BOXER BRIEFS2015/16 ISSUE NO. 9
NOVEMBER 2015 VAIL ACADEMY & HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Parents,
Test scores are now public knowledge!!!! Last April we tested students in English/Language Arts grades 3-11, and in Math grades 3-Algebra II. We didn’t get results until Fall Break, approximately 5 months after they were administered, and we were told to keep the results under wraps until today. We have sent you individual scores if your child tested here last year, and I have previously written to you advising that there would likely be an ‘implementation dip’ with the new tests. We also forwarded you letters from Debbie Hedgepeth, our Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Assessment, stating that the gap between Vail and the state average actually increased.
Here is the percentage of students who passed the test.Subject AZ VSD VAHS3rd ELA 40 54 593rd Math 41 70 814th ELA 41 58 824th Math 41 69 745th ELA 32 48 575th Math 39 69 686th ELA 36 51 586th Math 32 57 607th ELA 33 50 607th Math 30 48 568th ELA 31 52 398th Math 33 56 699th ELA 23 43 56Algebra 32 60 8210th ELA 32 45 49Geometry 30 48 5411th ELA 30 41 66Algebra II 30 38 45
In short, we have done well in comparison to others around the district and the state, BUT we have room to grow. Notice the passing rate for the state is never above 41 and we are under that only once in 18 times. Generally math scores at each grade are a little higher than ELA scores, which are to be expected since we implemented our new math curriculum two years ago, and our ELS standards were only started last year.
The state will not be ranking school districts this year as they have in the past. If they did, I am confident that we would again be near the top, and VAHS scoring near the top of the district. I am very proud of our teachers and students for their efforts.
Respectfully,
Dennis J. Barger879-1904

Dear parents:Our students at VAHS will be collecting new socks and underwear for the Women and Children’s Center as a part of a service program for the holidays. The Women’s Center is located on Miracle Mile and provides shelter, food, and hope for hundreds of Tucson’s needy women and their children. You can visit www.grmtucson.com/ to see the center and get more information.
Since there are no men in this center, the donations need to be for boys, girls, and women only. There is a year round need for these items so what we provide will help out for many months to come. We will be collecting the items from Nov 9-Dec 14th. The items will be delivered to the center before Christmas.
Please help us to make this service project a success. As we meet the needs of many families, we are also teaching our children a valuable lesson in generosity and giving. We provide socks and underwear, and the center provides hope for needy families.
Donation boxes will be in each of the elementary classrooms and a box will be in the front office for 6th-12th grade.
Thank you for all your help!
