CourseDescription:AdvancedPlacementWorldHistory:Modern(orWHAP),isacoursedesignedtoengagestudentstoinvestigatesignificantevents,individuals,developments,andprocessesfrom1200CEtothepresent.CourseGoals:

• Demonstrateunderstandingofmanycultures,timeperiodsandtrendsfrom1200CEtothepresent

• Writewell-supportedessaysonhistoricaltopicswithclarityandprecision

• Analyzebothprimaryandsecondarydocumentsfrommultipleperspectivesanddrawconclusionsbasedonevidence

• PrepareandtaketheWorldHistoryAPexaminMayforpossiblefuturecollegecreditCourseExpectationsforStudents:ThesuccessfulWHAPstudent:

• readsassignedmaterialspriortodiscussioninclassandtakenotesasneeded.• participatesactivelyinclassbyaskingquestions,suggestingtheories,workingenthusiasticallywith

REGIONS:TheWHAPglobeisdividedintogeographicregions,toassiststudentsinovercomingtheEurocentrismofmostWorldHistorycourses.Europeanhistorywillcomprisenomorethan20%ofourcontent.StudywillfocussignificantlyonAfrica,AsiaandLatinAmerica.Studentswillalsoreceiveahardcopyofthemaponday1.

HISTORICALREASONINGSKILLS:Factualcontentisnotjustmeanttobememorized,buttobeconsidereda

toolthroughwhichstudentscanpracticethethinkingskillsutilizedbyprofessionalhistorians.Theseskillsinclude:

1.Analyzingandinterpretingprimaryandsecondarysources. 2.Historicalargumentationandtheuseofevidence,usingbothtextandnon-textsources. 3.Comparison,contextualization,andevaluationsofrelativesignificance. 4.Chronologicalreasoning,includingcausationandpatternsofcontinuityandchange.
