Sunday, March 5 WOMEN OF THE WORLD
Moderator: Cecilia Montesdeoca Panelists: Martha Hernández and Friends
The Women’s Marches that took place around the world on
January 22 were a powerful manifestation of women’s power.
International Women’s Day dates back to the 1900s with roots
in the labor movements. Today the holiday continues to ad-
dress existing inequalities among the genders while recogniz-
ing and celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and politi-
cal achievements of women. Join us for a panel discussion of
the diverse contributions international women in our commu-
nity have made to help empower other women and bring posi-
tive long-term change to North Dakota and beyond.
Cecilia Montesdeoca, native of Bloomington, Illinois, graduat-
ed from Illinois State with a degree in Cultural Anthropology
and Community Health Education and currently works at Da-
kota Resource Council. Martha Hernández works with Nonvio-
lent Peaceforce, a global non-profit organization that promotes
unarmed civilian protection.

Our UU Community
Our UU Folk Choir Welcomes YOU!
The UU Folk Choir welcomes any and all musicians and singers! Practice
begins Friday evenings from 5 to 6 pm at the church, and again before the
service at 10 am. Director Jean King can be reached
at [email protected] if you have any questions.
People, Place, Program (PPP)
Gatherings On Wednesday, March 15th, we will again have our
monthly People, Place, Program Gatherings (PPP) a light
supper and social at 5:30 pm and break into PPP meet-
ings at 6:00 pm.
The PPP Gathering's purpose is to bring more volunteers
into the work of the church -- creating a true community
of action within our congregation.
The People Area mission is to promote spiritual growth
and vibrant community at the BisMan UU Fellowship and
Church by providing our congregation with spiritual
support and opportunities for community engagement
and fellowship. Specifically, we collaborate to develop
and deepen our congregation's approach to hospitality,
greeting, membership, caring and social justice.
The Place Area Vision Statement is providing a safe, se-
cure, and aesthetically-pleasing physical environment
for our congregation.
The Program Area sets the direction of the ministry of the
church. What topics will be discussed and presented on
in Sunday services, what part of the wider world we
bring into our church every Sunday, what values are
promoted from the pulpit--these are also part of the mis-
sion and work of the Program Area.
If you are interested in finding out more about the work
of our church and our PPP Gatherings, call or email the
church office: 701.223.6788 or [email protected].
Welcoming New UU Members!
Ingathering Sunday, March 19
On March 19, new UU members will
be recognized during both Sunday
services.
Am I a Member? What is a Member?
And What is an Ingathering, Anyway? —Janis Cheney
So, starting with the third – easy – answer:
An Ingathering is our UU way of acknowledging and
honoring new members. And we are planning one for
Sunday March 19 at both the 10:30 and 12:30 ser-
vices.
If you have been attending for some time, and are finding
community and connection at our Unitarian Universalist
congregation, perhaps you feel like a member – and it is
likely we think of you as one! As with most organizations,
however, there is a bit of a process…
Our by-laws list three things to be a member: signing the
membership book, supporting the mission and principles
we affirm, and making a ‘contribution of record.’ A con-
tribution of record is generally regarded as a financial
contribution and it can be whatever best fits your circum-
stances – we just need to know that it came from you! As a
member, meeting these three items entitles you to vote at
our business meetings. (Note: as a place where all are
welcome and everyone’s contribution – whether of time,
energy, talent, or treasure – is recognized, exceptions can
also be made to the financial ask).
So, if you have been considering membership (or haven’t
been, but would like to!), please contact Carol Jean
Larsen ([email protected]; 701-516-7848) or Janis
Cheney ([email protected]; 701-426-6950).
And remember – member, friend, seeker, wanderer,
wayfarer, You are Always Welcome Here!

UU Community in Action
WHERE DO YOU STAND?
—Rita Kelly, Board President
“One cannot lead a life that is truly excellent without feeling
that one belongs to something greater or more permanent than
oneself. This is one conclusion that is common to all the vari-
ous religions that have given meaning to people’s lives.”
Above, Forrest Gilmore quotes a noted psychologist in an es-
say on the Seventh UU Principle, Respect for the Interdepend-
ent Web of All Existence of Which We Are a Part.
In 2015 I came back to this fellowship after making highly spot-
ty appearances over the previous two and a half decades. I
enjoyed being back, seeing former friendly faces while appre-
ciating the new ones, too. I would talk to a few folks, listen for
an hour and then head out.
Essentially, although I fully concurred with “Standing on the
Side of Love,” I was basically just “Standing on the Side.”
Thrust into the center of things through a non-initiated encoun-
ter, I first found myself joining Board meetings to fill a vacancy
for the last few months of 2016. Then I was asked if I would be
willing to be nominated to serve on the Board for 2017-19, to
which I said yes. And suddenly—totally gobsmacked—I found
myself Board President, out of an awareness and guilt that eve-
ryone else on the Board already had myriad fellowship respon-
sibilities.
My point? If you, too, are basically “Standing on the Side,” we
are pleased that you’re here with us. It’s a wonderful start. But
consider dipping your toe in to participate more fully. It need-
n’t be a huge leap at first: join a circle supper, come to a com-
mittee meeting that sounds as if it might interest you, sing in
the choir, facilitate a program.
UUs cherish the individual and the search for meaning, but
reaching out to connect with other UUs more fully will lead to
an ever-richer experience.
The Bismarck-Mandan UU organized two Standing
Rock clean-up parties from the church (Saturday, Feb-
ruary 11 & 18) to help clear debris at Oceti Sakowin
camp before spring flooding.

Assembly will be at
the Oak Brook Mar-

April 28-30, 2017.
In spite of our small numbers
in the national religious scene, Unitarian Universalists have
been at the forefront of every significant social change in our
nation's history. Now, more than ever, we need to work with
partners to have an impact in our cities, states
and country.
Our Keynote Speaker will be Rev. Dr. Lee

Dr. Barker's topic will be:
To Multi-faith: A Verb Unitarian Universal-
ism is perfectly situated to promote construc-

understanding and enhanced harmony. Suc-
cess will depend on a new understanding of
what it means to “be engaged.” You can find out more at

board? Do you know what it is about? Read on for some in-
side scoop!
Each year, the MidAmerica Region of the UUA hosts a re-
gional gathering of UUs from the 13 states comprising the
region. This year’s Regional Assembly will be held April 28-
30 at the Chicago Marriott Oak Brook, Oak Brook, IL. Our
congregation will have 3 delegates including our minister.
This year’s theme is
Finding Our Partners: Faith in Action.
As members who have attended past district and regional
meetings will attest, the keynote sessions, workshops, and
worship sessions are energizing and inspiring, as are the
connections with fellow Unitarian Universalists from across
the region. The Assembly also includes the annual MidAm-
erica Region business meeting and election of regional
board members. Bismarck-Mandan UU member Janis Chen-
ey serves on the current regional board.
You can learn more about the Regional Assembly at the

Camp UniStar—-Check It Out!! Would you enjoy a week on a beautiful island retreat where you can unplug, un-
wind, and enjoy nature? A place where you can learn something new and engage -- when you want to -- with a village of old
and new friends who are largely rooted in Unitarian Universalist values?
Camp UniStar is a special week-long rustic retreat for individuals, couples and families with shared values.
Reachable only by water, the camp is surrounded by the Chippewa National Forest on Star Island in Cass
Lake, one of the largest lakes in northern Minnesota, near Bemidji.
The camp's waterfront offers a wide range of activities. The island's forest trails attract hikers. Sunrises and
sunsets encourage meditation. Each year UniStar campers return for the serenity and community, with no
roads or commercial enterprise, and enjoy a week filled with thought-provoking programs, wonderful meals,
and memorable experiences.
During the season, camp offers 12 weeks with various programs – some for youth only, some for adults only,
most for a combination of individuals to family groups. The season opens with a work week fixing up the
camp, and two youth weeks for people entering 7th through 12th grades. In addition to staff, camp capacity
each week is up to 70 campers, who are housed in sleeping rooms in the cabins and the upstairs of the main
lodge, or in a tenting area beside the lake.
You can find the 2017 summer schedule and registration information on the web at http://www.campunistar.org/program/. If
you have questions, there are a number of Bis-Man UU members who have attended including Carol Jean Larsen, Liz Loos,
Janis Cheney & Steve Crane, Don Morrison, Anessa Pfeifer-Johnson. And our own Rev Karen Van Fossan is leading one of the
program weeks this year!

For Your Information: 2016 Financial Picture
Note: The bar graph on top shows income (green) compared to expenses
(brown). The top pie chart is an expense summary; the bottom-most pie
chart shows an income summary. The legends for each graph and chart are
on the right and are unique to that particular graph. Please note the same
colors are used in each graph but are used differently in each one—e.g.,
“staff” in the expense pie chart summary and “pledges” in the income pie
chart summary are both colored green. These charts represent our 2016
finances.
Look for graphs to be presented in our newsletters in the future. Our goal is
that the graphs and more detailed financial information will give our mem-
bers and friends an easy and quick way to understand our church’s financial
health.

“Hope” is the Thing with Feathers
By Emily Dickinson
“Hope” is the thing with feathers—
That perches in the soul—
And sings the tune without the words—
And never stops—at all—
And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—
And sore must be the storm—
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm—
I’ve heard it in the chillest land—
And on the strangest Sea—
Yet—never—in Extremity,
It asked a crumb—of me.
