WalterFedy Energy Project Showcase

On June 24, 2015, Oxford County Council unanimously passed a motion
to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050, becoming the first munici-
pality in Ontario to commit to such a target. Patrick Darby will present on
working with Smart Energy Oxford, a coalition of government and indus-
try partners, to help them achieve this goal.
Josh Gibbins will also share innovative techniques he developed for en-
ergy project reporting he calls Reproducible Reporting, a process that
combines narrative with analysis and allows for the quick generation of
report iterations that are never out of date.

meeting at the Burling-ton Holiday Inn, “Walterfedy Energy Pro-ject Showcase.” What you missed at the January meeting: VRM hosted a tour at McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind. Af-ter the tour, we had an
excellent networking dinner meeting at the Uni-versity Club of McMaster. Project Description: The project consists of a 12,000 square foot ad-dition that was constructed to sit atop the exist-ing Psychology Building. VRM was retained as the prime consultant because unlike traditional project delivery models, the owner needed the complex structural design to be completed be-fore engaging an architect. The project required the design team to engineer as lightweight a structure as possible. This proved to be chal-lenging as acoustical theatre designs usually require extensive mass to dampen sound trans-mission. The structure is built on a conventional steel frame and has floating cast-in-place concrete slab floors to isolate sound transmission. To mit-igate sound transfer of mechanical and electri-cal components into the LIVE Lab, all ductwork and electrical components were run in areas outside the theatre space as much as possi-ble. Any penetration into the theatre space re-quired acoustically dampened penetrations through the walls. Quick Facts:
Heating was provided from the existing
McMaster Central Utility Plant through a steam
to water heat exchanger. Chilled water was
used for cooling from the McMaster Central Util-
ity Plant
The project used two air handling units – A
constant volume air handler was dedicated to
the LIVE Lab, the second VAV unit with terminal
reheat served the remaining floor plan. Hydron-
ic perimeter heating was used to address the
envelop heating load
The main ductwork was run in acoustically
lined duct shafts, any penetration required spe-
cific details provided as part of the acoustic con-
sultant’s scope of work. Each penetration was
inspected by the acoustic engineer.
All ductwork serving the LIVE Lab was
acoustically lined and run at a velocity of 700
FPM in main duct runs, with the velocity further
reduced in branch ductwork
Minimal balancing dampers were permitted
in supply ductwork serving the LIVE Lab
A Noise Criteria of below NC-10 was re-
quired in the LIVE Lab / Piano & Equipment
Testing Space and Sound Booth
Supply air to the Live Lab was distributed to
a large plenum and supplied at low level
through custom diffusers. Return ductwork was
supplied at high level

With Rememberance Walter Everett "Pete" WOODS, ASHRAE Life Member, retired, executive with Delhi Industries, died peacefully, in his 91st year, at the Village of Tansley Woods, Burlington, Ontario on Monday, December 26, 2016. Pete was a long-time sup-porter of the Hamilton Chapter.
Enzo Iantorno. It is with deep sadness that I inform the Chapter of the pass-ing of Enzo Iantorno at the end of this past October. Enzo was President of Airex lo-cated in Brampton. Although Enzo was a member of the ASHRAE Toronto
Chapter, Enzo supported our Hamilton Chapter by signing up either 2 or 3 foursomes each year, for the past 12 years (no matter where we held it.) In speaking with his son Robert, they plan to continue to send representation to our tournament. Our condolences are extended to the Iantorno family of the sudden loss of truly an icon in the H.V.A.C Industry. David Rasmussen, C.E.T. Social Committee Chair 2017

Design Competition
The 2017 Student Design Competition focuses on a new single-story with mezzanine office and repair building in the Diego Ramirez Islands in Chile, South America. Each team must register online in order to participate. The first deadline for the 2017 competition is May 4th, 2017. ASHRAE will recognize the outstanding student design projects at the 2018 ASHRAE Winter Meeting to be held in Chicago, IL, January 20-January 24, 2018. For more infor-mation, contact Student Affairs.
