• The axial skeleton has three major components

• Skull

• Vertebral Column

• Bony Thorax

Skull

• When studying the skull it is best to break it up into 3 categories

• Cranium

• Facial Bones

• Hyoid Bone

Cranium

• The cranium is composed of 8 major bones

• They are all single bones except for 2 which are paired bones (a left and a right)

• Parietal Bones (Left and Right)

• Temporal Bones (Left and Right)

• There are 14 facial bones

• 12 of them are paired (Left and Right)

• 2 of them are single bones
