PA60: The infinite stage
pneumatically driven hydraulic pump
Power Team, one of the leading SPX Hydraulic Technologies product
brands, has long been the market leader in high pressure hydraulic
pumps due to durability, ease of use and life cycle cost benefits.
SPX Bolting Systems (the specialized bolting branch of SPX Hydraulic
Technologies) introduces Infinite Stage Pump Technology – the
pump technology that delivers in excess of 200 % speed
improvement – making jobs faster and easier.
The SPX PA60 Infinite Stage Pump increases productivity on the job
by providing unrivalled oil flow twice as high on average the speed of
typical 2-stage pumps. Fitted with an air pressure regulator, an air
filter and a lubrificator, it is well protected against poor air quality, the
SPX PA60 delivers a fast oil delivery at low pressure, and enables
economical repair thanks to its serviceable air motor.
The features included in the SPX PA60 in order to excel within the
market and to answer operator’s needs are:
- The possibility of continuous duty in an operating environment from -25°C to +50°C - Portability is facilitated due to a weight of 35.8 kg excluding oil - A 5 meter long pendant control switch which is easily removable. - High speed air control - Quiet operation - Rugged construction for durability in tough environments - Fewer parts for lower service costs - Comply with ATEX II 2 GDc T4
Safety, one of the major concerns of SPX Bolting Systems is always the priority, and a contributing feature to
this end is the internal relief valve in the manifold set at around 700 Bar which protects both the circuit
components and operator from any possible pressure intensification that may occur if the couplers should be
incorrectly connected.
The SPX Bolting Systems Infinite Stage Pump technology is bringing the next generation to the market.

TWHC, the Torque Wrench High Cycle
The TWHC is SPX Bolting Systems’ additional line of Square Drive
Torque Wrenches. It is designed to reduce costs by improving the
cycle life of torque wrenches by 2-3 times existing technology.
The TWHC has been tested in excess of 30,000 cycles - 2 to 3 times
standard torque wrenches and designed to operate in the rigors of the
outdoor environment where they are typically used.
The TWHC is highly-resistant to corrosion in harsh environments,
both on and offshore due to top grade materials and a nickel coated
finish. Its compact nose radius allows the tool to fit in tighter, hard-to-
reach spaces.
The ease of use is enhanced thanks to its light weight, optional carry handle and multi-position,
high-flow swivel manifold which allows the operator to manoeuvre the hoses into almost any
position required.
Some wrench manufacturers use a short stroke (generally less than 25 degrees), lightweight
aluminium-based body and a locking-pawl mechanism in order to try and make the wrench size
lighter. Although the lighter wrench sounds good, this combination has a negative impact when
turning the bolt/nut as it only provides a small amount of rotation. SPX Bolting Systems’ TWHC
wrenches have a solid famous steel body, long stroke piston and fine-tooth ratchet combination
which results in a 30-31 degree nut rotation reached during tests.
Keeping safety in mind, SPX Bolting Systems encloses the drive mechanism in the TWHC by
means of a rubber-compound cover which does not present a sharp-edged protrusion commonly
seen on metal covers of other wrenches after damage from normal wear and tear. Some other
torque wrenches have open and exposed drive mechanisms, which not only allow ingress of debris
but also put the operator at risk of trapping their fingers. Where the movement occurs, the TWHC
nose is consequently fully enclosed.

A new range of hydraulic tensioners with a performance that’s unique to the market
The highly-innovative SRT range from SPX: spring-return hydraulic bolt tensioners designed to provide optimal operational performance and safety
It is of utmost importance for site technicians to accurately and safely apply the correct load
requirement on each bolt when tightening a joint. If the application has been unequally loaded then
the resulting condition could be unreliable, giving rise to a weakened structure or leakage if the
application is pressure containment. The possible failure of the ‘joint’ may not reveal itself for some
time, but may do so under ‘loaded’ conditions when its performance and reliability are most critical
and demanding.
The innovative features of the SRT range of "Topside" hydraulic bolt tensioners offer improved
performance and reliability in meeting these requirements. They reduce operator fatigue, improve
productivity whilst at the same time enhancing safety.
The automatic piston return yields a significant amount of saved time
through reducing de-pressurization and tool re-set time (around 40% higher
productivity). Work cycle is therefore reduced, operation and tool indexing is
more productive (over manual tensioners) and operators are less fatigued.
The SRT range of tensioners offers an unparalleled guarantee of both
reliability and durability.
SRT hydraulic bolt tensioners are designed to have all their components
protected from environmental debris and conditions; operation and
maintenance costs are consequently considerably reduced over the life of
the product:
- their integrated misalignment compensator allows a stud deviation of up to 5 degrees. This
avoids situations which unfortunately are not un-common and which have serious
consequences on the accuracy and tool life expectancy.
- a piston stroke limit indicator allows the user to gauge the tensioning progress across the set
of tools so as to keep their synchronized operation. Should a tool be taken to the end of its
stroke, there is a locking function which prevents the piston from being over-extended, which
would lead to the seal failing and possible tool damage. Besides the savings which it leads
to, this feature also protects the operator from any high-pressure oil discharge.
July 2012
SRT hydraulic bolt tensioners are therefore superior by design, truly productive and safe tools, field
proven and the choice of technicians or contractors who rely on quality, reliability, productivity and
safety for their core business as well as their own reputation in the market.
The SRT has 7 standard models (0-7) in the range covering ¾ - 4 inch (M20-100), with 4 tools
covering the popular 1 to 3.1/2 inches (M24-M90). Tools have a 10mm maximum piston stroke
(‘0’model - 8mm) and operating at a maximum pressure of 21,750psi / 1,500 Bar. Larger sized or
special application tensioners are available on request.
SST hydraulic tensioners from SPX - the subsea version The Subsea version of the new SPX hydraulic tensioners, the SST range, is designed to resist the most extreme working conditions of use which guarantees the product's durability and performance. The tools are coated with a high-quality nickel plating which enables them to resist any salt-water environment. Very compact and easy to use, SST subsea hydraulic bolt tensioners enable the tools to be used simply by placing the body over the stud/nut and sliding the ‘open’ ‘quick reaction nut’ along the thread and onto the tool. A simple squeeze click engages it securely onto the thread which is locked on when pressurizing the tool; removal is in reverse, which simplifies operations and minimizes the divers' work time. Like the Topside versions, SST hydraulic tensioners are equipped with an integrated misalignment compensator allowing a stud deviation of up to 5 degrees and a piston stroke limit indicator, allowing for controlled and synchronous operation.
Moreover, the piston has a 30mm stroke in order to close/load the flange in a single operation, reducing the possibility of the overstroke of individual tools. For the operator's complete safety the design of the SST hydraulic tensioners prevent piston ejection and avoids any oil release to the environment. The different models in the range offer a capacity ranging from ¾ to 3 ½ inches (M20-M90), operating with a maximum pressure of 21,750psi/1,500 Bar. SST underwater hydraulic tensioners are used with QRN quick-release reaction nuts from SPX Bolting Systems.

Innovation: ENS, the triple-bladed
hydraulic nut splitter with ultimate cutting performance
If a nut is jammed, corroded or damaged, it is more often than not, impossible to unscrew it and the ultimate solution is to use a nut splitter to free the bolt by splitting through the nut. In the energy sectors and other heavy-duty industries the nuts that are used are high-tensile strength and therefore necessitate nut splitters that have high-strength ability. ENS hydraulic nut splitter is specially designed for BS1560, ANSI B16.5, API 6A & API 17D flanges. It easily and quickly cracks problematic nuts of up to 130mm across the flats. The high-strength forged head is interchangeable and is screwed onto the hydraulic cylinder offering the flexibility to cut a variety of nut sizes. The heavy duty, three-sided, triangular blade design is an important feature as it enables the operator to save time since he has only to turn the blade 120° to have a new cutting surface. It also provides the assurance of being able to complete the job at hand with minimal interruption. The ENS hydraulic nut splitter is also equipped with a dial-in feature which enables the blade travel to be controlled and therefore avoid costly damage to the stud. ENS is also available in a sub-sea version in which case a double-acting cylinder is utilised to ensure there is no water ingress and to speed up the blade retraction process. In April 2010, SPX Hydraulic Technologies, member of the Industrial Products and Services division of SPX Corporation (NYSE: SPW), broadened its range of high-performance bolting products with the acquisition of the British company Torque Tension Systems Ltd. (TTS), a global supplier of hydraulic bolting products. These products efficiently meet the needs of global energy infrastructure markets, in particular the sectors of nuclear power, wind, and oil and gas.
