The2020-2021schoolyearhasbegun,althoughwithoutthecheerfulpresenceofstudentsandcolleaguesfillingtheclassroomsandstudiosofUniversityHall.Althoughthisyearhasproventobeextremelychallengingandweremainphysicallyseparated,theArtDepartmentfacultyandstaffaredeterminedtomoveforwardwitharangeofinterestingremotecourses,onlineexhibitions,andZoomlecturesfromvisitingartists(detailedthroughoutthisnewsletter).

Aswelookahead,wereflectonlastyear’saccomplishments,withourstellarfacultysharingtheirartworkandscholarshipinexhibitions,presentations,andpublications.ChristopherSchadeexhibitedaseriesofpaintingsinasoloshowattheBostonDesignCenter;WenhuaShi’slatestshortfilmswerescreenedatovertwentynationalandinternationalfilmfestivals;andZachHornhadasoloexhibitionofhisworkattheAmerican

LaborMuseum.MargaretHart’sseriesSituatedBecomingswasfeaturedinasoloexhibitionatBoston’sKingstonGallery.CatMazza’sartworkElectroknitDymaxionwasincludedinanexhibitionattheBowdoinCollegeMuseumofArt;andduringthesummer,shealsocreatedPandemicViews.Thearthistorianshavebeenespeciallyproductivewith

LorenzoBuonannopublishinganessayonRenaissanceVenetiansculptureinthevolumeTheArtofSculptureinFifteenth-CenturyItalyandJohnA.TysonpublishinganessayintheexhibitioncatalogueHansHaacke:AllConnected.Twoseniorfacultymembers

completedmajorbookprojects.SarahKellerpublishedAnxiousCinephilia:PleasureandPerilattheMovies(ColumbiaUniversityPress),whichexaminesanxietyinrelationtothecinema.AndDavidArefordpublishedStrictBeauty:SolLeWittPrints(YaleUniversityPress),

thefirstcomprehensiveexplorationofSolLeWitt’sprintmakingpractice.

Intermsofspecialfacultyaccomplishments,I’mhappytospotlightVictoriaWestonandMargaretHart,bothofwhomwerepromotedtotherankoffullprofessorthisyear.Congratulations!

Finally,wecelebratethestudentrecipientsoftheannualdepartmentalawards.Thisyear,boththeBookPrizeforhighestGPAandtheRuthButlerTravelScholarshipweresharedbytwostudents:AJSolomonandSatomiNishimiya.AJwillbetravelingtoIsraelandItalytoconductresearchonthearchitectureandaestheticsofseveralsynagoguesdatingfromc.100BCto2002.AndSatomiwillstudytraditionalwoodblockprintingtechniquesinJapan.

DavidS.ArefordAfterseveralyearsofresearchandwriting,DavidAreford’sexhibitioncatalogueStrictBeauty:SolLeWittPrintsisbeingpublishedbyYaleUniversityPressinSeptember2020.ThisisthefirstbooktoofferacomprehensiveexaminationoftheAmericanconceptualartist’sprintmakingpractice.Duetothecoronaviruspandemic,therelatedexhibitionwillnowopenattheNewBritainMuseumofAmericanArtinfallof2021andthenattheWilliamsCollegeMuseumofArtinspringof2022.

ProfessorArefordhasalsocompletedaneditedbookonLeWitt’sart–nowtitledLocatingSolLeWitt–consistingofessaysbyeightcontributors,includingdepartmentcolleagueJohnTysonandUMassLowellProfessorKirsten

Thispastyear,ProfessorArefordalsopublishedanessay,“ChristChildCreator,”inQuidestsacramentum?VisualRepresentationofSacredMysteriesinEarlyModernEurope,1400-1700,editedbyWalterMelion,ElizabethCarsonPastan,andLeePalmerWandel.Theessayexploresseveralfifteenth-centurywoodcutsintermsoftheso-calledProlepticPassion,thethemeoftheChildofSorrows,andthesubtlewaysinwhichtheimagescollapsetime.

LorenzoBuonannoThispastyear,LorenzoBuonannopublishedanessay“TullioLombardo,AntonioRizzo,andSculpturalAudacityinRenaissanceVenice,”intheeditedvolumeTheArtofSculptureinFifteenth-CenturyItaly(ed.AmyBlochandDanielZolli,Cambridge,2020),andhadanotheressayonthecraftguildsofVeniceacceptedforpublicationinthejournalSource:NotesintheHistoryofArt.Healsocompletedadraftofhisbookmanuscript,ThePerformanceofSculptureinRenaissanceVenice,undercontractwithRoutledgePress.LastNovemberhewasaguestonWGBH’sLunchHourLiveprogramdiscussingthecontinuedimpactofandfascinationwithLeonardodaVinci.BeginningthisfallhewillbeginservingasChairoftheCatherineFrisoneScottCenterforItalianCulturalStudiesatUMassBoston.

MargaretHartProfessorMargaretHartcontinuestocreatecollageworksinformedbygender,technologyandsciencefiction.ShewillexhibitsomeofthesenewworksatKingstonGalleryinBostoninOctober.Herpreviousbodyofwork,SituatedBecomings,wasfeaturedinanexhibitionattheKingstonGalleryinOctober2019.TheseworkswillbeexhibitedinBerlin,Germany,in2021.HeranimatedvideoPoly-morphosishasbeenincludedinseveralfilmandvideofestivals,includingtheRevolutionsPerMinuteFestival,theLAShortsInternationalFilmFestivalandtheTransart(NotSo)ShortFest.IntheFallsemester,ProfessorHartwillbeteachingART293:Photography1andART393:PhotographyWorkshopandintheSpring,ART293:Photography1andART481:StudioCapstone.

SarahKellerhasrecentlycompletedtwobookprojects.Thefirst,entitledAnxiousCinephilia:PleasureandPerilattheMovies,waspublishedbyColumbiaUniversityPressinApril2020.Itfocusesoninstancesofanxietyinrelationtothecinema,particularlyinthewaysspectatorshaveengagedwithmovingimagesandfindthemselvesinthralltothem.Thesecond,BarbaraHammer:PushingOutoftheFrame,willbepublishedinWinter/Spring2021byWayneStateUniversityPressfortheirQueerScreensBookSeries.Keller’sbookisthefirsttosurveyHammer’sfifty-yearcareerasapioneeringqueerexperimentalfilmandvisualartist.

ZachHorncontinuestopursuevariousprojectsindrawing,painting,andmixedmedia.Thispastacademicyear,hisworkwasfeaturedinasoloexhibitionattheAmericanLaborMuseum,NJ,inaseconditerationofUnitedWeBargain,DividedWeBeg,Zach’songoingworkinsupportoforganizedlabor.HealsoparticipatedingroupshowsatDelMarCollege,TX,MonmouthUniversity,NJ,KentStateUniversity,OH,andattheArtComplexMuseum,MA.Zach’sworkwasincludedinthesurveyofcontemporaryDorchesterartistshereatUMassBoston,curatedbySamToabe.In2020,ZachwasafinalistandgrantrecipientfromtheMassachusettsCulturalCouncilinDrawing.Zachiscurrentlyworkingonasoloexhibition

KevinDaceycontinuesasArtist-in-ResidenceattheRedwoodAthenaeuminNewport,RI.ThisFallhehasashow,“LookingGlass:ImagesforSelfReflection,”thatwillbeopeningonSeptember1,2020,attheRedwood.Theshowisthemostrecentinstallationofthreeyearsofrelatedworkingraphicarts,photography,anddrawing.

LastyearErikLevinefocusedonseveralmovingimageprojectsinvariousstagesofproduction.OutofPlay,avideopiecethatwasfilmedfrom2014-2018andsubsequentlyeditedthrough2020,withtwoSpecialWeaponsandTactics(SWAT)teamsfromRochesterandMonroeCounty,NewYork,isnearlycomplete.Also,TheGuiltySleep,apieceLevinefilmedasherodeshotgunwiththeovernightshiftsoftheRochesterPoliceDepartment,iscurrentlybeingedited.And,hespentamonthfilminganotherworkintheMonroeCountyJail,alsoinRochester,withtheendresultbeinganupcomingsingle-channelvideo.ProfessorLevineattendedtheRobertRauschenbergFoundationResidencyinCaptivaIslandthispastNovember-Decemberandfilmedanadditionalupcomingwork,yettobetitled,atTweenWatersResort,anhistoricalresortlocatedonCaptivaIsland.

ElizabethMarrancontinuesmakingdrawings,collage,printsandpaintings.Lastwinter,shetraveledtoLjubljana,SloveniaforagroupexhibitionattheGalerieDrunzinawheresheexhibitedaseriesofeightintaglioprintstitled,Similar,andAlongThoseLines.ShepresentedanartisttalkattheCatholicInstituteofBusinessandLawtoadiverseaudienceofartists,journalists,andeducatorsandwasoneofthreeartistsselectedtoparticipateinapaneldiscussiononthecreativeartsinhighereducationandonfreedomofexpression,atopicleadbytheHonorableKlemenJaklicfortheCourtofSloveniaandConstitutionalscholar.

Inthefallof2019andwinterof2020,ProfessorMarranworkedonintaglioprintportfoliosfromhertimeatCrownPointPresstheprevioussummer.Sincethepandemicandtheclosingofcampus,shehasreorientedher

InAugust2020,ProfessorCatMazzacreatedPandemicViews,aSpecialProjectoftheinauguralartfairAREACODEthathighlightsartsinNewEngland.PandemicViewsinvitesparticipantstocross-stitchlandscapescapturedduringthepandemic.Mazzadigitallydesignsthepatternsfortheneedleworkers,andaftertheyarestitched,compilesthemintoalimitededitionzineandinanongoingwebbasedformat.PandemicViewsisinspiredbyMazza'sresearchintocraftpracticesduringdaysofisolationandquarantineforTuberculosis

Korea,whichhavelongbeenrelegatedtotheshadowsofChinaandJapan.

Americas,”whichhewasinvitedtopresentattheAmericanArtofthe60sConferenceatTexasA&M.Tyson’sessays,“TheWashingtonRenaissance”intheRoutledgeCompaniontoAfricanAmericanArtHistoryand“BeyondSystemsAesthetics:Politics,Performance,andPara-Sites”intheNewMuseum’sHansHaacke:AllConnected,werepublishedinlate2019.Indeed,histhinkingabouttheworkofHaackeisongoing,asheisworkingonabookfocusedontheartist’soutputinthe1960sand70s.InApril2021,hewillbeorganizingtheVisualCultureConsortium’sannualUndergraduateArtHistorySymposium.

Thisonlineexhibitionwillpresentartworksthatfocusontheimportanceofhumanconnection,care,andaffectioninthetimeofCOVID-19.Wehavelosttouchwithoneanotherduringthistimewhenphysicaldistancingisnecessarytomitigatethecurrentpublichealthcrisis.PlatonicIntimacieswilllookatidealsofphysicalconnection,familiarity,andcollectivecorporealitythroughcontemporaryart.

ThroughacallforartbyNewEngland-basedundergraduatestudentartists,thisexhibitionaimstouniteagenerationofartistsinanexpansive

virtualrealm.Wewillgatherworksbystudentsfromacrosstheregion,whoseartshowsskillincraftandconcept,aswellashostsocialmediaforumstoconnectparticipants.

MOHAMADHAFEZJanuary–May2021

ThisexhibitionwillbethefirstsoloshowinBostonbytheacclaimedSyrian-Americanartist&architect.RespondingtotheatrocitiesoftheSyriancivilwar,Hafez’srecentworkcapturesthemagnitudeofthedevastationandexposesthefragilityofhumanlife.Incontrasttothewar’sviolence,hisartimbuesasubtlehopefulnessthroughitsdeliberateincorporationofversesfromtheHolyQuran,streetart,andsignsofresistancethroughtheadaptationofcultureanddailylife.
