BPL Introduction

CNP is installing a Broadband over Power Line (BPL) communications infrastructure to facilitate distribution system automation. The BPL equipment injects/receives a high frequency (3-30 Mhz) data signal into/from one phase of an existing distribution ckt. There is an injector unit at or near the substation that is connected to a high speed data communication path fiber/ethernet). Then there are repeaters installed along the circuit to amplify and re-broadcast the signal. The BPL equipment will be connected to utility devices to provide a communication path.

BPL Introduction

For 2006, 41 12kV ckts are scheduled to have BPL equipment installed.

IBM has been hired as the BPL system integrator, and they will be doing the BPL design. The design consists of determining how many devices will be required per ckt and approximately where the devices should be located.
