BUDGET CUTTING PRESENTATION EDAD 5400 Sara Schochler and Sam Jackson
82% OF THE BUDGET IS PAYROLL (TROUDT 2015)
• Regarding the hiring of fewer para-professionals or support-staff personal; “It’s difficult through empirical research to determine what contribution aides make to elevate student achievement” (Guthrie, 2012).
• “Redefining the roles of classroom teachers and other staff
members provides great opportunities for increased productivity” (Petrelli, 2015).
• In Grapevine-Colleyville ISD, “The district also has consolidated some services, which means more hours but barely any more overtime pay for many employees” (Edwards, 2013).
3. CAMPUS SECURITY
CAMPUS BUILDING OPERATIONS CUTS
CAMPUS MATERIALS
• “Cloud computing was the answer. I decided to create an e-classroom in which all notes and worksheets were uploaded to a free website, allowing students to access the documents whenever they wanted” (Damani, 2012).
CAMPUS CLIMATE CONTROL
MEDIA AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
9. The Additional Consideration document reveals the possibility of saving the district $7,235 by not implementing Media Services (print) into the budget (Veitenheimer 2010).
10. District level cuts in Media Services promote campus level cuts in Professional Development which can now be done via Webinars and other electronic forums; the amount a campus could cut depends on the individual campus and year in question (Troudt 2015).
One Final Thought
• “Solving our budget crisis shouldn’t come at the expense of children. We should do everything we can to protect students’ learning opportunities, improve the
effectiveness and productivity of their schools” (Petrelli, 2015).
