Introduction

Self-intermittent catheterization (SIC) involves using a catheter to drain urine from your bladder (the organ that stores urine) via the urethra (the tube thatempties from the bladder). This product is designed for single use and should be disposed of appropriately after the procedure. Self-catheterization should only be carried out under medical advice and only in accordance with instructionsprovided. With care and practice, you will find that self-catheterization shouldbecome easy to perform.

The bladder stores liquid waste products (urine) of the body. Urine should beexpelled on a regular basis throughout the day to keep the body healthy. Failure to empty the bladder completely can cause problems with kidney function. Thiscan be due to infection and reflux of urine (urine can back up into the kidneys).

Whatever the reason for catheterizing, be assured that your healthcare professionalbelieves it will make a difference to your health status and quality of life.

This booklet is designed as a guide to supplement the information and care givenby your healthcare professional. It is not designed to replace it.

Urinary System

Urine is produced by the kidneys, which filter out the waste products of your body. This liquid waste is passed to the bladder, via two tubes, called ureters. When the bladder becomes full, a signal is sent to the brain to tell the urethralsphincter muscle to relax and the bladder to contract. This causes the urine to flow down the urethra and out of the body.

Your healthcare professional feels it would be best to carry out self-intermittentcatheterization (SIC) to drain urine from your bladder. Maintaining your bladderfunction by SIC will contribute to your health.
