AsThoughtarchitecture from concept to built form
Our main goal is to describe the design process, the architectural solutions and the detailing choices of a built work in a chronological order. The dream – that is also the ambition – is to tune at the best the structure of this on-line manual and to spread around its template in order to amplify the power of collecting and publishing in a such huge way that in a few years we could arrive at the largest open source and most browsed utility for architectural students not only in Europe.

“Designing public spaces is very difficult.”- said architect Paolo Mestrineron on the project of the En-
trance to Sant Eufemia in Brescia. It was the first time he participated, with his office, on a competition
given by the municipality of Brescia , where the main goal was to find an office with enough experience
in working on public spaces. The whole project was born out of the context, the only thing that he and
his team had to be careful of was the budget. The 140 × 27 m2 of public space, which extends in east
/ west, is integrated between the sacral object, the archeological site and on the city road. There is no
real centrality, just a axis that was created by the stone wall bench that is dividing the public and more
intimate park space of the church. The concept of the space was to connect the public street side, and
tne park side of the church. The gradation was made by different ground elevations, putting the park on
a higher level. Also the gradation was made by the materials, putting the natural materials in the park
and artificial ones on the street side. The wall benche acts like a trashold between these 2 spheres,
connecting them with 3 passages, northern made of wooden Acacia flooring; diagonal, Remembrance
Avenue, made of granite; and the southern ground one that acts like a hidden passage. While sitting
on the stone wall bench the perspectives on both sides of the wall changes. The upper horizon on the
street side gives the whole view of the surrounding, looking on the park side ground level becomes
the level of the horizon, making the viewer part of the nature. The street side contains concrete wall in
corten metal. The rustiness of the corten resembles the soil of the hill in the background of the area, and
shows a sense of time and changes. The walls create barriers to the parking place, bus stop and the
road, partially isolating the pedestrian side and the park. The walls are perforated with proportional cuts
that make framed connections to the business of the street. On the street side are corten benches that
are sheded during the hotter days, unlike the wall benches. In the park is a tree lane where are five stone
benches integrate among them. There is also an old stone which was dug up during the realization. At
the south end of the space is a water well pipe placed in the wall, the same wall changes its height along
the perimeter as it goes along the perpendicular street and ends around the outdoor altar. The important
issue of water within the public space is detected under the cortain walls, where is a grid disposal that
symbols the dynamic of the water.
