Earth Day Anna M.
Earth day is a special day that celebrates the
importance of the world. Earth Day is celebrated on
April 22 and events are held worldwide to
demonstrate their support for environmental
protection. Earth day is celebrated by more than 193
countries every year. The first Earth day was
Wednesday April 22, 1970. The earth day in 1970
was a very important day, people stood along the
streets and parks to demonstrate a healthy,
sustainable environment.
There are many things that you can do to help
make a healthy, and sustainable environment. One
of the easiest things that you could do on earth day
is to unplug phone chargers or other chargers if you
are not using them and to turn off the lights in a
room that you are not in. Those two simple things
that you can do, not only on Earth day but every
day, will help conserve electricity. Some more
things that you can do on earth are to plant trees,
make a garden, go around your community and pick
up trash, have a picnic, carry your own water bottle
around, recycle and you can prepare for mother's
day on Sunday, May 8 by getting a green gift for
your mother. If you plant a tree or make a garden
that will help the air and make the pollution
decrease and planting a garden will provide you
with fresh food and/or plants and you don’t have to
use electricity to make the food, you don’t have to
freeze it or heat it up, all you have to do is clean it
off with water. Picking up trash around your
community and recycling will help with less trash
and litter on the ground and that will help animals
because some animals will eat the trash and makes
them sick and might cause them to die and recycling
saves energy because the manufacturer doesn't have
to produce something new from raw natural
resources.

A 6th Grader’s Guide to NorthBay NorthBay will probably be one of the most fun things you do in all of your middle school years. But to ensure that you have a great time, make sure you know what to expect, and come prepared for this awesome trip!
What to expect at NorthBay
If you think you’re sleeping in, you’re wrong. Don’t think you’ll be able to sleep in, because you have to wake up somewhat early in the morning to be at breakfast. It’s also probably not a good idea to stay up late, because each day at North Bay will consist of all day activities and events, and you’re going to want your energy for that. …continued on page 6

Party Ideas By: Emma V. and Sydney W.
Baking Competition: Have the guests make
cupcakes or brownies and supply them with
different types of frosting, food dye,
sprinkles, and toppings. Give the kids treat-
themed prizes if they win. Favors can be the
treats that they made.
Sports Tournament: Have someone who is
not competing, like a family member, split
the guests into two teams. Play games like
basketball, soccer, football, and lacrosse.
Whatever team wins the majority of the
games wins. If there is a tie in the end, let the
guests vote on the game to be the tiebreaker.
Foods can be pizza, chicken tenders, fries,
potato chips, hotdogs, and casual foods.
Favors could be mini basketball hoops and
basketballs, or customized jerseys or tee
shirts.
Outdoor Party: This party is a laidback kind
of party just invite over a bunch of friends get
a bunch of junk food get some water guns or
a sprinkler/hose. Have a huge bonfire and
roast marshmallows and hang around and
talk. Watch a movie under the stars.
Garden Party: If you are looking for a more
classy party, take on an outdoor party! Have
a garden party… invite a few friends over
and have finger sandwiches and macaroons.
Talk in the yard and eat up!!
History of Lacrosse By: Connor M.
Lacrosse is an old American game that the Native
Americans played to settle disagreements among many
different tribes. Many of the fields that they played on
could have been as long as 2 miles long. One of the very
few rules that they had was to not touch the ball with your
hands, you can only use your stick. The sticks were made
out of carved out wood to make the stick very strong and
the pocket was made with leather. The game was given
its name when French settlers used their language to
create the certain parts of the name at a time. They finally
ended up with lacrosse. Nobody played the game except
the Native Americans until the mid-nineteenth century
when English-speaking Montrealers adopted the
Mohawk game. The game quickly grew popular in
Canada and spread throughout regular people in the
country. They excluded the Iroquois from playing the
game at world events. That barrier was then broken in the
1980’s. It is now known as the fastest growing sport in
the world as it is worldwide and has over half a million
players. Now the game is using manufactured plastic
heads and aluminum shafts instead of an all wooden
stick. But the Iroquois and southeastern tribes still play
their original game with the same rules. But now, there is
an award that goes to the best college player called the
Tewaaraton award and two Iroquois Indians named Lyle
and Myles Thompson won the award. The MLL stands
for Major League Lacrosse is the outdoor professional
league and the NLL stands for National Lacrosse League
was established in 1986.
Coachella By: Katie H. and Kristi L.
Coachella is an Indio music and arts festival. This year
Coachella is April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo
Club in Indio, California. This festival includes many different
types of live music, such as rock music, independent music, hip
hop music, and electronic dance music. Coachella consists of
artist including Guns and Roses, G-Eazy, and Ellie Goulding.
There is a type of music for everyone.
Coachella was founded by Paul Tollett in 1999 and is
organized by Goldenvoice, but its origin can be traced back
even farther. In 1993, there was the first Pearl Jam concert,
which resulted in many bands vocalizing their opinions in
processing fees and revenue. This eventually brought the bands
to the Empire Polo Club and the first Coachella Festival began
in 1999 and lasted just over two days. Every year since 2001,
Coachella has become an annual event.

Festival Fashion By: Hanna P
As spring has come to a start, music festival season is here.
There are so many concerts and music festivals to attend this
year, and these events are the perfect time to experiment with
new styles and express yourself through fashion. Here are some
recommendations to find the perfect outfit for your music
concert or festival, these outfits could also be worn for regular
spring and summer days as well.
The first step is to find a budget. Putting together an outfit,
especially one in music festival fashion, can be quite costly.
The best way to save money when shopping is to search at thrift
stores for clothing pieces you can work with or upcycle. If you
can’t find anything there, go to stores that will have clothing to
match the music festival or concert you’re attending. Stores
such as Forever21 and Pacsun will have good outfits for many
of the music festivals, while for alternative or rock festivals
such as Lollapalooza you can find some good band
merchandise and pieces from stores such as Spencer’s or Hot
Topic.
Not every music festival is the same. And every music
festival has its own vibe. For example, most people go to
Coachella wearing very bohemian outfits. Loose fitting, floral
or paisley blouses or dresses with flower crowns. Many people
also wear statement jewelry. For a festival such as lollapalooza,
there is a huge variety of music genres. People dress in
Coachella style outfits or in more Tokyo style fashion. Many
people are seen wearing creepers with rompers or overalls.
Beanies or other hats are common as well.
There are so many different concerts and festivals to visit this
year. The best way to show who you are at these events is your
outfit. Although there are many trends at these festivals, your
outfit should represent you. The key to looking good regardless
of the occasion is wearing something that you love.
NHL History By: Jake G.
The NHL first season was started on December 19, 1917. During this time there were five teams, the Canadiens, the Wanderers, the Quebec Bulldogs, the Ottawa Senators, and the Toronto Arenas. After the Pro Hockey League folded two leagues emerged. These two leagues were the NHA and the PCL. In 1914 the two leagues played in a championship series and the winner was awarded the Stanley Cup which was given by Lord Stanley. During World War II the NHA had to stop operating and five elite teams from Canada formed the NHL in its place.By 1926 the PCL had folded and the ten teams in the NHL split into two divisions, the East and the West. The winner of these two divisions meet and play for the Stanley Cup at the end of each season. Last season the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The team that has won the most Stanley Cups is the Montreal Canadiens who have won the Cup 24 times out of the 95 times that the Cup has been won.
Activities/Events at NorthBay
By: Charlotte KL. & Kylie M.
Here are a fun awesome things you may do at NorthBay...
The Giant Swing- A super fun three person swing that sends you flying up and down with the view of the water below. The Zipline- Basically just a zipline….it’s still a lot of fun though The Ropes Course- The ropes course allows you to climb high into the trees. You will walk across a wooden platform that will lead you to another tree. Then you will move to a tightrope, which is a little harder. Then you go to a bridge that feels unstable at first but I can assure you it’s safe and it is an awesome time. Kayaking- Kayaking is relaxing, fun, and overall a great thing to be able to do at northbay. Bring a bathing suit because there is a chance you could go kayaking. Oh, and be prepared for chilly water! Open Gym- The gym at North Bay has basketball hoops you can play at, as well as a ga-ga ball pit. You may not have ever heard of this game, but if you go into the gym, you will figure it out, and trust me, it’s very fun! Outdoor Sports- You many also have a chance to play some sports in the grassy area of North Bay, such as kickball, frisbee, or simpler games such as tag. Rock Climbing- At Horseshoe point you can not only find the gift shop and really good ice cream but an indoor rock climbing wall! Try to go when no one else does because the line does get pretty long.

Service Learning By: Mackenzie B.
Every year students from schools all across America participate in Service Learning. Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that combines meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to develop the learning experience, teach national responsibility, and strengthen communities. This year, the Seventh grade is collecting canned and boxed foods to send to St. Christopher's food bank in Stevensville Maryland. There are about 3.5 million people in the United States that are homeless or are living in emergency shelters. In 2014, there were 46.7 million people in poverty.
The Hubble Telescope Jordan H.
On April 24, 1990, the Hubble Telescope was
launched, and this year will be the 26th anniversary
of the launch. The telescope was named after Edwin
Hubble, and his accomplishments. He discovered
that the universe is always expanding. The Hubble
Telescope was launched in Florida. On May 20,
1990, the first picture was taken and sent back to
Earth. Just last year, on July 14, 2015, the Hubble
went past, and got the closest we have ever gotten to
Pluto. Now, I’m just going to include pictures that
the telescope has taken. Enjoy.
I hope you enjoyed it! Go to

Stress Relief By: Jessica S.
April is Stress Awareness Month, so this month should be used to calm down and not be as stressed. Sometimes, this can be very hard, so here’s 10 things you can do to calm down.
1. Keep a journal. Sometimes it can be relaxing to draw or to write in a journal.
2. Start a memory jar. This way, you can open it whenever you may feel you need it and see all the amazing memories you’ve made.
3. Take a nature walk. Seeing the beauty of Mother Nature can sometimes be one of the most relaxing things in the world.
4. Take a nap. Sometimes stress might become more apparent when you’re tired, so take a little bit out of your day to sleep. This can make you feel a lot better.
5. Listen to music. Music is proven to have a soothing effect on the mood, and is also proven to generally increase the mood when upbeat.
6. Squeeze a stress ball. Stress balls are made to help relieve stress.
7. Breathe. Taking a few deep breaths every once in awhile is a very relieving thing to do, as it helps to relieve your heart and other muscles while also helping your breathing slow down.

Remember the Earth A poem by Ellie B.
Remember the Earth it is what gives us life. The least you could do is spread a few bags of mulch or two. You don’t want to spread trash it causes strife. And the last thing you want is strife between the Earth and you. Nature is more complex than you think. The birds, the bees, the plants, the trees, And thousands of species on the brink Of disappearing forever closer than you think. But you can help take it from me, Pick up some trash on a beach. Maybe even plant a tree. Remember the Earth!

Spring Décor By: Abby Coulson
1. The first idea is a cute boot flower pot. The things you
will need are boots of your choice, flowers of your
choice (real or fake), pebbles or rocks, and a ribbon.
The first thing you need to do is put the pebbles or
rocks in the boots then put the flowers in the pebbles r
rocks. Then tie a ribbon around the boots. Your
finished product should look something like this.
2. The next thing is to make a spring sign. The tins
you will need are small bricks, and paint. The first
thing is to paint the blocks many different colors.
Then paint letters so it spells spring on each of the
blocks. Your final product should look something
like this.
3. The next thing is to make a cute umbrella flower
pot. The things you will need are an umbrella of
your choice, flowers of your choice (real or fake),
and a ribbon. The first thing to do open the
umbrella so that it is upside down put the flowers
in it the way you want and tie it up with a ribbon.
Your final product should look something like

…..NorthBay continued
You will have many outdoor activities and go on adventures through the woods. You will go on trails through the woods, and some areas won’t be as clear as other trails. These areas could be muddy, overgrown, etc. Don’t wear your new, favorite shoes, because chances are they’ll get muddy. Also, make sure you have tennis shoes or shoes you can walk in for hiking and outdoor activities. Prepare for rain! I cannot stress this enough. Obviously April is known for its rain, and you will not be having fun if you’re soaking wet. To be prepared for rain, bring a rain coat, rain boots, and pants you can be comfortable in wet. I would suggest athletic gear, as it will most likely keep you comfortable in the rain. Sweatpants are obviously comfy, and I would suggest bringing them, but beware that cotton materials such as sweatpants absorb water and don’t dry quickly. Also, ponchos can work very well and keep the majority of you comfortable and dry. Ponchos are also sold at the North Bay gift shop. …continued on page 7

Spice Gardening
Tips
By Harper R
If you don’t have any ideas for Earth Day, one thing
you could do is start a small garden. But why spices?
Some spices are small and easy to maintain, but can
also be used in recipes.
How to Get Started:
Different plants are used to different temperatures
and conditions. The ones for purchase near you most
likely will do well in the plant hardiness zone you live
in. (Kent Island is in zone 7).
Some plants prefer more sun than others so check the
tag on the plant you buy or ask an employee at the place
you are purchasing the plant.
Basic planting soil s and small to medium sized pots
should work for your spices.
Care: Make sure to properly water plants often. It 8is
especially important during the summer and hot
whether to water the plant often and keep an eye on the
dampness of the soil. If the soil feels dry like mulch,
the plant probably needs water. If it recently rained you
can most likely skip watering your spices.
Be sure to prune dead parts off of the plant to keep it
healthy. Additionally, make sure to weed your spices.
Very leafy spices can have weeds hiding under there
leafs so make sure to weed thoroughly.
Be careful to check your plants for bugs since some
bugs like to eat various spices.
The spices I personally recommend are sage, parsley
(image above), and rosemary to name a few.
…..NorthBay continued
Dress appropriately for the conditions. Definitely bring clothes you can hike in/can do outdoor activities in. This is very important, proper clothing is essential for a good NorthBay experience. I would suggest athletic clothing, such as athletic leggings, t-shirts/tank-tops, jackets, soccer pants, sweatshirts, sweatpants, yoga pants, track pants, joggers, tennis shoes, etc. Remember too, that while you’re doing all of these activities, comfort is more important than style. Make sure you have a variety of clothing too, because the weather can vary. It could be warmer, colder, humid, rainy, sunny, etc. The weekend before you leave for your trip, check the weather so you know what to wear. Also, regardless of the weather report bring layers because it could be colder at part of the day, but warmer at another. NorthBay Live is a show you will go to at the end of the day; bring nicer clothes for it. There is a gift shop at NorthBay where you can buy souvenirs. There will also be a place to buy food and snacks. You will want to remember this amazing week and why not get a souvenir you can bring home with you or even wear. If you plan on getting sweatpants, a shirt, a tank top, or other clothes just remember it tends to be expensive there. There are also cheaper things from the gift shop you can buy. Be prepared for a long bus ride. The ride to NorthBay is about an hour and 40 minutes, but it could be longer or shorter depending on conditions. Bring things you can do on the bus so you don’t just sit around for 2 hours.
This isn’t a vacation, you will be graded on the work you do in your journal they provide to you.

Travel Journal: Russia By: Zoe Q.
I know what you are probably thinking,” Zoë, why are you doing Russia during April?” Well I was
looking at the holidays for April and one of them was Seward’s day; a national holiday in Alaska. But I
couldn’t do the United States since we are supposed to be traveling and I’m pretty sure we all live in the
US. But Seward’s Day celebrates the day the US bought Alaska from Russia. So I was like, “I’ll do Russia
since this holiday has a connection.” So into the cold climate that is Russia!
According to BBC, Russia is home to at least 190 ethnic groups. 77.7% is actually Russian, 3.7% is
Tatar, 1.4% is Ukrainian, 1.1% is Bashkir, 1% is Chuvash, 1% Chechen, 10.2% is other, and 3.9% are
unspecified.
Since there are so many ethnicities, I’m guessing there will also be a lot of languages to go with. Aside
from the main language, Russian (duh), and English, a common second language (again, duh), there are
about 100 minor languages that are spoken in the country of Russia. The most popular is Dolgang, which
is spoken by 5.3 percent of the population, which is at like 141,049,000 million people - and unbelievably
this is a decline from 1992 when it was at 148,689,000.
I was going to do religions next, but then I realized not everybody is comfortable with talking about
religions (coughcoughmecoughcough) so I will go onto something everybody is comfortable with: Russian
food! And if you aren’t comfortable with this, I am sorry.
“One of the most well-known traditional Russian foods that may seem strange to an outsider is borshch,
also spelled borscht. This is a beet soup that is full of vegetables and meat and is typically served with a
dollop of sour cream, a staple of many Russian dishes.” … A what? A staple? Why are Russians eating
staples! (Okay, so not only is it a piece of bent metal that holds things together, but it is also “a main or
important element of something, especially of a diet.”)
There is also pirozhkis, small baked buns filled with potatoes, meat, cabbage or cheese. And the website
wants you to know that they should not, under any circumstances, be confused with piegros, or Polish
dumplings; do not confuse them, this is important! (There are also things like caviar - fish eggs - but that
ain’t important. Psh! What are you talking about?!)
Another stereotype: bears! The bear population in Russia was at 20,000. But after the Soviet Union fell,
it dropped to about 12,500. I also tried to find the number of bear attacks in 2015 for this but all that came
up was individual bear attacks that have occurred in Russia, let us just say they are very aggressive.
That’s all folks, bye!
(Disclaimer: All stereotype comments in this article were made for the sake of comedy. Please do not take
them seriously if they are in some way offensive to you. And any other even slightly offensive comments;
I tried to keep it nice and such, but if somehow there is an offensive comment, I am sorry. I did not want
to offend anyone.)
