Mapfilesanddisplaymaps

Amapfileisadrawingthatconnectstoallthesourcesforyourmap:geospatialfeatures,drawingobjects,rasterimages,andattributedata.

Eachmapfilecancontainmultipledisplaymaps(forprintingorforonlinedistribution),inwhichyoucanselectivelyhideorshowitemsinyourmap.Mapsexistonlyasconceptualstructures,andarenotseparateentitiesorfiles.

Youcanapplystylestotheitemsinadisplaymap,basedondata,layers,andothercriteria.Changesthatyoumaketotheappearanceofitemsinamapdonotaffecttheactualdatainyourmapfile.



Sourcefilesandmapfiles

Onemapfilecanusemultiplesources.Forexample,youmightattachaDWGfiletoyourmapfile,queryinoneortwoofitslayers,andaddthemasDisplayManagerlayers.Then,youmightconnecttoaSHPfilethatbecomesanotherlayerinyourdisplaymap,oraddfeaturesfromageospatialdatabase.Themapfileremembersalltheconnectionsandwhichobjectsyou’veaddedtothemapfile.

Therelationshipbetweenthesourcesandthemapfileisdynamic.Ifthedatainthesourcefilechanges,thosechangesareupdatedinyourmapfile.Whenyouchangetheobjectsinyourmapfile,youcansavethosechangesbacktotheiroriginalsources.

Fordrawingobjects,youcanlockthesourcedrawingssonooneelsecanusethem,andyoucanusesavesetoptionstocontrolwhetheryourchangesaresavedbacktotheoriginaldrawingsoraffectthecurrentmaponly.

Forgeospatialfeatures,youcansetanoptiontosavechangestotheoriginalsourceautomatically,oryoucanworkofflineandupdatethefeaturesourcewhenyoufinishediting.Checkoutafeaturetolockitforotherusers(ifthefeaturesourcesupportsthis)andcheckitbackintomakeitavailableagain.



Drawingobjectsandgeospatialfeatures

Objectsinmapsfallmainlyintotwocategories:drawingobjectsandgeospatialfeatures.DrawingobjectscomefromAutoCADdrawingsandgeospatialfeaturesfromacentralizeddatastore(likeanOracledatabase)oraspatialdatafile(likeaSHPorSDFfile).

SomeAutoCADMap3Dfunctionsaremoreusefulforoneobjecttypethanforanother.Forexample,thedrawingcleanupfeatureeliminatesextraneouslinesinDWGfiles,butdrawingcleanupdoesnotworkonageospatialfeature.
