This multi-agency supported

workshop is responding to a growing need to address the importance and techniques for preserving trees during development and construction. Trees and development are often a point of contention between cities, the construction industry, landscape architects, planners, arborists, and homeowners. Experience from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System suggests a lack of knowledge in the design and construction industry and the general public on what is required to successfully protect trees from construction damage.

Trees make cities more livable,

can attract tourism, foster economic development, and improve air quality. Traditionally, trees have received limited consideration on building sites causing extensive tree damage and mortality. It is important to educate the design and development communities on techniques for tree preservation.

Jack Rowe, ISA

Jack Rowe serves as a Regional Extension Agent and Community Forester to 17 rural communities for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the ALA-TOM RC&D commission.

A native of Kentucky, Jack was educated at the University of Kentucky earning a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture/Horticulture and a minor in Pest Management. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Entomology focusing on Horticultural Entomology.

His past work experience includes work for MTA Horticultural Consultants as a researcher and associate consultant in Horticulture, Entomology (regulatory pest control) and Urban Forestry with an emphasis on Tree Preservation. Other experience includes, Horticulturist for the Louisville Metro Parks System, Landscape Administration with Dent Enterprises. Most recently, Jack worked in sales and consulting with The Care Of Trees, Tree Preservation and Landscape Restoration Division in the Washington, DC, Baltimore region.

Jack is also a member of the International Society of Arboriculture, a Certified Arborist, and a member of the Entomological Society of America.

Rip Weaver, ASLA

Rip Weaver, ASLA serves as the Executive Director of the Aldridge Botanical Gardens in Hoover, Alabama. Rip was the former Town Landscape Architect for the Town of Mt. Laurel, a development of EBSCO Development Company. Prior to Mt. Laurel, Rip opened the Birmingham office for Sherlock, Smith and Adams, Inc. of Montgomery, one of the largest and oldest architecture/engineering firms in Alabama.

Rip received his Bachelor of Science in Ornamental Horticulture/Landscape Design from Auburn University, and his Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Louisiana State University. While at LSU, he was awarded the American Society of Landscape Architects national Certificate of Honor for Excellence in the Study of Landscape Architecture.

Rip has been involved with projects around the southeast ranging from small retail to streetscape redesign to large military planning to the creation of a new town (Mt. Laurel). He maintains a strong interest in New Urbanism and its opportunities for guiding both new and old development.

James Urban, FASLA, ISA

James Urban, FASLA specializes in the design of trees and soils in urban spaces. He has written and lectured extensively on the subject of urban tree planting and has been responsible for the introduction of many innovations including most of the current standards relating to urban tree plantings. He was instrumental in the development of structural cells and structural planting soils for use under sidewalk pavements, micro root paths and macro soil trench techniques.

James Urban is credited with helping to re-awaken the profession of landscape architecture to the skills required to successfully plant trees in difficult urban soils. In 2007, he was awarded the ASLA Medal of Excellence for his work with urban trees and soils. His 2008 book ‘Up By Roots: Healthy Trees and Soils in the Built Environment’, is becoming one of the principle tree and soil references.

His research into urban trees has informed an area of practice in the preservation of large trees as part of the construction process. Based on a thorough understanding of the construction process, the sites soils and drainage, root and branch structure and the specific requirements of particular species, Mr. Urban has undertaken many successful tree preservation efforts. These have included preserving individual trees in the commercial core of Downtown Silver Spring, Maryland, the Hill School in Pennsylvania, the National Japanese American Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial and Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC. He is the author of the pages on urban tree installation and tree preservation in Architectural Graphic Standards.
