Welcome to the first edition of The Times of Fishwicks for 2010. The year seems to be flyingpast and it is unbelievable that we are already in the second quarter of 2010.
From a Fishwicks point of view 2010 started off on a positive note, we have continued to meet ourbudgeted sales figures and are looking forward to seeing an increase in production as we movecloser to June with many of our clients gearing up for promotional and branding activitiessurrounding the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
Have you noticed how many cars there are on the road sporting South African flags or side mirrorcovers and that the wearing of soccer jerseys on a Friday is gaining momentum. With just twomonths to go until the official kick-off, and with the knowledge that South African's are notbanking on a place in the finals for Bafana Bafana, it is nevertheless still good to see suchpatriotism and support for our team and this great country.
While South Africa's economy has started to show signs of recovery the recession took a heavytoll on our economy with some 870 000 people losing their jobs in 2009, households suffering fromfalling incomes and high levels of debt. The domestic economy contracted by an estimated 1.8%in 2009 as a result of decline in consumption spending and weak investment growth.
Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel, speaking from parliament in Cape Town at the endof March stated: “What started as a financial crisis rapidly spread to the real economy and impactedon jobs, real gross domestic product (GDP) fell by 1.8% in 2009 but is expected to start growing to2.3% this year and rising to 3.6% in 2011.” Patel also stated that South Africa's new growth path, thecentral ideas of which are to enhance the labour absorbing capacity of the economy, would focus onmanufacturing, infrastructure development, rural development and agro-processing (transformingproducts originating from agriculture, forestry and fisheries) and the ‘green’ economy (refer to articlebelow “Going Going Green”). This is surely good news for South Africa and South Africans ingeneral as government steps up efforts to fight poverty and unemployment.

Babies AboundTo very proud parents and sister of Saiana, welcome Saskia weighingin at 3.26kgs a beautiful daughter born to Cheryl and Cedrick Reddy.
Edris and Feroza Samed are delighted with the birth of Alfaazweighing in at 2.8kgs.
Sandile Mayeki and Nadine are delighted with the birth of theirdaughter Asizenkosi who weighed in at 3kgs. Sandile, your smilecan't get any wider.
Roland and Joanne Killian who relocated down under, a son Jaydeewho weighed in at 3kgs.
The 2010 Comrades MarathonOn Sunday 30 May will see the running of the Comrades Marathon adownhill race this year. With this in mind, we would like to wish thefollowing Fishwickers well:-Babs Pillay from our Die Cutting department is running his first at thetender age of 61 - go Babs!Alex Powney our Financial Manager is also running his first.Aran Boodhai, Production Co-ordinator is running his eighth and;John McClelland who as he puts it, “will be completing my fifth”.
On the Swimming and Triathlon FrontA huge congratulations to Gail Babich who swam in her 20th Midmarmile earlier this year and subsequently received her double greenbadge. She then went ahead and came first in her age group in theKZN Triathlon Championships also held in February. Well done!

Welcome to our Financial Manager, Alex Powney, who took over the
Fishwicks purse strings on 18 January 2010. Alex comes with a wealth of
financial experience and joins us following his stay with the New
Reclamation Group in Durban.
A big welcome back for Tammy Peenz on her re-appointment to the
Fishwicks Gauteng Sales office on 22 February 2010. We certainly missed
you Tammy.
Loren Botha also joined Fishwicks on a contract basis last year which was
turned into full time employment earlier this year. Welcome Loren we hope
you have many happy years with Fishwicks.

By definition, the green economy is:-

Did you know that we have a wonderfulteam of Fishwicks 'Metropians'? They arethe Johannesburg team who handle theMetro account and very successfully wemight add so from here on out we will referto the team as Metropians.
The Metro account returned to the Fishwicksfolds in December last year and in speaking toShonelle Deolall, who assits Diane Mitchleyto manage the team of Metropians, we askedher how she feels about the account and teamin general and this is what she said.
“The Metro account is not without itschallenges and as I hit the ground runningwith no time to get acquainted, I must takethis opportunity of thanking both HayleySteinberg and Diane Mitchley who arealways there to guide and support me. Thenthe team themselves are a truly WOW DTPteam and so awesome plus they are apleasure to work with. Our Metropian mottois 'we will deliver' it's that simple.”

The year is 1981, the year in which the SA Rugby Union toured NewZealand (still known today as the Springbok Tour) which foundcontroversy and opposition to the tour throughout New Zealand due tothe then apartheid regime. But the tour went ahead following thesigning of the Gleneagles Agreement and the then New ZealandPrime Minister Robert Muldoons public stance on 'no politics in sport'.
It was the year that the Spaceshuttle took its first flight, the wordInternet was first used and MS-DOS was released by Microsoft. TheWinner Takes it All by Abba, Morning Train by Sheena Easton, BetteDavis Eyes by Kim Carnes and 9 to 5 by Dolly Parton were top of thecharts. And yes you guessed it, Des Patterson joined Fishwicks.
We asked Des some questions and this is what he told us:-

Q: Have you always been on the sales side of Fishwicks?A: No, I spent the first six months in production before moving intosales.
Q: Where was Fishwicks based when you joined?A: Melbourne Road, Dalton, Durban

To be recognised as being a good corporate citizen in South Africa,companies are required to ensure that they partake in Corporate SocialInvestment (CSI) programmes.
Fishwicks has for a number of years been printing the Annual Report ofCommunity Chest as part of our CSI programme. In days gone by acompany would normally hand over a cheque and that was that, buttimes have changed and there are a whole host of ways of running a CSIprogramme more effectively. In our case, we use what we have at ourdisposal namely printing capabilities and the technical expertise to printon behalf of the Community Chest.
You may be wondering who the Community Chest are and what do theydo?
The Community Chest of South Africa is a national body focused onrestoring hope and enhancing communities within South Africa. It aimsto provide care wherever possible by touching the lives of the aged, theinfirm and the terminally ill, the physically and mentally challenged andthe many children in our community who are neglected, abandoned,abused and those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Support is alsogiven to alcohol and drug dependency rehabilitation projects, family andmarriage counselling as well as the Hospice Association.
At a recent breakfast function hosted by Community Chest to thank all thecorporate sponsors, John McClelland and Cheryl Tomlinson representedFishwicks Printers and can both be see at the function which was held atthe Durban Country Club on Wednesday 3rd March 2010.

Well in our case, Bryan Nathan and Samad Alli elected to gowith (b) and extended our normal 'print without limits' into adifferent field by producing a recliner!
No, I hear you say, we are print manufacturers not furnituremanufacturers! Ah well we were until Bryan walked in toSamad's office, who just happened to have designed a chair andBryan loved the concept so much he immediately made plansto present to the South African Breweries (SAB) who hadalready decided to launch a campaign for the Black Label brandof beer entitled 'Man's Day Carling'. Yep, the men just couldn'tstand the fact that women have their day on 9 August.
No seriously the nation is gearing up for Man's Day onSaturday, 24 April 2010. This is a day when men can just bemen and celebrate everything that is great about being a realSouth African man. As part of the celebrations, 'Man's Day

Paper Cooler Boxes are Hot! What can be said about the salesmanship, design capabilities,purchasing and the production teams at Fishwicks. WOWwould be the best description. These guys and girls areabsolutely wonderful and especially when they come up withfantastic ideas such as a waterproof table cooler box designedand manufactured for SABS as a promotional table talker forthe Castle Lite brand.
Bryan and Vishal with the assistance of Edris, designed, soldand sourced material and the production team manufactured8 490 units. The material utilised on this job is called'coldpack'. Despite Castle Lite pay-off line on the cooler boxbeing 'step into the extra cold zone' we think that SABS as acustomer stepped right into the hot zone that Fishwicks offers.You go team!!

Welcome to our Financial Manager, Alex Powney, who took over the
Fishwicks purse strings on 18 January 2010. Alex comes with a wealth of
financial experience and joins us following his stay with the New
Reclamation Group in Durban.
A big welcome back for Tammy Peenz on her re-appointment to the
Fishwicks Gauteng Sales office on 22 February 2010. We certainly missed
you Tammy.
Loren Botha also joined Fishwicks on a contract basis last year which was
turned into full time employment earlier this year. Welcome Loren we hope
you have many happy years with Fishwicks.

“Going Going Green”In Julian's message above he made mention of‘green’ economy and it is felt that we need toidentify exactly what is meant by this.
The green economy is an emerging marketplacethat seeks to optimise the synergy among threesets of values namely: environment, social andfinancial. This is most commonly referred to asthe “triple bottom line.”
By definition, the green economy is:-
� The fast growing new economicdevelopment model in contrast to theexisting 'black' economic model based onfossil fuels such as coal, petroleum andnatural gas.
� The green economy is based on aknowledge of our ecological economicsthat aims at addressing theinterdependence of human economies andnatural ecosystems and the adverse impactof human economic activities on climatechange and global warming.
� The green economy includes green energygeneration based on renewable energy tosubstitute for fossil fuels and energyconservation for efficient energy use. Thegreen economy is considered to beable tocreate green jobs, ensure real, sustainableeconomic growth and prevent environmentalpollution, global warming, resourcedepletion and environmental degradation.
