Bike Force – Discovery Tour of Italy 2012
Tour Two: Tuscany/Lakes and Mountains -‐ featuring Passo del Stelvio
Dates: 27th May 2012 – 9th June 2012 Arrive/Depart: Milan Malpensa Airport
Lucca: 5 nights – 4 rides (27th May) The medieval town of Lucca, with its beautiful surroundings, has been chosen by many road cycling professional teams as a logistics base. Lucca town is completely surrounded by
XVI Century walls. The walls, 4.3ksm long, are allowed only to walkers and cyclists and they are an ideal warm up and perfect start point to the rides.
A wealthy and colourful town that draws a more discerning tourist than Florence or Pisa, it is sufficiently off the beaten track to have kept its civility and reserve. Lucca is a city of merchants who know how to woo the
visitor and the shopper, but the pace of life varies between slow and slower.
Our stay includes apartment accommodation inside the walls of the city, and an amazing dinner evening at a country villa (an absolute highlight) plus a ride which includes the climb up Monte Sierra.
Menaggio: 3 nights – 2 rides (1st June)
Lake Como is one of the most beautiful places in Italy. It also has links to cycling. It is the place that the Giro di Lombardia race always plays out its decisive moves – thanks to the mountains that rise up from the edge of the lake. Lake Como is also the home to the chapel dedicated to all cyclists – the Madonna del Ghisallo – the chapel sits at the top of one of the most famous climbs in the area.
We will be based at Menaggio, hailed as a thriving tourist and busy commercial centre, it is still a quiet and peaceful town located in the central area of Lake Como.
Bormio: 5 nights – 4 rides (4th June)
Bormio is the gateway to the mountains. In the area surrounding Bormio are some of the greatest and most historic
ascents in Italy. Here is where we climb the famous Passo de Stelvio and Passo de Gavia and where you will experience some amazing scenery. Bormio and the surrounding valleys provide the most spectacular cycling playground anyone could wish for. A support van will accompany us on these rides to provide support and carry warm clothes for the descent from the snow filled summit. During our time here we also include a trip to Livorno, the only duty free town in Italy.
