ATM Azienda Trasporti MilanesiMilan Metro Line 1 signalling upgrade
In December 2006, Alstom was awarded a contract by ATM (Azienda TrasportiMilanesi) to renew and upgrade the signaling system of the 29 km Milan Metro Line 1 – which carries 500,000 passengers daily –thereby achieving the highest ridership
on a metro line in Italy.
KEY BENEFITS
Higher performance-The moving block principle of Urbalis 400 provides shorter headways, which leads to a capacity 53% higher. Better commercial speed reduces commute times.
Seamless migration-To avoid disruption of service while existing lines are still in operation, Alstom developed a technique for migrating from a conventional signalling to a radio-based ATC system with minimal line closures.
Optimized Life Cycle Cost (LCC)-The energy saving timing is calculated to transfer energy between accelerating and braking trains. If regenerative braking is unavailable due to long train intervals, the system will make maximum use of train coasting to save energy by up to 30%.

Project Context….. To meet the increasing mobility needs of a city as large as Milan, ATM upgraded Line 1 (the “Red Line”) with URBALIS™, Alstom’s radio based CBTC system. It improved the headway, regularity and safety performance, while significantly increasing the transport capacity of the metro line. The signalling was upgraded by applying Alstom’s mixed operation migration strategy—conceived specifically for ATM’s needs. As a global solution provider who also builds and maintains train fleets, Alstom has the best expertise to manage the complexity of revamping a 26.8 km metro line with a train fleet spanning 4o year old trains to recent metro vehicles, in less than 5 years’ time. Today Line 1 carries more than 500,000 passengers per weekday.
