City States:

• A city-state is a political (government) unit that was made up of people from the town or city.

• Why did Greece have to create city states?

Greece had to have city-states because of its geography. The archipelago and the mountains made it hard for the Greeks to stay united, so they were basically forced to

create city-states. Two major city-states that emerged in Greece were Sparta and Athens.

Athens

• Athens is known for having the first democracy in the world. • A democracy is a form of government in which people

can vote. • Athens had a direct democracy, which means that all

citizens (adult males born in Athens) were able to vote on laws. • Unlike Sparta, which focused mainly on war, Athens

focused heavily on culture and is known for its philosophers (Socrates, Aristotle, Plato) and writers (such as Homer).

Sparta

• A military society where men spent almost all of their lives training for warfare. • People in Sparta had very little freedom.

Peloponnesian War

• There was a war between Athens and Sparta called the Peloponnesian War. This war lasted for 30 years until Sparta won.

Alexander the Great: • Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia, which is the

area above Greece. He wanted to bring all of the Greek city-states under control, and that is exactly what he did! He conquered most of the Mediterranean world.

• Since he conquered most of the ancient world many cities were named after him. In addition, he spread the Greek culture throughout his empire. What is this called?

Hellenistic Culture

• He spread the Greek language, education and traditions. Even the architecture is Greek. This made it very easy to travel and trade throughout the empire.

• Under his rule an new way of life emerged. This is called the Hellenistic Culture, which is a blend of Greek, Persian (Iran), Egyptian, and Indian influence. PIGE

• Even after he died and his kingdom was divided up amongst his top leaders the culture still thrived.
