A.L. FORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This annual scholarship was established in 1995 by Isabel Ford as a memorial for her late husband. A.L.

Ford. A.L. Ford was a communications pioneer in Prince George, serving 48 years with CN Telegraph. From the

arrival of telegraph services to Prince George to the evolving telecommunications services of the 1970's, A.L.

Ford worked in areas that we now call "information technology".

Amount of Each Award: Variable

Eligibility: Open to students who intend to pursue a career in information technology.

Criteria: Demonstrate a high level of academic achievement over the last two years and have demonstrated good

citizenship. Must plan to enroll in post secondary studies leading to a career in telecommunications or other areas

covered under the broad umbrella of information technology. Must plan to pursue their education in a full time

program of two or more academic years in any one of the following:

a) technical training

b) university studies

c) college studies

BEAVERLY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

Eligibility: Open to students who attended Beaverly Elementary School for a minimum of two years.

BET SIDDALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship has been established to honour the memory of Bet Siddall, who worked in School District No. 57

from 1966 to 1988. This award honours Mrs. Siddall for her outstanding contribution to education as teacher and

principal; it recognizes her belief in the importance of education as the means by which each individual might

strive to realize his or her potential.

Eligibility: Open to students who have attended Hart Highlands, Peden Hill or Harwin Elementary Schools for a

minimum of 2 years.

BEV HOSKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This awards was established by family and friends of Bev Hosker. Born in Fort St. John. Bev was a member of the first ever

female RCMP troop. She went on to serve 24 years with the RCMP throughout British Columbia. Bev was in

integral member of the District Parent Advisory Councils in both Quesnel and Prince George, and a tireless advocate for the

rights of students and parents. She was a particularly strong believer in the need to increase the numbers of

young women pursuing studies in math and science. This award will go to someone who embodies Bev's commitment to

community and school and plans to pursue further studies in a mathematics related field.

pursue a career in a mathematics related field (mathematics, finance, science).

BLACKBURN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship has been established in 1994 by the Blackburn family who arrived in the Pineview area in

the 1920's. The Blackburns have always taken an active role in the community where the first log school was built

on their farm land. The award is intended to recognize and provide financial support to a student who attended

Blackburn Junior Secondary School.

Eligibility: Open to students who attended one of these schools for 2 or more years: Blackburn, Giscome,

Pineview, Buckhorn, or Hixon Elementary.

Criteria: Demonstrated academic excellence and a strong involvement in their school and/or community.

BRIJ M. MADHOK, PRINCE GEORGE REGIONAL CORRECTIONAL CENTRE

CRIMINOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP

This award was established in 1988 by the Hutda Lake Camp to provide financial assistance to a graduating

student who plan to pursue post-secondary education in the field of criminology.

Amount of Each Award: Variable

Eligibility: Open to students who plan to enroll in a post-secondary educational institution in the field of criminology.

Criteria: Demonstrated high level of academic achievement. Demonstrated good character as evidenced by

letters of reference.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee.

Special Condition: Dependents of Corrections staff are not disqualified. Letters of reference outlining

character must accompany application.

BRYAN JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Bryan Johnson, a Prince George businessman. He

was a very warm, friendly person with a tremendous zest for life. The purpose of this scholarship is to

acknowledge students who are self-motivated and who pursue excellence in their endeavours. Bryan's

untimely death occurred in an avalanche while skiing on Mount Rider, February 4, 1995. He is sadly missed by his

wife, family and friends.

Sponsored by Nordics Forest Company which manages the ski club's woodlot.

Eligibility: Open to students currently enrolled in any secondary school participating in the District Awards

Program who is a current member in good standing of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and:

a) has been an active member of a Caledonia Nordic Ski Challenge Group for at least their senior years.

or

b) has been an active coach or instructor with the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club for at least their senior years.

or

c) has been an active volunteer with the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club for at least their senior years.

The Chinese Benevolent Society Scholarship was established as a District Award in 1983. It is given

to a student of Chinese descent who is a member of the Chinese Benevolent Association. The student's

school will receive a trophy for that year.

Eligibility: Open to students who attend a school in the City of Prince George, and who are of Chinese

descent or, in the case of members of Canadian Chinese families, have at least one parent of Chinese descent.

COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL OF PRINCE GEORGE LITERARY ARTS SCHOLARSHIP (DS) The

Prince George Community Arts Council established this award in 1990.

The Government of BC will make available to graduating students of School District No. 57, scholarships

each valued at 51,000.00. Successful candidates are selected on demonstrated excellence in fields other than

academic.

Successful candidates each receive a $500.00 Dogwood District/Authority Award cheque. An additional

$500.00 will be paid to each award winner who registers in an approved program of career-oriented studies at

a post-secondary institution.

Eligibility: Open to students currently enrolled in any secondary school in School District No. 57 only (not

SD93 or Cedars Christian School) who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents / landed

immigrants and who fulfill graduation requirements. Criteria: Possess a C- or better average in the Grade 12 year. This award will be available to graduates who

excel in any of the following areas:

Fine Arts (Visual Arts. Dance. Drama. Music)

Applied Skills (Business Education. Technologv Education Information Communication Technology Home

Economics)

Physical Activity (not limited to Physical Education)

Second Languages (including Aboriginal Languages)

death of a child represents the loss of potential. This award has been established to augment the potential of a grade 12

graduate from School District No. 57, who plans to enter either a General Nursing Diploma Program or Bachelor of

Science in Nursing Program.

students who have demonstrated excellence in their knowledge and use of the English language.

whose parents hold an active membership in the Temple Association.

Criteria: Demonstrated high level of academic achievement over the two senior years of secondary

education.

parent membership in the Temple Association must accompany application.

university or college with the intention of subsequently entering a university Faculty of Forestry.

Amount of Each Award: $1000.00

Eligibility: Open to students who are pursuing studies in a science or technology related program at the

University of Northern BC and/or at the College of New Caledonia.

Criteria: Demonstrate high level of academic achievement. Demonstrate innovation and initiative over two

senior years of secondary education. Selection Process: Selected by the District Awards Committee.

Special Condition: This award should not be limited to the highest academic achiever. Letter of reference

explaining innovation and initiative over two senior years of secondary education must accompany

application.

INTEGRIS CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP

Number of Awards: 2

Amount of Each Award: $1000.00 with an opportunity to interview for employment at Integris Credit

Union for the summer months in the year in which the award is received. Eligibility: Open to students who attend school in the City of Prince George. Applicants must be either

members of or are sons or daughters of members of Integris Credit Union. Applicants must intend to pursue

a career in finance, economics, technology or marketing.

Criteria: Demonstrated high level of academic achievement. Demonstrated leadership or involvement in

extracurricular and/or community activities.

JENNIFER HARTLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This award was established by Canadian Forest Products Ltd., North Central Plywoods to honour the

Memory of a co-worker, Jennifer Hartley.

Eligibility: Open to students attending school in the City of Prince George, who are the son or daughter of a

Canfor/Canadian Forest Products Ltd. and/or Canfor Pulp and Paper Limited (CPLP) employees.

JUNE ELIZABETH WADE MYTTING SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship has been established by June Elizabeth Wade Mytting from the proceeds of her published

works, to assist a graduating student from one of College Heights. Duchess Park, Kelly Road, Prince

George,, D.P. Todd Secondary or School District 93 proceeding on to post-secondary education in a

recognized educational institution. The scholarship purpose is to acknowledge students who are self-

motivated and who pursue excellence in their endeavours.

Mrs. Mytting died on July 26, 1986, of cancer. She will be missed by family, friends and fans. The work will

continue in her memory and this award will be enlarged.

KEN LUTTRELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Kiwanis Club of Prince George has established a memorial trust fund to honour the memory of Ken

Luttrell for his outstanding service to the Prince George community. Mr. Luttrell was a 30-year charter

member of the Kiwanis Club of Prince George.

Eligibility: Open to students who are a Knight or son, daughter or grandchild of a member in good standing

of the Knights of Columbus Council 5246 (Prince George). Recipients must attend a post secondary school in

British Columbia.

Special Conditions: Selection of the recipient is subject to the approval of the donor.

Recipients will not be eligible to receive more than one of the Knights of Columbus Council 5246 (Prince

LO ELLIOTT ORTHODONTICS CLOSED SCHOLARSHIP

This Scholarship has been established by Dr. Francine Lo and Dr. Robert Elliott. They are certified

specialists in orthodontics located in Prince George with deep roots in the community.

MIKE REID MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (DS) In 1995 the name of the scholarship was changed from the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club to the Mike Reid Memorial

Scholarship. Mike Reid, a respected and active member of the ski club, died suddenly in 1995 at age 35. He had been a

talented athlete, a positive role model, and a mentor to young athletes at both the local and provincial level. The

scholarship was renamed in his memory.

The Caledonia Nordics Ski Club is a Cross Country Ski Club which has been established in the Prince George area for

over 30 years. It was formerly known as the Hickory Wing Ski Club. This scholarship is intended to assist the Club's

young athletes wishing to continue their post-secondary education.

Eligibility: Open to students currently enrolled in any secondary school in School District No. 57 who is a current

member in good standing of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club and:

a) has been an active member of a Caledonia Nordic Ski Club Race Team for at least their senior years. or

b) has been an active coach or instructor with the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club for at least their senior years. or

c) has been an active volunteer with the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club for at least their senior years.

Criteria: Demonstrated high level of academic achievement.

MULTICULTURAL HERITAGE SOCIETY OF PRINCE GEORGE SCHOLARSHIP (DS)

These are endowed funds held by the Prince George Community Foundation.

THE POZER FAMILY ENDOWMENT FUND The Pozer Family established a new family fund with the Prince George Community Foundation in 2004

with the first award given to a student in June 2006. This award will be given to students who are intending to

pursue a career in music.

This award was established in 2007 by the Prince George and District Music Festival Association

PRINCE GEORGE DISTRICT TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The Prince George District Teachers' Association offers eight awards each year to School District No. 57 students in the

following secondary schools: College Heights, Duchess Park, Kelly Road, Mackenzie, McBride, Prince George. D.P.

Todd and Valemount. These awards are usually made on the basis of one per school registering Grade 12

students, provided that there are qualified candidates. If one or more schools' candidates are deemed ineligible either

through insufficient qualifications or failure to meet the eligibility criteria. then the award assigned to that school will be

A perpetual scholarship was established in 1986 to commemorate the visit to Prince George of their Royal Highnesses, the

Prince and Princess of Wales. These are endowed funds held by the Prince George Community Foundation.

Eligibility: Open to all students.

Criteria: Demonstrate a high record of academic achievement in both Grade I I and Grade 12. Demonstrate

outstanding citizenship as evidenced by their involvement in school and community activities. Demonstrate

involvement /achievement in Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Speech Arts in school or community.

Selection Process: Selected by District Awards Committee

Special Conditions: Preference will be given to those students who provide a minimum of one and not more than

three testimonial letters, record of marks or other support material substantiating each of the three areas of

achievement:

a) citizenship in school and community

b) involvement and achievement in Art, Dance, Drama, Music or Speech Arts

c) academic achievement

Support letters are expected to be very specific to each of the areas of achievement.

The University of Northern British Columbia also agrees to match the S2,500 (tuition waiver) for this award upon the

recipients' enrollment and attendance in any UNBC program.

RALPH SCOTT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Ralph Scott was a well respected member of the Prince George community. He appreciated the value of education but

was also aware of the need for practical knowledge. This award was established in 2000 in his honour.

Eligibility: Open to all students.

Criteria: Demonstrated academic achievement of 73% or greater. Demonstrated strong school service and

leadership. Demonstrated involvement in school sports and/or clubs.

Selection Process: Selected by the District Awards Committee.

Special Conditions: This award recognizes well-rounded deserving students who have demonstrated strong

school service and leadership, maintained an overall average of at least 73% through their Grade I 1 and 12

courses, as well as participated in school athletics and/or clubs. A letter of reference outlining school

participation must accompany application

The College of New Caledonia agrees to match the $1000.00 (tuition waiver) for each of these awards upon the

recipients' enrollment and attendance in any CNC Program at any of the College's campuses. The

University of Northern British Columbia also agrees to match the $1000.00 (tuition waiver) for each of these

awards upon the recipients' enrollment and attendance in any UNBC program.

STEELWORKERS, LOCAL 1-424 SCHOLARSHIP

This award was established in 2000.

daughter of a member, or son or daughter of a retired or deceased member (as per the National Constitution at the

TANJA VOHAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This award was established by family, friends and co-workers to honour the memory of Tanja Vohar. Tanja was

born and raised in Prince George, completing her elementary school years at Pineview Elementary and graduating

from Prince George Secondary School.

Tanja was a kind, gentle person, quick to provide a smile and a helping hand. She was an inspiration to all

who knew her.

This award is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Prince George (downtown) in honour of Wally West, a noted

photographer and a Rotary Club member since 1948.

Eligibility: Open to students who attend school in the City of Prince George. Preference will be given to

students pursuing a career or further study in visual arts. (If no suitable candidate, this will be awarded on the

same terms as a Rotary Club of Prince George Scholarship.)

Criteria: Demonstrated a high level of academic achievement. Demonstrated ability in Visual Arts

preferably in the field of photography.

This financial award is given to any grade 12 student residing within the boundaries of the former Blackburn

Junior Secondary School, to pursue further education at any recognized educational institution (including Trade

School).

BOB HOWAT MEMORIAL BURSARY

This bursary was established in 1996 to honor Bob Howat, a deceased director of the Spruce Credit Union. The

Bob Howat Bursary is offered, on a rotating basis, to students graduating from secondary schools within the

City of Prince George.

however, when two students have equal qualifications for the award, preference will be given to a student

who is a member or a son or daughter of a member of the Spruce Credit Union. This award must be claimed

in September the year following graduation.

memory of Christopher Watt, son of Rob and Bonnie Watt. Christopher's parents have been members of this

community for over 20 years. His father, Rob Watt, has been a teacher at Nukko Lake Elementary School for

over 20 years. Christopher Watt attended Nukko Lake. He was known as a "friend to all" and one who

welcomed new challenges with the belief "one could succeed.

FREDA ERRICSON MEMORIAL NURSING BURSARY This award was established in 2001 by family, and friends to honour the memory of Freda Erricson. Freda was a

dedicated Licensed Practical Nurse and Nursing Unit Clerk at the Prince George Regional Hospital for over 35 years. Her

conscientious and compassionate nature endeared her to the many patients, co-workers, friends and family. It is hoped

that this bursary will be awarded to someone who is determined to put kindness back into the nursing

profession.

GAIRETT MACIVER MEMORIAL BURSARY This award was established in 2007 by family and friends to honor the memory of Gairett Maclver. Gairett will be

remembered for his courage, determination and zest for life. Gairett was a student at D.P. Todd Secondary School where

he graduated in 2006. The purpose of this award is to help another student in the district who is in need, as the

community banded together to help Gairett. This award is designed for a student who has faced considerable

challenges and risen to these challenges in a positive manner. It is intended for a student who wishes to pursue

postsecondary education.

This award, which promotes the Vision. Mission and Principles of the Girl Guides of Canada as expressed in

Policy, Organization and Rules, will be granted to a female student who has resided in Prince George for a

minimum of two years, and is an active youth Member of Girl Guides of Canada in a Prince George District.

This award was established in 1987 to honour the memory of Jack Lunden, an educator in School District No.

57 who contributed much to the education of students, most notably in the area of Special Education. This

award is intended to provide financial assistance to a student graduating from a Special Education Pre-

Employment/Alternate Education/Learning Assistance Program who has successfully completed a work

experience component and who plans to continue his/her education at any post-secondary institute.

JAMES A. FOWLIE MEMORIAL BURSARY

James (Jim) A. Fowlie was easily one of Prince George's most respected and recognized individuals. He was a

founding member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada Prince George Chapter where he supported the

goal to be a leader in finding a cure for MS and enabling local residents affected by MS to enhance their

quality of life. Afflicted himself with MS for 40 years, Mr. Fowlie lived life to the fullest. He was seen

regularly motoring the streets of Prince George in his electric wheelchair with a clever saying pinned to the

back.

Eligibility: Preference will be given to students with Multiple Sclerosis or who have parents with MS.

Recipient must attend a university, college, or vocational school in British Columbia.

JIM McLEOD MEMORIAL BURSARY

This bursary has been established by the Prince George Take the Car Out of CAR/nage Society to honour the

memory of Jim McLeod who was a founding member of the Society. The purpose of this bursary is to

provide financial support to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to Traffic Safety and to the

reduction of automobile-related injuries and fatalities.

KARL ANDERSON FOUNDATION BURSARY

Karl Anderson left Denmark at an early age as a member of the Danish Navy and made his way to Canada, arriving in the

rapidly growing community of South Fort George in 1913. He opened a newsstand opposite the sternwheeler

landing in South Fort George. In 1914 Karl moved his store to a permanent building on George Street in the new town

site of Prince George. Karl was a member of the Rotary Club of Prince George as well as the Supreme Lodge of the

Danish Brotherhood in America. This award is given to male students who intend to pursue a university education.

This award was established in 1999 by the Pinewood Community Society to honour the memory of Naomi

Dyck who worked as a secretary for School District No. 57. Naomi's caring ways and her `never give up"

attitude were an inspiration to all who knew her. She was always there for the students and fellow staff

Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was a very warm, friendly, outgoing person who cared about people. This award is made

available to a graduating student intending to pursue a career in the field of nursing at an approved post-secondary
