A Word From Our President
Sweet Sixteen is off to a great start for our chapter. As of February 29th, 2016
Chi Zeta Omega Chapter (CZO) has 153 members. We have grown much since our humble beginning in 2002 when we were the first African-American organization in
Plano, Texas and the 125th chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. Since then CZO has been a leader in community service in Collin County and
surrounding communities. Service to all mankind is our goal, and we have through the years provided thousands of dollars in scholarships through our non-profit foundation
Pearls of Service, Inc, mentored young women to become success contributors to society, and donated uncountable volunteer hours in various events. 2016 is no time
to rest. Our chapter is just as busy serving as years past. We have many community events coming up. We invite the community to join us for our programming events.

2014-2018 International ProgramsLaunching New Dimensions of Service

Target I. Educational Enrichment ASCEND – Members will engage in the sorority’s signature youth enrichment program, ASCEND with efforts designed to motivate, engage and assist high school students in reaching their maximum potential.One Million Backpacks - Members will donate and distribute one million backpacks and related school supplies to students over the four year period.
Think HBCU – Support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) will be a priority as Alpha Kappa Alpha launches a national campaign to highlight HBCUs and their contribution to the sorority and society.
Target II. Health Promotion The Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver Support- Program will generate awareness and support for Alzheimer’s programming and research
Stroke and Heart Disease Awareness – Alpha Kappa Alpha will launch a major stroke prevention awareness campaign
with emphasis on hypertension management, diet and exercise.
Mental Health- will be highlighted as members bring attention to the mental illness among diverse populations with low utilization
of mental health services.
Target III. Family Strengthening Community based Childhood Hunger Initiatives- will be launched in partnership with local agencies, food banks and community pantries.The Family Seasonal Wraps- Program will be offered as the sorority sponsors a major initiative to collect and donate hats, gloves, socks, scarves, coats, sweaters and other seasonal wraps for families in need.Fiscal Responsibility- Programs will be initiated as members work with partner organizations and families to help increase their understanding of budgeting, basic financial planning and benefits of home ownership.
Target IV. Environmental Ownership The AKA 1908 Playground Project- will be launched to ensure children have safe and inviting places to play. Sorority members
will restore and renew 1,908 existing community and school playgrounds with its Restore, Refresh and Renew Project.
Through its Acts of Green- Program members will promote environmental sustainability by encouraging recycling, litter prevention and waste management through daily green efforts in local communities.
Target V. Global Impact
Alpha Kappa Alpha members will work in partnership with the UNA-USA (United Nations Association) to expand
understanding of the UN, its mission and focus.
Through its renewed Africare partnership, Alpha Kappa Alpha Chapters will implement youth hunger initiatives on the continent
of Africa.
MLK, Jr Weekend – A Day of Service
The tradition continues! Chi Zeta Omega Chapter was busy at work during the Martin Luther King, Jr Holiday weekend. The weekend’s activities started with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Power Breakfast at Collin College. Pearls & Ivy members served as hostesses while CZO members interacted with members of the community to discuss the theme “Together We Are” and how it impacts the lives of all members in the community.MLK Day was a”Day on, and Not a Day off”. Members started early in preparation to participate in the Plano Community Unity Walk. Chi Zeta Omega Chapter won the most participants in the walk for the second year running.Immediately after the Unity Walk, members of the chapter, Pearls & Ivy members and ASCEND students volunteered at The Samaritan Inn in McKinney. The large group decided to divide and conquer the many tasks including sorting clothes for the resale shop, cleaning apartments for future residents, stocking the food pantry, and cleaning the facility grounds.

Target - Family Strengthen For a special group of CZO members, February 7th, Super Bowl Sunday wasn’t just about football. Members prepared and served pizza, wings, chips, dips, veggies, cookies and cake and served as perfect hostesses for a Super Bowl party for approximately seventy families at the Ronald McDonald House Dallas.
Ronald McDonald House of Dallas provides a temporary home for families of sick or injured children.When a child is sick, healing comes first. A family should not have to worry about where the next meal is coming from, or where they will lay their heads at night—Ronald McDonald House takes care of that and we helped.
The Family Strengthening Committee led by Member Shlondra Amacker plans to prepare more “meals that heals” and make Ronald McDonald House an ongoing service project.

Pink Goes Red for Heart Health
Target – Health Promotion
More women die of heart disease than all forms of cancer combined. Currently, some eight million women in the U.S. are living with heart disease; yet, only two in six American women believe that heart disease is their greatest health threat.Friday, February 5th Chi Zeta Omega Chapter, in partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, CollinCounty Alumnae Chapter, took the charge to educate and inform women on the perils of heart disease while raising funds to donate to the American Heart Association.The successful night ended with every person in attendance walking away with information on ways to identify and prevent heart disease, a great cardio work-out from the dancing and mingling. Most important the event raised $750 to donate to the American Heart Association.

“A Love Jones” for AfricareTarget – Global Impact 96 Degrees West Winery, a local
establishment in Wylie, Texas, was the site of a pre-Valentine’s Day evening of wine and rhyme with a purpose.
Chapter members and guests were treated to spoken word and conversation by Ms. Gloria “Free Me” Johnson while sampling a variety of Texas wines.
The Global Impact committee hosted this unique event to raise funds for our National partnership with Africare. A portion of the proceeds from registration will be donated to the organization. At time of publication the event raised over $400.00.
Africare’s purpose is to generate awareness regarding issues related to education and child hunger in Africa.

Pearls & Ivy Corner
The P&I annual retreat was held on February 19th-21st at the Spring Hill Retreat Center in Richardson, TX.
The young ladies enjoyed activities such as scrapbooking, a cooking lesson, panel discussion on relationships and of course, a dance party.
Pearls & Ivy attended career day at JCPenney and learned about the vast andunique career paths available within theretail industry at JCPenney.
The young ladies met and interacted withseveral leaders at JCPenney including thedynamic CEO, Marvin Ellison. In addition,the young ladies toured the JCPenneyHome Office and museum, television andphotography studios.

Pearlsand Ivy was founded in 2002 toprovide an empowerment program forhigh school girls in the Collin County area.Participants in the program are givenleadership and etiquette training,members also volunteer at variouscommunity events, and the participate invarious workshops.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was established on the campus of Howard University on January 15, 1908. Every year, chapters around the world celebrate the founding of this great sorority.
Sisterly relations play a major part inmaintaining the bonds of the womenwho have joined Alpha Kappa AlphaSorority, Inc.
February Chapter Meeting – Pink Goes Red Chapter PhotoChi Zeta Omega Chapter members wore Red to chapter meeting to raise awareness of heart disease in women.
Chris Zeigler of Richardson/Plano Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. presented on “Guide Right” mentor youth program and he also brought chocolate as part of Valentine’s day .

Pearls of Service, Inc., is a nonprofit charitable organization created by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated,® Chi Zeta Omega Chapter, of Plano, Texas. It is the fundraising arm of the chapter and was created to support educational scholarships and various community service of Chi Zeta Omega Chapter, and other Collin County organizations. Our mission is to raise and distribute funds in support of charitable and educational efforts in Collin County. In addition to providing college scholarships, we support youth development, health, family empowerment, and initiatives focusing on environmental and global concerns.
