BFounded on the wealth of the world’s largest alluvial gold mining deposits, Ballarat is a city rich in heritage and culture that looks confidently to the future. Located just over an hour’s drive northwest of Melbourne, Ballarat is Victoria’s largest inland city with a flourishing population estimated at over 100,000 people.

Gold was first discovered in Ballarat in 1851. Within a year, 20,000 ‘diggers’ had arrived from all over the world, most notably the United Kingdom, Europe and China. On December 3, 1854, Ballarat once again carved its name in Australian history with the Eureka Rebellion, Australia’s only civil uprising. It was a brief but bloody battle that saw miners take up arms against authorities in their fight for democracy and “a fair go”. The City is acknowledged as the birthplace of the Australian Spirit.

Today, visitors are drawn to the region by this rich heritage, enhanced by grand architecture, spacious parks, beautiful gardens, culture, art and sumptuous eateries. Lydiard Street, Ballarat, is recognised as one of the country’s most intact Victorian streetscapes and is a much sought after location for film and television.

Ballarat has successfully managed to balance the demands for progress while preserving its heritage. Ballarat is the touring hub for the Goldfields tourist region and is also a destination on the spectacular Great Southern Touring Route.
