What is Lifelong Learning?learning that is pursued throughout life from cradle to
grave.encompasses learning at all ages and subsumes formal,
non-formal and informal learning.
Faure Report (1972):
• Lifelong education as the “master concept for educational policies”
• “… the lifelong concept covers all aspects of education, embracing everything in it; … lifelong education is not an educational system but the principle in which the over-all organization of a system is founded.”
Foundations of Lifelong Education” by R.H. Dave (1976):
• “… formal, non-formal and informal patterns of learning throughout the life cycle of an individual for the conscious and continuous enhancement of the quality of life, his own and that of society.”
• “… it is often difficult to conceptualize lifelong education in its entirety on account of its comprehensiveness and multiple modalities.”
Delors Report (UNESCO, 1996)
Lifelong learning implies the acquisition of knowledge, skills
and values throughout life, a continuous process of learning to
know, to do, to live together and to be (the “four pillars” of
education).
Learning to know
Learning to do
Learning to live together
Learning to be
Why is Lifelong learning needed ?
• Formal education is unable to serve individual needs
• Most people have little time for formal schooling
• Learning for creativity and adaptability to change in an uncertain future
• Learning for continued learning throughout life in a learning society
• Learning to live together in peace and harmony in a globalizing world.
Lifelong learning an integral part of Indian culture Education Commission (1964-66):Education does not end with schooling, but is a
lifelong process. The adult needs an understanding of the rapidly changing world and the growing complexities of society. Even those who had the most sophisticated education must continue to learn; the alternative is obsolescence... Thus viewed the function of adult education in a democracy is to provide every adult citizen an opportunity for education of the type which he wishes and which he should have for his personal enrichment, professional advancement and effective participation in social and political life.
Characteristics of lifelong learning:
Cradle to grave
Can be formal, non-formal & informal
Self-motivated learning
Universal participation
Varying degrees of public & private funding
Dimensions of Lifelong Education
Vertical: from real to digital and virtual learning environments
Horizontal: from schools to work-places, communities, mass media, and other social learning environment.
Longitudinal: from early childhood through adulthood to post-retirement years (lifelong).
Strategies for Lifelong learning
1) To clearly identify national lifelong education policy; 2) To set up an organization responsible for the promotion and coordination of lifelong education at the national and local levels;3) To build an understanding of lifelong education concept and value in terms of provision of lifelong education for society;4) To promote and encourage all sectors of society to take part in providing education;5) To develop diversity of educational approaches with more flexibility, accessibility, quality and standard;
cont……6) To develop sources of learning and networks;7) To develop information sources and IT/ICT, as well as mass communication system;8) To encourage teachers and personnel to participate in provision of education with quality; 9) To improve curricula and contents to be responsive to the needs of various target groups;10) To improve learning processes and procedures suitable for each particular target group; and 11) To measure and evaluate learning through consideration of standard and accreditation among these three forms of education.
