Welcome to the LibertyCon!LETTER FROM DIRECTORAfter Leuven, Berlin and Prague, the biggest event of the year for European Students For Liberty moves to Belgrade, Serbia!
In 2011 at the first ESFL Conference ever we have had the chance to hear about BitCoin, the cryptocurrency to explode in the years to come. The Darknet allowed for a more peaceful voluntary exchange. Freer and easier exchange is also the target of hundreds of companies founded during this period utilising the newly founded blockchain technology trying to ultimately solve the ‘trust problem’ allowing for a more effective cooperation without the need for central authority such as the State or Central bank. AR and VR are slowly entering our lives as well as Internet of Things and technology is more present in our lives than ever before, allowing for more prosperity and cooperation. On the other hand, there are legitimate reasons to be afraid for our privacy as governments have even more ways to track and infringe on privacy of citizens. Internet has allowed for a faster communication and bigger audience to any individual than ever in human history before and yet there are many reasons to believe that freedom of speech and expression is under attack in many places around the world and primarily in those institutions where it should be upheld the most - Universities. We have more tools for free trade and yet protectionist policies are somehow back in fashion.
The growth of the movement for liberty has been a constant during this time though. Despite the new rise of collectivist ideas, left and right alike followed by a symptomatic resurgence of strong, authoritarian leaders in many democracies around the world, throughout this last decade for how long Students For Liberty have been around, we have seen a steady increase of people from all walks of life accepting the ideas of classical liberalism and libertarianism. More than 2,000 Students For Liberty leaders around the world, from Venezuela to Serbia, from Georgia to Japan, organised events and activities and spread the message of liberty to more than 45,000 people who attended our trainings or events in the past year alone. SFL has helped generate numerous success stories, help start non-profits, empower and connect liberty-minded students around the world. This movement working in Spain, Belarus, Iceland, Brazil, US and Canada and many other places carries a positive message. An idea of free and voluntary cooperation opposed to coercion, persistence in creating alternatives to overgrow the government, openness to critical thinking and academic discussion and a message of Peace, Love and Liberty.
Sincerely & For Liberty,Aleksandar Kokotović,European Students For Liberty Programs Director
