SUNFLOWER VASE

Designer: Harry AllenMaterial: StonewareDimensions: 10 x 4 x 9 inches

“Sunflower Vase” distills what Oscar Wilde called a “gaudy and leonine flower” into its fundamental essence. Sampled from an existing sunflower, the stoneware vase takes on a fluidity and refinement, becoming the perfect receptacle for your favorite flower.

TARGET

KEY TARGET

Designer: BowerMaterial: Beech Wood and Rare Earth Magnet Dimensions: 8.5 x 8.5 x .75 inches

“Key Target,” reminiscent of Jasper Johns’ mid-century paintings, is an iconic pop-art statement. With the addition of several strong unseen magnets, “Key Target” becomes a place to store easy-to-misplace metal items such as keys. Simply toss the item toward the Beech wood target and it affixes immediately. Mundane daily routines turn into playful ones. The surprising functionality elicits an emotional response, heightened whenever hitting the bulls’ eye. Included with “Key Target” is a branded key ring.

PLYWOOD PLAYING CARDS

Designer: Donald CoreyMaterial: Birch PlywoodDimensions: 6.25 x 1.5 x 4 inches (in box)

Inspired by its use in Mid Century design and with a loving wink to the work of Ray and Charles Eames, the choice of mater ia l – birch plywood – provides Corey’s cards stiffness, smoothness and a rich patina. The interlocking slots allow the user to both build and play games with the deck. “Plywood Playing Cards” are designed for competitive gaming and imaginative free play.

MINIM PLAYING CARDS

Designer: Joe DucetMaterial: Sustainably harvested cardstock and vegetable-based inksDimensions: 3.5 x 2.5 x.75 inches (in box)

“Minim” is a deck of regulation playing cards that considers how much “design” you can take away while still maintaining a playable deck. Simple geometric symbols are reductive versions of hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades. While it is necessary to mark the backs of regulation cards, we’ve done so with minimal diagonal lines instead of the typical ornamental graphics.

REALITY ROLLER STOP

Designer: Harry AllenMaterial: Resin and marbleDimensions: 11 X 10.5 X 4 inches

This iconic roller skate functions as a bookend, door stop, or 1970’s fetish object. Now available in grey and orchid chrome.

REALITY PICKUP

Designer: Harry AllenMaterial: Resin and marbleDimensions: 12 x 6 x 5 inches

Harry Allen loves trucks. His immaculately restored 1964 Willys Jeep was recently featured in the New York Times, but it was his fond memories of playing in the dirt that lead him to the idea of “Pickup”. The beauty of any pickup truck is its utilitarian aesthetic - four strong wheels and the capacity to haul cargo. Harry had function on his mind as he cast a toy truck and turned it into a catch-all bowl. As with all REALITY products, it is the material transformation that completes the idea. “Pickup” is functional art for the home. Now available in grey and purple chrome.

FAUNA POUCH

Designer: Ross MenuezMaterial: CottonDimensions: Pouches range in size from 6 to 7 inches. (Owl, English Bulldog, Pug, Tabby, Kitten, Chihuahua)

Ross Menuez - New York City-based artist, fabricator, experimenter, and founder of Salvor Projects – is a longtime friend and collaborator of Areaware President Noel Wiggins. In 2004, Wiggins tapped Menuez to be the company’s first Artistic Director. Since that time, Menuez has contributed several collections to Areaware’s portfolio.

His Fauna collection began with adaptations of imagery from early-era photography found in a long-forgotten British zoological archive, including portraits of wild animals captured on film for the first time. Menuez believed these strong and beautiful portrayals should be brought to life rather than hidden from view. He has since created new images to represent a wider range of animalia.

BLOCKITECTURE: SERIES 1 - BRUTALISM

Designer: James PauliusMaterial: New Zealand PineDimensions: Blocks range in size from 1.5 to 3.25 inches

Art meets science in this set of ten hand-painted hexagonal beech wood blocks that nest together into countless configurations. When recent graduate James Paulius designed “Blockitecture” while still a student at Rochester Institute of Technology, he had the angular geometries of Brutalist buildings in mind, specifically the revolutionary urban housing concept Habitat 67 in Montreal. Paulius sets out to create a timeless toy that challenges the user’s creativity and understanding of physical laws. Awarded first place in the RIT metaproject 03 design.
