Greetings,

I write to you on behalf of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Omega Mu Omega Chapter. The Omega Mu Omega Chapter was chartered September 18, 2016 in the City of Philadelphia. Since that time, we have been committed to the continuing education of high seniors in the city of Philadelphia in their pursuit of a college degree. In accordance with this commitment, we have enclosed information regarding scholarship opportunities that we offer.

We ask that you review this information as soon as you are able so that you may present it to your graduating seniors. The scholarship application period opens March 5 and closes April 30, 2021. We believe this provides ample time for qualifying students to complete and submit the online application.

SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEWAlpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® OmegaMu Omega Chapter is pleased to announce its fifthannual college scholarship awards. Throughout ourhistory, education and youth-focused programinitiatives have been at the forefront of thesorority’s service mission.

Omega Mu Omega Chapter was charteredSeptember 18, 2016 in the City of Philadelphia,serving communities along the river. It is the intentthat this opportunity be made available toAfrican-American/Black students residing in thePhiladelphia County of Pennsylvania, whodemonstrate academic excellence, good citizenshipand community service.

1) The Omega Mu Omega ChapterFreshman Scholarship is a one-time,$1000 award based on scholasticachievement, extracurricular activities,leadership and community service.Applicants are planning to attend anaccredited four-year college or universityduring the fall semester of 2021.

2) The Yvonne Cooper Watson MemorialScholarship is a one-time $1000 awardwhich supports the higher educational goalsof a deserving female student pursuingEducation, Physical Education and/orHealth. The applicant must attend aHistorically Black College/University(HBCU) during the 2021 – 2022 academicyear.

3) The Omega Mu Omega ContinuingStudent Scholarship is a one-timescholarship awarded to a student who hasmatriculated at any metropolitanPhiladelphia college or university and hasdemonstrated financial need. The applicantmust be referred by the Office of StudentAffairs, Dean of Students or their designee.

4) The Norman and Betty WilsonScholarship is a one-time, $500 book awardwhich supports the higher educational goalsof a deserving female or male student withfinancial need. The applicant must attend aHistorically Black College/University(HBCU) or Temple University during the2021 – 2022 academic year.

Eligibility Criteria for the Omega Mu OmegaFreshman, Yvonne Cooper Watson Memorialand Norman and Betty Wilson Scholarships:● The Omega Mu Omega Freshman Scholarship

is open to female or male high school seniors.● The Yvonne Cooper -Watson Memorial

Scholarship is open to female high schoolseniors.

● The Omega Mu Omega Freshman and YvonneCooper Watson Memorial Scholarships requirethe most recent official transcript reflecting aminimum cumulative unweighted overall GPAof 3.0/4.0.

● The Norman and Betty Wilson Scholarship isopen to female or male high school seniors andrequires the most recent official transcriptreflecting a minimum cumulative unweightedoverall GPA of 2.5/4.0.

● All applicant awardees must be accepted by anaccredited 4-year college or university in thesummer or fall following graduation.

● All applicants must be currently enrolled in anaccredited high school in Philadelphia County.

● All applicants must upload two (2) letters ofrecommendation: one (1) from a teacher at theircurrent high school and one (1) from a personwho can speak to the applicant's character.Letters from friends and family members willnot be accepted.

● All applicants must submit an essay in responseto the prompt associated with the scholarship forwhich they are applying. Essay prompts and therequired number of words are on the next page.

● Applicants may choose to submit SAT or ACTtest scores (optional).

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. was founded in 1908 by 16 African American college students. Theseambitious women exhibited excellence by supporting and assisting each other through the rigors of collegewhile pooling their resources of time and talent to be of service to the people around them and to the largerAfrican American community. Describe a time when you demonstrated excellence in accomplishing a goalwhile managing competing priorities.

Yvonne Cooper-Watson was a health and physical education teacher in Connecticut. She was a graduate ofHampton Institute, and was a member of Theta Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.Describe ways that you plan to use your interest and expertise in health, education and/or physical fitness tobetter your community and have a positive impact on the lives of people around you.

The Norman and Betty Wilson ScholarshipPlease submit a 300-400 word essay responding to the following prompt –

Norman and Betty Wilson were hard working, loving parents of modest means. Although financiallychallenging at times, they believed in helping others in the community and were proud to provide a debt-freecollege education for their daughter. Describe how receiving this scholarship will provide financial relief foryou or your parents and help you to achieve your goals.
