1. URBAN GREENING: Docent-led tour with 3 stops in the downtown area. Flat terrain. Easy walking.

JONES VALLEY URBAN FARMS. These farmers work hard to be both efficient & experimental in their farming practices while establishing a beautiful ecosystem in the heart of the city.

RAILROAD PARK. These 19 acres of green space in the middle of downtown Birmingham are the ideal place to combine the urban vista with a celebration of the industrial & artistic heritage of Birmingham.

GRANDMOTHER'S GARDEN @ SLOSS FURNACES. Volunteers repaired the historic Duncan House & planted the heirloom vegetable & flower garden.

2. BIRMINGHAM BOTANICAL GARDENS. Docent-led walking tour along paved, mostly flat, but some uphill walkways. Enjoy the Gardens’ seasonal highlights plus the Japanese Garden, Southern Living Garden, Conservatory, Rose Garden, Kaul Wildfower & Bog Gardens.

3. ALDRIDGE GARDENS. Docent-led, half-mile walking tour along paved, mostly flat, but some uphill walkways. This sprawling garden is well known for hydrangeas, bird-watching trails & outdoor exhibits.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Dr. James B. McClintock is the Endowed University Professor of Polar and Marine Biology at the University of Alabama Birmingham. His research, funded over the last 25 years by the National Science Foundation, has more recently included studies of the impacts of rapid climate change. He recently returned from his 15 th research

expedition to Antarctica where over the past 20 years he and his research collaborators have become among the world’s authorities on Antarctic marine chemical ecology and drug discovery. Dr. McClintock’s expertise on the ecological impacts of climate change has garnered numerous invited lectures and he writes in the popular literature on this timely topic.

Felder Rushing tends gardens in both Mississippi and England and is a 10 th generation Southern gardener who has hosted NPR’s Gestalt Gardener radio program for the last 15 years. You can also catch Felder as an online Q&A guy for HGTV. In addition to being a newspaper columnist, articles contributor to many national magazines, and author or co-author of 18 gardening books, some of which were national bestsellers, Felder is a longtime board member of the American Horticulture Society, founder of the international Slow Gardening movement, and was named by Southern Living as one of the “25 People Most Likely to Change the South.”

Tom Underwood currently serves as the Executive Director of the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, having assumed that position in February 2017. Tom holds a Bachelor's degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California Polytechnic State University and a Masters in Science Education from the University of Central Florida. Prior to moving to Birmingham, he was the Executive Director of the American Horticultural Society, the nation’s oldest gardening organization. He worked at Walt Disney World Resort for 20 years in various capacities, including Manager of the Horticulture Services Department.

BREAKOUT SESSION PRESENTERS

Lois Trigg Chaplin, a lifelong vegetable and herb gardener, studied horticulture and entomology at the University of Florida. She served as a garden editor at Southern Living Magazine for 13 years and until recently was the Director of Marketing for Bonnie Plants. Lois has been communicating gardening practices in print, web, TV and on stage for many companies and publications. She is well known for two books: A Garden’s Blessings: Refreshment for the Soul, which is the spirit of her conference presentation, and the best -selling Southern Gardener’s Book of Lists.

Roger Clarke, a 2010 master gardener graduate, is self-proclaimed a classic garden "putterer." A lifelong city dweller, he has developed a keen interest in maximizing his garden space.

Robert M. Green, Jr. is a landscape designer and owner of Green Nurseries in Fairhope, AL. In business since 1932, his nursery specializes in camellias and other winter-interest plants. It is a repository for rare and endangered camellia cultivars salvaged from long-abandoned nurseries and gardens. Bobby has introduced 27 camellia hybrids, including 14 Camellia sasanqua hybrids, and has been published in many Southern and national publications. His landscape objectives include garden design that extends our natural surroundings, thereby involving people within the garden, and that takes a minimalist approach, adapting Eastern thought with Gulf Coast plant material.

Randall Haddock, PhD, Field Director for the Cahaba River Society, is an expert on the Cahaba River watershed and its famous lily. Randy has led CRS’s work on the water quality, science, and recreation programs since 1991. He provides policy analysis for growth and development issues and for state water quality permits and policies. He helps locate and abate pollution sources, and works with local governments and developers to improve the design of development to reduce watershed degradation. Randy is one of the South’s notable ecologists and experts on watershed processes and is the chief guide and naturalist on recreational canoe trips down the Cahaba Rand is the chief guide and naturalist on recreational canoe trips down the Cahaba River.

James Horton, Director for the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, has been with the City of Birmingham for over 33 years. His work history includes greenhouse, nursery, garden center, landscape, lawn care and sports field experience and management. He is a member and past president of the Alabama Turfgrass Association. James served on the Governor’s Alabama Water Agencies and Work Group where he held a position on the Water Conservation, Efficiency and Reuse Panel and helped co-author the Green Industry Sub-Panel Position Paper. Throughout his career he has designed, installed and maintained season flower beds, with seasonal color being some of his best work memories.

Bethany O’Rear is a Regional Extension Agent with the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service specializing in commercial and home grounds horticulture. She holds a BS degree in Ornamental Horticulture and a Master of Education Degree in Adult Education with Extension Education Certificate from Auburn University, and is an Alabama Certified Landscape Professional. Bethany’s responsibilities including working with Master Gardener volunteers and other interested parties to plan, implement, and evaluate educational horticultural programs in the region

Hunter McBrayer, a Biology graduate of the University of Alabama, is an Urban Regional Extension Agent for Marshall and DeKalb Counties, specializing in home grounds, gardens and home pests, as well as animal science and forages program areas. Hunter runs the Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs for the Extension Service. He is currently pursuing a M.S. at Alabama A&M University in Plant and Soil Science. He is well known for his grafting expertise. He is a proud member of Agricultural Leaders for Alabama-Class IV, Alabama Young Farmers and the Educational Technology Learning Network.

Dr. Michael Steinkampf is a practicing physician with Alabama Fertility Specialists, which he founded, and was Professor and Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at UAB. He has received 29 research grants and has published extensively in medical literature. Michael has been keeping bees for almost 10 years, has 30 hives located throughout north central Alabama, one of which is a research apiary. He attended the Young Harris Beekeeping Institute, a rigorous training program at the University of Georgia, and is certified as a Master Beekeeper. He is the only Georgia Master Beekeeper to obtain a research grant from the National Honey Board to study changes to hive design to improve honey bee health.

Antonia Viteri holds a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture from UC Berkley, and multiple certifications in Herbal Studies from the California School of Herbal Studies and the Appalachian Center for Natural Health. She is a member of the American Herbalist Guild, a Master Gardener, and a LEED Accredited Landscape Designer. In 2016, Antonia founded Herbal Studio, an interdisciplinary consultancy that provides custom and “out of the ordinary” health services including Herbal Education.
