DARE to CARE Last week we challenged our students to “Dare to Care” as
part of mental Health Week 2016. Our aim was to instill in
our students the importance of caring for oneself and
others. There were various activities happening
throughout the week. Each class looked at the wordless
picture book, “South” and participated in an activity to do
with the book. The Preps made the main character, a bird,
Year 1 and 3 added words to make their own books. The
children were very excited to participate in Try for 5, eating
five vegetables every day for a week- lots of happy
households too we are told! Ahead of camp this week Year 3
and 4 went on a mini Trek which involved Connecting and
Engaging with each other and the environment. We all
finished the week with a relaxing Yoga session with Mrs P-R
which highlighted the importance of caring for our mind and
body. Well done Bostock House on a fabulous week of
CARING! You all did a brilliant job.

The 2016 House Athletics Carnival commenced amidst an
electric atmosphere! The House Chants were sung with
gusto and hurdles created great excitement and cheering
amongst the houses! A shower of rain momentarily paused
the proceedings, but once this passed we were back up and
running. The grey clouds in the distance looked ominous,
but we persevered! As they got closer it became apparent
that we were in for a downpour! We got half way through
the sprinting races before we had to call the carnival to a
halt. The rubberised ‘all-weather’ track became slippery
and dotted with puddles. I was unfortunately not able to
recreate the sunshine that we had at the Whole-School
Sport Day last term which was disappointing!
Congratulations to School House who were in the lead after
the events that we managed to run. Many thanks to all the
staff who braved the elements and enthusiastically
performed their duties amidst very trying conditions!

ALL HAPPENING
Bostock kids are very busy and motivated individuals and I am constantly amazed at how much they do and
experience in any given week. They work hard in the traditional subject areas in the classrooms and that
experience is more engaging and interesting than it has ever been. Our class teachers are very passionate
about what they do, as are our specialist teachers. The children pick up on this and it is infectious in that
they take that passion for learning on board. The array of specialist subjects is something that most primary age children are
not exposed to and makes for a very rich programme. Along with the special things that go on each and every day there are also
other regular special events. We have just had Dare to Care Week, and this week will feature the Year Three and Four camp and
the Prep and Year One swimming programme. Bostock House is certainly a very active and enjoyable place to be for young and
older learners and there is much to come in the remainder of 2016.
THANKYOU
A special thank you to Teddie Sherwin who this morning handed me a copy of a book entitled The Selwood Boys by Tony Wilson.
The signed book is about the footballing brothers and will be placed in the library for all to borrow. I might sneak a little read
first.
DARE TO CARE
Last week was Dare to Care Week at Geelong Grammar School. Yvette Timmins, the mother of Holly in Year Three is certainly
taking on the message and ethos of Dare to Care. She is travelling to Uganda at her own cost to support and work for The
Hunger Project Australia. They are an organisation who aid in the solution of world hunger by facilitating positive and
sustainable change within impoverished communities in Africa, India & South America. One way of supporting the people is by
micro financing the women in particular, to set up businesses. Yvette’s role will be to meet the people and share experiences
with them and to learn from one another. She has committed to fundraising in order to support those she will be helping in
Uganda. If you would like to support what is obviously a wonderful project that can make a difference to the lives of others
please contact Yvette. Yvette has kindly offered to make a presentation to the school upon her return. We wish her luck on
her journey and congratulate her for daring to care.
The smell of freshly mown grass is one of the sure harbingers of Spring and of an increasingly warming sun.
Sadly there has not been much of it as yet at Biddlecombe-by-the Sea. The incessant rain and saturated
ground have prevented the mower from performing its necessary duties. Consequently, when Matt, the
hired gardener, set out on his rider mower last Friday most of the garden looked more like a cropping
paddock than a lawn.
But mown it now is and this achievement was marked by the purchase of a new BBQ on Sunday (of the
German composer kind) to ensure a committed outdoor lifestyle in the coming months. Pity though about the mosquitoes who
find in the Corio campus perfect breeding conditions and, it seems, one particular house a heaven on earth.
Despite the necessary inconvenience of gallons of repellent all this gives rise to a strong feeling of thankfulness. The rhythm of
the seasons. The busting forth of flowers and fruit. The busy and welcome activity of the bees. The presence of so many birds
even if they do call from early in the morning. The luxury of home grown produce: above all, tomatoes that taste like tomatoes.
The laughter and joy of grandchildren as they welcome the chance of unconfined play.
On Sunday Rev Eleanor referred to the German mystic of the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, Meister Eckhart,
who suggested that, if words of prayer were found difficult to compose, saying “Thank you” would be prayer-enough. Wise
words, wise counsel. Even in a world where there is much unhappiness, simple thanks can make a difference. If we can say
thank you perhaps we will be led in assisting others to do the same.
