the groups will partner up
with another group and compete (by firing gumdrops) to see whos
fort design is the strongest!
