Plant Architecture
Now is the architecture to feel the breath on the neck. The pace of development of techniqueand technology have really taken a troubled flight a suffering state for the designer of each building
in which scroll progress in the shortest time ever. The length of building becomes for him interminable, as it is in fact prevented, because of introducing
innovations that will be gradually presented to his studio and his imagination.Thearchitecture of beauty comes to us from a recent past in which architects freely chose forms
and casually erected bold structures of cement and steel with big walls of glass, without consideringthe problem of conserving energy, venturing beyond the premonitions and warnings that have beensetting the limits on development for a number of decades now. A sort ofpalace-home, rather thana utility-home, the built shell has remained rigid with respect to the utilities provided, as if technical
installations had yet to be invented.Very little attention has been paid to energy vectors, to the flows that travel through inhabited areas
in all directions delivering comfort, communication and services. Having designed the shellof the building, the architects left it to the creativity of the plant engineers to find a place to install
systems, distribution networks and terminals. Buildings are now surrounded by dozens of technicalinstallations, and no-one is surprised if the client asks that more be added even after construction
has been completed. But when a building is renovated, it finally becomes clear that technical installations of all kinds ought
to have been treated as separate entities from the rigid body of the building they serve, separable, removable, replaceable, free to grow larger or even to disappear.
The dignity of the technical installationThe heterogeneous set of technical installations in a building has grown in size steadily over the pastcentury, and is now very large in proportion to the walls themselves, as demonstrated by the portion
of the total cost of a building now represented by the cost of the functional parts: technical plants,

elevators, window and door frames. Despite this there is very littlemediated planning, a formof teamwork in which the architect, the structural engineer and the plant engineer collaborate rightfrom the start instead of following the traditional procedure of completing the buildings outer shellin unfinished form and then asking the plant engineer to do his work, limited by spatial constraints
which compromise quality. Unified planning gets all the people involved in design together to producethe three essences of quality, without which no edifice is worthy of praise: utility or commodity;
durability; and beauty, as we may read in Andrea Palladios First book of architecture.Five hundred years later we find ourselves needing to apply these concepts to todays machine
for living. Yet it is precisely the technical installations that have conquered a decisive partof the intrinsic value of the work as a whole for themselves, not only in terms of cost but in terms
of comfort and the joys of living in the broadest sense of the term.If this is not done, it is the buildings users who will suffer from the effects of this lack of planning,
and the building will be incapable of hosting innovations, with structural components and outercladding destined to survive for decades or even centuries, while the technical installations
will doubtless have a shorter lifespan. It follows that, at least on a symbolic level, plants should be builtto be removed and replaced.
The mediated projectThree professionals, whether they be individuals or professional groups, will begin the dialogueby agreeing on some basic choices such as those regarding the relationship between the work
of architecture and the environment, use of solar energy and nocturnal irradiation, the overall security

of the building and plants, proper use of energy and limitation of environmental impact, to go onfinally to the play of volumes and the rational organisation of space and technical installations.
Three requirements: functionals, strutctural and aesthetic. The project will evolve and develop, in termsof the aspects most closely involving the plant engineer, by conceptually separating the key parts
characterising each type of plant: the centres of productionof each service, substations and connections to sources or primary grids, internal distribution,
delivery terminals.
TerminalsThe first issue to be addressed, which prevails over the others because of its direct relationship withhuman beings, involves the terminals: light sources, climate-controlled air outlets, water faucets, fire
hydrants. Considerations to be addressed include location in the building and the manner of deliveryof the service, its efficiency, its functionality over time, the feasibility of performing maintenance,
environmental impact and aesthetics. For example, if we are considering fire safety systems, we will first plan fire prevention
in an interdisciplinary manner before even considering fire-fighting.If on the other hand we are discussing climate control systems, we will determine the temperature
of the areas served, the rate of flow and speed of the air, the hygrometric conditions of the new air letinto the building, noise levels and intermittency of functioning in relation to structural issues,
accessibility, etc. Each terminal must meet all the conditions established, complying with a set
of pheno-mena that affect peoples quality of life: this is the compendium of the plant engineersmission. Scaling and technical features must not be subjected to any predetermined constraints,
and objects shall not be positioned on the basis of the availability of space but rather on the basisof their impact on their surroundings.
Plants and substationThe second aspect to be considered in plant engineering is spaces and locations to house the surfacesfor capturing solar energy and the plants and substations where energy or the energy carrier supplied
by urban grids or by the sun is transformed into the services required. Forms and sources of energyare rapidly changing, with a new one being added every decade (wood, coal, dense oil, diesel oil,
natural gas, natural resources...). The same is true of primary cooling: well water, water taken directlyfrom the aqueduct, cooling towers, dissipators. In the meantime, the building retains its rigid external
configuration despite the metamorphoses underway inside it: valuable the option of replacing any system.Premises for technical plants must be accessible and large enough, with connections to the general

internal and external layout, capable of meeting the needs of the sequence of operations includingeverything from design to construction and system operation. Increasing use is being made of terrace
roofs to house parts of plants which originate or end up outside, permitting easy accessfor maintenance or inspection. The construction plan must include these technical premises right
from the start, as stated in law 10/1991, resolving the specific issues involved in housing equipmentsuch as air treatment units, meters, cooling units, heat pumps, boilers.
Rooftop installation optimises accessibility, rescales the problem of the stack and reduces the risk of firein the heating plant, which will not affect stairways or fire escapes. An explosion in a rooftop heating
plant would cause only negligible damage to the building, while such an event in a basementinstallation could affect the buildings weight-bearing structures.
ConnectionsThe third consideration is the grids. From the plants these travel to the utility terminals, requiring cable
ducts and vertical technical openings, minimising branching-off. In the most prestigious buildings hundreds of examples come to mind, such as the ONU building in New York the many distribution
grids for air conditioning, fire-fighting, heating, etc. are left in view; thus mediated design is freed fromcategorical impositions and no longer insists on hiding technical installations: sometimes it even makesthem into an aesthetically pleasing feature, which also makes it easy to work on old or sick buildings,
dismantling old pipes and rebuilding or cleaning them without having to take apart or knock downany of the building's structural parts.
The plants on the roof involve less risk for users. In case of outbreaks, fires and natural gas fumes the escape routes remain free
and not compromised by events. The effect is very different when the eventgrows near the foundation and base of the stairs

In buildings that have just been finished there is often some confusion as to where theoutlets of technical installations reach the outside and connect with delivery points
of urban networks, or where to position outdoor intakes and outlets.
Pipes penetrate the buildings cladding on all sides and travel through its layoutvia improvised routes, forced to follow inconvenient paths upstairs,
such as around the rigid three-dimensional block of the stairwell.Continuing with our example of rooftop technical installations, we might imaginemanifolds at the top with descending columns providing services to various floors
in the building, all outside the main body of the building. Distribution from the topdown has been demonstrated to be more effective.
In the buildings vertical section, we might propose rising plants intercepted at the base, operable by the control staff in case of emergency without interruption of privacy or of
all services. This could be done with any kind of installation, keeping all the pipeson the outside wherever possible, without getting in the way inside the building,
especially in stairwells and elevator shafts. At this point we might experiment with application of solutions derived from the block
system used in North American cities, where blocks are separated by longitudinalavenues and have alleyways cutting across them to satisfy the requirements
of convenience and safety. We might redesign the fabric of our cities keeping in mind the services to be supplied: it is still
the road grid that performs a multitude of functions as a container not only for traffic but for gridsconveying energy carriers and for collection of wastes, conveyed either through a grid or by truck.

Putting the plants and the building back togetherThe building is a container combining inhabited and functional volumes, each designed as a separatecell. From the point of view of plant engineering, each cell, abutting the outside to receive light energy
directly and use all the services provided by the technical installations, contains its own terminals. It also contains a link to the distribution network and all the specific installations required by the
terminals, but it does not contain any other part pertaining to other volumesor modules in the building or to the installations in general.
Above the roof are prefabricated boxes, like containers, used to house heatingunits, air treatment units, thermal or hot water substations, centralised electrical
and electronic equipment, and terminals for exhaling and expelling fumes
and vapours. Each of these boxes is designed to perform a specific separateservice, and can be replaced or periodically sent off for maintenance
or regeneration of the buildings technical installations. On the outside are networks for connection with boxes, installed horizontally
and in view above the roof, as well as vertically behind the buildings outer shell, inserted in prefabricates equipped to carry fluids from the city grids to the service
boxes and from there to the final terminals where they are used. The concept of standard is still an abstraction in the general urban design
or specifically on the single building, but no one can not ignore it referring to details. The available resources are really good and can solve many problems
that accompany the placement of every plant in building. It wont be technology that stops the progress described here:
we have the technology to do it!
