RISING STARRISING STARMr. Kavonte’ Duckett was born on January 28, 1994 in Frederick, MD. He is the son of Lynne Duckett and Charles Thomas; and Chastidy Thomas. He has two brothers Kordarus and Kwaveon and two sisters Chastyn and Chandler. Kavonte’ is a senior at Tuscarora High School and is involved in many clubs and other activities. He is President of the Necktie Club, Ambassadors Club, and Committee Member of the Multicultural Assembly.
Kavonte’ is not only involved in his school but he is also involved in his church and community. Kavonte’s most recent accomplishment is the selection of Tuscarora’s Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award.
Kavonte’ is a lifelong member of St James AME Church, where he serves as the Armor Bearer for the Pastor, sings in the choir, YPD Secretary, junior Usher, Trustee, & Steward. Kavonte’ had the privilege to introduce Bishop Adam J. Richardson on The Sons of Allen Men’s Night at the 60th Session of the Washington Annual Conference. On Saturday, April 02, 2011 he was elected president of the Washington Annual Conference Branch Young People’s and Children’s Division.
Kavonte’ is employed by Gary L. Rollins Funeral Home. He plans to attend Frederick Community College or Hood College and later transfer to the Community College of
Baltimore County (CCBC at Catonsville), where he plans to receive an Associate of Arts degree in Mortuary Science.

UNSUNG HEROUNSUNG HEROMrs. Shirley Moore Grier, a native of Roxboro, North Carolina, is the oldest of nine children born to Mattie Moore and the late James Moore.
Shirley received a diploma in Business and Secretarial Science from Orange County in Middletown, New York. While living in
and was a payroll clerk for her uncle’s cleaning business. After relocating to Frederick, MD in 1972, she attended Frederick Community College where she received a Registered Nursing

Since retirement, Shirley has been very busy with community and volunteer work. Shirley volunteers for health fairs with providing health screenings and education. When not volunteering, she attends workshops, seminars and continuing education classes. She also has been a classroom volunteer for Frederick County Public Schools for more than 20 years.
A member of First Missionary Baptist Church, Shirley serves as the church Parish Nurse with duties encompass-ing emergency care, patient education, health screenings, referrals, nursing home visits and family support. She also takes elderly and ill patients to appointments, runs errands, prepares meals and helps in any way she can. She is a member of the church’s Pastor’s Aid, Board of Christian Education and the History Committee.
Shirley Grier has been a Member of Frederick Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club since 1982. She received Sojourner Truth Award in 2009, Women of Excellence Award in 2008 from the Chi Theta Omega Chap-ter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, and is a member of the Madam CJ Walter Temple #509 IBPOE. She is very active with the Roxboro Scholarship Fund for her High School in North Carolina, where she has helped raise more than %150,000 in the past 20 years.
Married to her husband Ralph for 39 years, Shirley is a mother of two daughters, Marie and Pam and has four grandsons and three great grandsons as well as a Goddaughter Kerron Moore.
Shirley’s motto is “If I can help somebody, then my living will not be in vain.”

ICON AWARDICON AWARDMr. Bernard Brown was born in Fred-erick County, MD, to Newton and Anna Brown. He attended elementary school in Hopehill, MD. A graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1946, he spent four years in the U.S. Armey,
the Command and General Sta� School for Non Commission O�cers while in Seoul, Korea. He received many awards while in Korea, including the Combat Infantry Badge. He received his honorable discharge in 1953 with the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.
Mr. Brown was employed by the Frederick Construction Com-pany from 1955 to 1971, in the building trades. The company, owned by the late Albert Cohen, was one of the largest in Mary-land. Mr. Cohen, who promoted him to Supervisor of Concrete
Operations, quickly noticed Mr. Brown’s leadership qualities. An injury forced him to change jobs and he worked for two years for the U.S. Postal Service as a Clerk/Carrier.
He returned to school to further his education, taking courses at Frederick Community College, Hagerstown Community College, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore and College Park campuses. He received his
Brunswick High teaching Industrial Arts and Building Trades. He transferred to West Frederick and New Market Middle Schools, teaching Technology Education and retiring in 1990. While at Brunswick, he coached the Girls Varsity Basketball Team for eight years and the Boys Baseball Team for three years (winning the Monocacy Valley Athletic League Championship in 1977). While at West Frederick, he joined the coaching sta� at Freder-ick High School, leading the 9th grade basketball team.
As a concerned citizen, he has been and is still involved in many community activities. He served on the
End Coalition for Frederick City, the Community Action Agency, and the Babe Ruth League. He was also Assis-tant Manager of the 13 to 15 year old 1976 State Championship Team.
Mr. Brown is currently the Exalted Ruler of the Mountain City Loge of Elks #382, serving in his 46th year. He is Chairman of the Frederick City Housing Commission, a member of the Laboring Sons Restoration Committee, and President of the Fairview Cemetery.
He was married to Ruth B. Brown, his high school sweetheart, in 1956. Out of this union, their beloved daugh-ter, the late Bernetta Renee Brown, was born. Bernetta died in 1981 after bringing lots of joy and happiness to

Mr. William Grafton Hall was born and reared in Frederick, Maryland. He is second of eight children born to Mrs. Adelaide Dixon Hall and the late James T. Hall, Sr. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1953, and served in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he attended Morgan State College in Baltimore, Maryland.
From 1963 to 1969, he was employed at Fort Detrick as a biological technician. He joined the Eastalco Aluminum Company as a foreman in September 1969. He retired from Eastalco in 1993 as a general foreman of the Carbon Plant.

all that he did, he was known for his honesty, integrity, and straightforward style. Most of all, he was (and is) known for his love for Frederick and his commitment to making it the best place for current and future generations.
Mr. Hall continues to be involved in his community. Most notably, he is a member of The Kent Group, a Frederick County coalition that focuses on political and economic empowerment for African Americans. Bill
grandsons. He is an avid golfer and a talented singer, having performed for many years at the Maryland Municipal League Conference in Ocean City, Maryland, churches in the Tri-State area and numerous local events.
