REST IN THE LORD

For several weeks we have listened to readings that have recounted just how arduous the work of prophets and disciples can be. In today’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus listens to the reports of those he had sent out “two by two” to minister to the people. After the apostles reported what they had done, Jesus, recog-nizing their fatigue, says, “Come away by yourselves to a de-serted place and rest awhile” (Mark 6:31). Perhaps this is what the Lord is telling his disciples in the year 2018 as well. We need to pause on our journey of discipleship and simply rest in the Lord. Sunday Mass provides many opportunities for quiet times, particularly during the periods of silence following the readings. Why not take the time today to allow the saving word of the Lord to penetrate your heart during those silent times? Ask the Lord to renew you in body, mind, and spirit for the ardu-ous work of discipleship. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

DESCANSA EN EL SEÑOR Durante varias semanas hemos escuchado lecturas que relatan la difícil tarea de los profetas y discí-pulos. En el Evangelio de hoy, el Señor Jesús escucha lo que le cuentan los discípulos enviados “de dos en dos” a servir a la gente. Jesús, comprendiendo que están fatigados, les dice: “Vengan conmigo a un lugar solitario, para que descansen un po-co” (Marcos 6:31). Quizás esto también es lo que el Señor les dice a sus discípulos del año 2018. Debemos hacer un alto en nuestro camino de discípulos y simplemente descansar en el Señor. La Misa del domingo brinda muchas oportunidades para la reflexión, en especial durante los períodos de silencio luego de las lecturas. ¿Por qué no dedicar algo de tiempo hoy a per-mitir que la palabra salvadora del Señor penetre tu corazón en esos silencios? Today, 11-15. . .to be continued as space permits. 11. Please be quiet while in church. Once you enter the sanctu-

ary – it is not the time or place to visit with those around you. If you must talk do so as quietly and briefly as possible. Re-member that your conversation might be disturbing someone who is in prayer, which is much more im-portant. Sssshhhhhhhh!

12. Take loud children to the back or crying room. Every par-ent knows that sometimes the baby is going to have a bad day. Don’t make everyone else’s day bad as well. Sit on the end of a pew, if you can, and take the child to the back quick-ly. Don’t wait too long before you make a move. There is no reason to be embarrassed about having to quiet your child in the back of the church. It is worse to allow them to disturb Mass continually.

13. Prepare your offering before Mass. Christ tells us not to let your left hand know what your right hand is doing when you make your offering. Keeping the basket while you get your wallet out can sometimes become quite a scene.

14. No bulletin reading during Mass. Imagine if you invited a guest to your house and before dinner (or during) they decid-ed to read a magazine instead of talking to you. That is what is happening in God’s house when you read the bulletin.

15. Respect Boundaries others may have. You might want to hold hands to pray, they may not. They might be sick and not want to shake during the sign of peace. These are all OK. Do not make any unnecessary judgment because they wor-ship differently.

It was in the home of Joachim and Ann where the Virgin Mary received her training to be the Mother of God. Thus, devotion to Ann and Joachim is an extension of the affection Christians have always professed toward our Blessed Mother. We, too, owe a debt of gratitude to our parents for their help in our Christian formation.

PRAYER:

O Lord, God of our Fathers, who bestowed on Saints Joachim and Anne this grace,

that of them should be born the Mother of your incarnate Son, grant, through the prayers of both,

that we may attain the salvation you have promised to your people.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
