WEDNESDAY 6 JULYMelba Tribute ConcertThe Melba Opera Trust presents a tribute to the great Melbafeaturing Hannah Dahlenburg and accompanying pianistRhodri Clarke. The programme includes Handel, Arditi,Donizetti, Liszt and others. Fresh and thrilling artists!

Australian-Canadian Soprano Hannah Dahlenburg has been a soloist for many Australian ensembles and is a regularartist for Opera Australia performing Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute (2016, 2015, and 2014), ‘nailing every note of the famous aria with startling accuracy and clarity, whilststriding the stage with confidence and flair’ (Arts Review,2014).

Rhodri Clarke, with first class honours from the RoyalCollege of Music London, performs internationally as a pianosoloist, accompanist and chamber musician. Last year hecompleted a ten-city tour of Europe with Rolando Villazón and his chamber group Bolívar Soloists performing in venuesincluding Berlin’s Philharmonie, the Vienna Konzerthaus,London’s Royal Festival Hall and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris.

THURSDAY 7 &FRIDAY 8 JULYThe Magic PuddingNo matter how often this story is told, just like the pudding itself, you always want to experience it again. Kirk Alexander and Brenda Addie present another magical day for children

at Beleura. Performance adapted by the late Stephanie Daniel from The Magic Pudding by Norman Lindsay. The book was originally published by Angus & Robertson Publishers in 1918.

14-24 JULY RARE BOOK WEEKTreasures in the HouseDuring his visit to London in 1953 John Tallis wrote to his family about visiting book shops in search of special andrare books for his brother, finally finding a set of AlexanderPope volumes. We celebrate Rare Book Week by displaying:

The Great Breath by Christian Waller, John Tallis’ copy No. 56 and the Foundation’s purchase, No. 24. Klytie Pate, Christian Waller’s niece, published a second edition,

John Tallis’ copy being No. 261. These and Waller’s The Gates of Dawn will be on display in the house accompanied by an informal talk over lunch about thesespecial treasures.

really delighted The National Theatre’s Graduating Class audiences, is all about adifficult dinner guest. (The movie starred Bette Davis and Ann Sheridan who weredressed to sensation by Orry-Kelly – Movies at Beleura above). The stars of thefuture perform today!

The Tallis Foundation supports The National Theatre with the Florence YoungScholarship in honour of Frank Van Straten OAM.

MONDAY 25 JULYTalented Performers and Beautiful InstrumentsDaniel de Borah and Dale Barltrop perform on two instru-ments by master craftsmen separated by more than 230 years.

This year is a landmark for Beleura – Sir George Tallis purchased Beleura in1916 – so to celebrate, we have pulled out all stops and have commissioned

Bruce Raggatt to confect an extravaganza, 1916 based on the shows Sir Georgewas promoting in the JC Williamson theatres in that year. 1916 is scheduled forlate August.The amazing people at ANAM return with two performances in afour-recital Series. In August we celebrate 100 years of Tallis ownership, Rare BookWeek, sixty years of The National Trust, The National Theatre’s Graduating Classand we welcome back Daniel de Borah and The Melba Opera Trust.

Later in the year …The launch of The Melba Rose Garden, Alex Raineri with Rachmaninoff,ANAM, with Porgy and Bess, Wilma and Friends, Plexus, Stefan Cassomenos andof course our Christmas Bonbons, this year in December. Telephone to pre-book.

It has often been remarked that there are no flowers in the house. There is a reason – John Tallis could not tolerate them. He suffered and suffered from hayfever. Once, his housekeeper, who at that stage did not live in, put in somedaffodils and was dragged from his bed in the middle of the night and rushed toBeleura to find a suffering, streaming John Tallis demanding they be got rid of.

However, curated by Joan Simpson and her team, the house will be bedeckedwith flowers, and being Spring, the garden well worth a stroll. The HighgroveFlorilegium, a set of books celebrating HRH Prince Charles’ magnificent garden at Highgrove, will be on display.

Admission on Wednesday 14 is by sealed envelope for the St Peter’s BellamyHall Restoration Fund, Mornington.

FRIDAY 16 SEPTEMBERThe Australian National Academy of Music(ANAM) Series No. 2 – ICONIC Featuring The Warsaw Concertoarranged for two pianos by Percy GraingerThis classic masterpiece, originally written as incidental

music for the movie Dangerous Moonlight, was a favourite of Australia's greatpianist/composer Percy Grainger who made this fabulous arrangement. It was also associated with Liberace, the iconic showman who brought joy to so many.

There will be an opportunity to wander through the House decorated with Spring flowers.

WEDNESDAY 21 SEPTEMBERMovies at BeleuraWhen ANAM gave us their program for theANAM Series this year we saw they intendedthe Warsaw Concerto by Richard Addinsell.We did some research. Originally, it was the sound track fora 1941 movie Dangerous Moonlight. Steve Rattle has found a copy and will put together a program: the main featureDangerous Moonlight and the Warsaw Concerto.

FRIDAY 23 SEPTEMBERA program of romantic German songsBronte Zemlic and Luke SevernA magical combination, a mezzo-soprano and Cello. Highlyrecommended by ANAM Syndicate member Heather Johnson,at twenty-five Melbourne-born mezzo-soprano Bronte Zemlichas the world at her feet. She is one of Australia’s mostpromising rising stars performing for many notable musicians in Australia, Europe and America including American sopranoAmy Johnson, Israeli soprano Sylvia Greenberg, American/Austrian conductor David Aronson and Australia’s ownMerilyn Quaife and Yvonne Kenny.

A protégé of Russian cellist Karine Georgian, Luke Severnhas been praised for his unique musicality and expressiveinterpretations. Born in the UK he moved to Australia at a young age and began Cello at the age of twelve quicklydisplaying a flair for it. Within three years he was awarded a

place at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. He now performsregularly in Europe and Australia.

For this recital Daniel plays the Stuart & Sons Piano of 2010, joined by Dale Barltrop, concertmaster of theMelbourne Symphony Orchestra and newly appointed leader of the Australian String Quartet, playing a 1784 Guadagnini Violin. A program of works for violin and piano by Mozart and Prokofiev showcases the mature mastery of the ViolinSonata in F-minor alongside the youthful wit and strikingoriginality of the Russian master’s early works.

Celebrating a Centenary 1916 - 2016In August we celebrate The Tallis Centenary at Beleura –

Sir George purchased Beleura in 1916.So given that musical comedy was a mainstay,

we worked on a few ideas for the month of August.

THURSDAY 4 AUGUSTSir George Presents … Florence, Young as EverOne of JC Williamson’s most successful ventures was the Royal Comic Opera Company and its greatest star was FlorenceYoung, who was Sir George’s sister-in-law – Lady Tallis’ sister.

It’s a sparkling show devised to launch Florence Young’sbiography by Frank Van Straten OAM and in the tradition of

JC Williamson, revived, refreshed and even more… The scintillating Wendy Grosebrings the darling of the Post-Edwardian Comic Opera scene to life in a rollickingperformance.

FRIDAY 12 AUGUSTA Conversation with Frank Van Straten and Anthony KnightJoan and Michael Tallis wrote The Silent Showman in 1999 –reviewed by Kathleen Brisbane as ‘one of the most importantbooks on Australian Theatre yet to be published’. It was based on research by John Tallis and used for the Tallis FamilyArchives as a primary source.

The Silent Showman, Sir George Tallis, married AmeliaYoung, a singer in Light Comic Opera; her sister Florence Young became a legend. Frank van Straten OAM, Australia’sforemost theatre historian, wrote her story: Florence Young and the Golden Years of the Australian Theatre. Frank will talk aboutFlorence and her world. Anthony Knight will talk about Sir George and his world and film buff, Steve Rattle, will add a visual component.

FRIDAY 2 SEPTEMBER & FRIDAY 7 OCTOBERAshley HribarAustralian pianist, Ashley Hribar, is a prize-winning solo artist,improviser, composer and chamber musician. Combining the musicof yesterday, today and tomorrow, he dazzles audiences with histechnical mastery, fine musicianship and intense performance

energy. Winner of the 2005 International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition inAmsterdam and the 2008 Michael Kieren-Harvey Fellowship, he has since become aleading advocate of contemporary and twentieth century music. Ashley frequently toursAustralia, Europe and China giving live broadcasts for the ABC and Classic FM Radio.

A cellist now based in Germany, Kate Green carved a remarkable career and last yearreturned to Beleura with her Cello and an accompanist, Ashley Hribar. The recital was magic.

Ashley was more than highly impressed with the Stuart & Sons Piano and said hewould love to perform for us. ‘The CD he left was played in the car on the way home and stayed the top favourite for months’.

First recital on Friday 2 September will include the astonishing Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues, Rubinstein in Berlin for speaking pianist and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for solo piano. Ashley is an artist and an amazing talent. I suspect this and his recital on 7 October will be the standout events for 2016.

The second recital on Friday 7 October will again include the iconic Winnsboro CottonMill Blues (a Jelly Roll Morton Finger Breaker) and after interval, a very exciting first,Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Junior, a silent film of 1924 with a live piano accompaniment.Another hit of the year.
