Design To Order - Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum
Axis has a history of supporting interesting and innovative
architectural projects. In a recent project for Zaha Hadid
Architects, Axis integrated five separate circuits of museum grade
track into its Beam3 linear lighting system for the Eli and Edythe
Broad Museum at Michigan State University. The Beam3 was used to
accentuate the irregular angles and directional pleats of the
structure, communicating the “topographic and circulatory
characteristics” of the museum’s architectural context. (Rendering

Codevelopment - Valparaiso University, Donald V. Fites Engineering
Innovation Center, Valparaiso, IN
The architectural layout of the Donald V. Fites Engineering
Innovation Center required long runs of suspended luminaires in
concentric arcs. Our design team worked with the architect and
lighting designer to create an articulated connection between 4’
sections of Beam4 pendant that allowed finite adjustment and ease
of installation. The resulting installation produces a dramatic
effect and integrates well into the broad curved spaces of the
innovation center.

Design To Order - Astral Media
The architect for Astral Media’s new corporate headquarters in
Montreal chose Twig cylindrical because it fit well into the
ultra-modern scheme of the office layout. To fit with the
architect’s vision of defining corridors with large, rectangular
pendants, Axis developed a round corner. This corner accentuates
the cylindrical shape of Twig and contributes to the fun, modern
look of the circulation spaces.

OPTIMAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY
We implement the latest and most worthwhile practices including LED
technology, integrated controls and advanced optics.
14
OPTIMAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Making strides in product sustainability gives us an edge in
delivering architectural lighting... your way.
15www.axislighting.com
Achieving a low number of watts per square foot is essential to
meet power density requirements. Because lighting
represents nearly 25% of energy use in commercial buildings*,
luminaire performance and lighting
concepts can account for a good portion of the energy reduction
effort.
Axis offers a wide range of fluorescent systems with efficiencies
up to 94% that are
suited to the low power density requirements of sustainable
lighting projects. In addition, OptimaLED™ technology delivers a
maximum number of lumens for each watt consumed, up to 84 lm/W for
the Dia LED luminaire.
Axis LED and fluorescent solutions coupled with dimming and
integrated controls also help you
reach energy objectives and score LEED® points in a variety of
ways, while ensuring you maintain all
the lighting design flexibility you need to integrate luminaires in
the architectural environment.
To keep you a step ahead with products meeting tomorrow’s stricter
energy requirements, we are constantly sourcing new energy-saving
lighting methods and we remain up to date on energy roadmaps laid
out by ASHRAE, IES, LEED and regional building codes.
The perfect mix of elegance and energy efficiency In addition to
delivering superior illuminance, Axis luminaires incorporate optics
that contribute to lower power densities and optimize footcandle
levels. To achieve this, our designers play with the delicate
balance of aesthetics and performance.
In some cases, we use high-reflectance white reflectors to produce
a smoother effect, as with the Dia family. In other cases, as with
wall wash luminaires, we boost efficiency by selecting a specular
optics. As a result, Axis offers a variety of luminaires featuring
visually appealing batwing and asymmetric downlighting
distributions. Different shieldings, such as the VL Optic, louvers
and satin lens, are also used to increase comfort, minimize glare
and eliminate the lamp image.

Buildings, US Department of Energy, August 2010.
SUSTAINABILITY
VL Optic™ technology helps optimize Axis fluorescent systems
This advanced technology adds efficiency and visual comfort to
fluorescent designs, enhancing both energy and human performance.
Instead of scattering light, the VL Optic uses precise, miniature
prisms to direct light away from glare zones. The tight-radius
conical prisms of the VL Optic ensure very high light transmission
(92%) and cut-off greater than 60º. This softens the lamp image and
eliminates high angle glare, improving visual comfort without
sacrificing luminaire efficiency. VL Optic is available with
several Axis luminaires, including Cubic, Dia, Duo, LT, Plano, Ray,
Slim, Soleil, Twig and Wave (look for the turquoise "VL"
symbol).

OPTIMAL ENERGY EFFICIENCY
LED TECHNOLOGY
There is LED… LED luminaires produce light more cost-effectively
over the life of the system than conventional sources for several
reasons.
An LED emits light in a single direction while conventional sources
emit light in all directions, resulting in light loss and therefore
wasted energy.
Compared to a conventional source, an LED source is more efficient
at converting watts into lumens. More lumens per watt, when
combined with the proper light distribution, mean that fewer
luminaires are needed in a given area to achieve desired light
levels.
While initial project costs may sometimes be higher than for
conventional lighting solutions, Axis LED systems provide
substantial operation and maintenance savings that result in a
lower total cost of ownership. With their long life, LED luminaires
eliminate the need for multiple and increasingly costly relampings.
They also reduce energy costs considerably in comparison to
conventional luminaires.
LED lighting concepts that deliver proper light levels for a given
task will generate lower power densities than most conventional
lighting solutions, thereby offering an easier way to meet energy
codes and guidelines, including ASHRAE 90.1, Title 24 and New York
City Building Code, and accumulate LEED® points.
Additional benefits include a reduced carbon footprint and the
increased goodwill associated with a greener, more responsible
corporate image.
18
…and there is OptimaLEDTM
To develop OptimaLED, Axis selected state-of-the-art LED boards,
drivers and optics from the world’s leading suppliers. LED boards
come in a variety of lengths enabling Axis to continue providing
all the design freedom needed to meet architectural
requirements.
19www.axislighting.com
Adding Value with OptimaLEDTM
OptimaLED mid-flux technology offers several advantages over
high-brightness LED systems. These benefits help lower the total
cost of ownership of architectural lighting projects.
Competitive initial costs
OptimaLED uses a more cost-effective technology to produce the same
luminaire efficacy, and therefore achieve the same light levels and
power density targets for less.
More energy savings Because the LEDs are driven at a lower current,
they use less wattage - as little as 6.7w/foot for 600 nominal
lumens with the Beam6 LED - than high-brightness LEDs, resulting in
a lower utility bill.
Lighter, less bulky luminaires suitable for shallow plenums
Less heat is generated by OptimaLED, enabling the housing to act as
a heat spreader, which increases the life of the system, and system
reduce the height of the luminaire.
Install and forget Avoid increasing fluorescent lamp costs and
relamping labor expenses. Axis LED solutions deliver a system life
of at least 50,000 hours (L70)*, which amounts at 12 hours per day,
365 days per year, for 11 years and 5 months.
Control-ready luminaires
Dimmable drivers can be selected at a lower cost with LED than with
fluorescent ballasts. In addition to reducing energy expenses,
dimming increases LED system life. In fact, the LED is the only
light source that delivers more lumens per watt when dimmed.
Light levels In many luminaires, Axis can provide different light
outputs. This means greater design freedom for task tuning and
lower power densities. For example, you can operate the Beam6 using
6.7W/ft at 600 lumens in the general office or 13.5W/ft at 1100
lumens over the escalator lobby.
* At least 70% of initial lumen output maintained for 50,000 hours
at 250C ambient temperature according to IESNA TM-21
standards.
Peace of Mind LED Warranty
OptimaLED is a trusted technological solution using components from
the world’s leading suppliers of LEDs, boards, optics and drivers.
Axis LED products offer superior reliability, as all photometry
tests are done according to LM-79 and LM-80 testing standards. Axis
stands behind all its LED luminaires, which translates into one of
the best guarantees in the industry, namely 5 years on the
assembly, materials, LED board and driver.
20
Integrated Controls
Integrated controls are sensors built into Axis luminaires that
react to the environment surrounding the luminaire and control the
luminaires’ light output. Axis integrates four types of sensors
into its luminaires.
Daylight Harvesting Sensors (DS) measure the ambient light in an
environment. When lamps are dimmed the process is known as Daylight
Harvesting, and predefined light levels are maintained at any given
time of day. Alternatively, photocells can be used to switch off
lamps if a certain light level is achieved in a process known as
Daylight Switching.
Occupancy Sensors (OS) use either Passive Infrared (PIR),
ultrasonic or microwave technologies to detect motion in an
environment. If occupancy is not detected, lights are either dimmed
or turned off after a period of time.
Daylight Sensors and Occupancy Sensors (DS + OS) The use of two
separate sensors allow placement of the DS and the OS at
appropriate locations on the luminaire.
Combination Daylight and Occupancy Sensors (DOS) are sensors that
both measure light levels and detect occupancy. The DOS sensor is
an ideal choice when the luminaire is a standard format.

Linear Systems
Linear Systems
How far do you want to go? There is no limit to what we can do for
you with Linear Systems… Using Beam and Ray luminaires, Axis has
helped lighting professionals build lines of light over 100 feet
long.
Linear Systems owe much of their versatility to incredibly diverse
mounting options. Continuous rows can be recessed in ceilings and
walls for a more discreet look or they can add a touch of ceiling
detail in the form of pendant or surface models. In addition, the
broad range of reflectors and aperture widths ensures Axis has a
luminaire solution for your design. In the Beam family, LED
versions are also available.
Linear Systems let you specify luminaire configurations that match
the precise requirements of your architecturally integrated linear
lighting concepts. Featuring superior design flexibility and
luminaire aesthetics, the Beam and Ray families are ideally suited
for offices, conference rooms, museums and a wide variety of other
modern building spaces.
35www.axislighting.com
Bending light without cutting corners Designers can draw lines of
light at will by creating continuously lit runs all the way through
corners, adding intensity and purpose to their linear designs. Most
Beam luminaires can be fitted with multidirectional illuminated and
unilluminated corners. These corner modules are ideal for
prolonging continuous rows of illumination and for creating unique
linear layouts.
In addition to offering standard 90° corner modules, Axis can also
build special corner sections with custom angles for unconventional
interiors. LED corner modules, also available, allow an even
greater degree of design flexibility.
36
37www.axislighting.com
Unlit Corners These corners are simple, independent modules that
join with straight runs of Beam. They are ideally suited to make
arrangements such as squares and rectangles.
Illuminated Corners More complex, these corners are fully lit. Each
illuminated corner is integrated into the straight segment’s
housing. The corner is mitered, allowing a seamless line of
light.
OWLC - Ceiling to Wall 90° Corner An outside illuminated corner
that runs across the ceiling then up a bulkhead.
LC - Ceiling to Ceiling 90° Corner This is fully illuminated 90°
corner remains in the same plane, for example, the ceiling or the
wall.
WLC - Wall to Ceiling 90° Corner This lit corner is designed to run
up the wall, then across the ceiling. It is also known as an inside
illuminated corner.
Linear Systems
Visual continuity without dark spots
To eliminate socket shadows and create continuously illuminated
luminaires, Axis overlaps the ends of fluorescent lamps using a
technique called staggered lamping. This feature applies to all
Linear Systems. Four different overlapping bracket lengths (3.5”,
4”, 4.5” and 5”), along with 3-foot and 4-foot T5, T5HO and T8
lamps, are used to match almost any row length requirements with
optimal results.
There are two lamp staggering options to choose from: a 1-lamp and
a 2-lamp stagger. Two-lamp staggering (always by 4”) is only
available with Beam4, Beam6, Ray4, Ray6 and Ray8.
Staggered lamping ensures continuous illumination minimizing lamp
image, no matter the length of the run.
End-to-end lighting performance
To build very long runs, Axis has developed different joining
methods for Linear Systems. While joiner characteristics depend on
luminaire type and lighting requirements, special care has been
taken to optimize the performance, robustness and aesthetics of
each joiner option. Factors such as the width of the product, the
suspension or mounting style selected and the presence of staggered
lamping have an impact on the construction of each joiner
module.

F frosted S satin lens
C clear
Lenses - Several Linear systems feature clear, satin and frosted
lens.
Satin lenses provide maximum glare reduction and lens uniformity,
making them ideal complements for staggered lamping applications.
The satin version provides maximum glare reduction and lens
uniformity (approx. 68% transmissive), and is used mainly for
fluorescent applications.
The frosted lens attenuates the lamp image using a high-efficiency
design (approx. 85% transmissive).
SB white solid baffles PL specular parabolic louvers
Shielding - Parabolic louvers and white baffles provide high
cut-off angles, while maintaining very high light
transmission.
A asymmetric
Asymmetric - The asymmetric reflector optic is designed to send
light to one side of the luminaire. This optic can be used to
highlight features in a space or reduce glare on one side of the
luminaire.
WW wall wash
Wall Wash - The function of wall-washing optics is to evenly
illuminate a wall or other vertical surface on one side of the
luminaire. All of the light exiting the luminaire is directed to
the wall side. Applications include illuminating wall-mounted
signage and artwork, or simply to brighten up the perimeter walls
of a room. An optional satin lens is available to soften the
illumination and eliminate lamp image reflected on glossy vertical
surfaces.
42
VL vl optic
VL Optic™ Used with all Ray high-efficiency luminaires, the VL
Optic diffuses a soft radiating light that fills a space without
glare or harsh shadows. Unlike typical diffusers that scatter
light, the VL Optic features precise, miniature prisms that direct
light away from glare zones, with very high (92%) light
transmission. Designed to mute the lamp image and eliminate hot
spots, the VL Optic also helps you meet current lighting power
density allowances established by ASHRAE and Title 24. VL Optic is
available with several Axis luminaires (see page 17 for more
information).
Flush or Regressed?
Regressed lenses are available on Ray high efficiency luminaires,
as well as with Beam florescent recessed models. All Ray and Beam
luminaires offers flush lens as well. The flush lens position is
ideal for situations where the designer wants a minimum amount of
detail in order to have the focus not be on the luminaire itself.
The regressed lens position has a distinctive angled profile giving
the luminaire a three dimensional, volumetric aesthetic. The
regressed lens position allows designers to break up a monotonous
ceiling plane when used with a recessed luminaire, and gives
surface mounted and pendant luminaires an added element of visual
interest.
Mounting options Linear Systems are available in pendant, surface,
wall, recessed and recessed wall versions. Luminaires are
compatible with a wide range of ceiling materials, grid systems and
installation scenarios, providing superior mounting versatility for
most applications.

Built-in design opportunities Grid Luminaries help create a
pleasant, soft and uniformly illuminated indoor environment by
eliminating shadows, increasing visual comfort and fostering
productivity.
Combining aesthetics with performance, they provide a great deal of
flexibility in developing lighting designs that add flair to the
ceiling plane. Sleek designs and a non- intrusive appearance ensure
architecturally appealing ceiling continuity.
With its variety of styles and full range of options, Grid
Luminaires integrate well with architectural spaces featuring
drywall, T-bar and tegular ceiling systems. A wide range of sizes
are available, including 1’x4’, 2’x4’, 2’x2’ and 1’x1’ (Day in
1’x2’, as well).
Grid luminaires come with a choice of efficient ballasts and lamp
configurations, including linear T5, T5HO, and T8, as well as
various compact fluorescent lamps. The Dia is also available in an
LED version.
Many Grid Luminaires achieve high efficiencies ideal for
high-ceiling applications. At the same time, many models are
suitable for energy-efficient projects in compliance with Title 24,
NSYERDA and ASHRAE 90.1 requirements, and can help meet today’s and
tomorrow’s sustainable design goals.
Grid Luminaires
An appealing mix of profile designs
Dia, Duo, Plano & Wave - Lighting professionals can choose from
these four elegant and distinct center optic silhouettes to enhance
the ceiling and complement any interior design.
Day - The Day comes with a center optical element featuring a
curved or flat profile, and each form is available with a satin
lens or baffle. The baffle option includes a frosted lens below the
baffle, creating a unique look while facilitating
maintenance.
Tek - The Tek lens profile is offered in both a curved and
rectilinear design. Both lens styles offer a choice of satin or
frosted opal lens.
Optical performance options
VL Optic™ - Paired with most Grid luminaries, the VL Optic diffuses
a soft radiating light that fills a space without glare or harsh
shadows. Unlike typical diffusers that scatter light, the VL Optic
features precise, miniature prisms that direct light away from
glare zones, with very high (92%) light transmission. Designed to
mute the lamp image and eliminate hot spots, the VL Optic also
helps you meet or exceed current lighting power density allowances
established by ASHRAE and Title 24. (See page 17 for more
information).
Lenses - The optional satin lens on Dia, Duo and Plano provides low
glare and lens uniformity. The Wave’s includes a translucent
frosted acrylic overlay, evenly illuminates vertical surfaces while
shielding the light source from view.

Easy Installation and Maintenance
This product line helps lower installation and maintenance costs
with time saving features. Grid Luminaires incorporate elements
such as a hinged center optic component and ballast covers, which
provide direct access to the lamp chamber while remaining captive
to the luminaire. With no exposed fasteners or hardware, changing
lamps begins by simply opening the door.
Mounting options enhance design flexibility
Highly versatile, Grid Luminaires install in all T-bar ceiling
types and in drywall, and most models can be surface mounted. The
low profile housing is ideally suited to shallow plenum
applications. Many products feature a door frame that matches the
ceiling runner and tile. In addition, several luminaires
incorporate air return capabilities.
The perfect fit with functional ceiling systems
Tek6 and Tek12 models offer optional infill panels for technical
channel systems including Armstrong TechZone™ and USG Logix™.
Accessory panels accommodate features such as air return, speakers,
sprinklers and MR16 lamps. These modules add useful functions while
completing illuminated rows, producing a consistent linear look
along the ceiling.

Comfortable brightness, energy efficiency and flexible options come
together in Dia’s slender design.
Whether in runs or checkerboard patterns, the Dia creates a clean
ceiling line and a distinctive, architectural aesthetic that
integrates well into contemporary spaces.
Using the VL OpticTM, the Dia provides soft, uniform illumination
for superior visual comfort. Luminaires are available in different
dimensions and mounting options, with air return capabilities.
Other design features, such as a hinged center optic component and
ballast covers, contribute to easy and time-saving maintenance. The
low-profile design (only 3.875” deep) is well suited to shallow
plenums.
With efficiencies up to 85%, the Dia delivers ample illumination
while remaining well under Title 24, New York City Building Code
and ASHRAE 90.1 lighting power allowances. Integrated Controls
options enable Dia systems to reduce energy consumption further
still.
