METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Context
The growth of air traffic complicates the management of the surface movements:
· “See and be seen” principle for surveillance & control is a key factor
· Bad meteorological conditions or low visibility (LV): airport stakeholders have little or no knowledge of ground surface traffic
· Emergency situations: surveillance, control and management of vehicles are critical
Risks of collisions & incursions into dangerous & restricted areas (e.g runway)Congestion of airport areas
Identified solutions: A-SMCGS (Advanced Surfaced Movement Guidance and Control Systems) provide accurate positioning and surveillance services, based on surface radars or GNSS solutions (EGNOS/GALILEO)

METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Demonstrate a subset of A-SMGCS applications providing surveillance and conflict detection services to operators and vehicle drivers using EGNOS and wireless technologies.
Assess EGNOS coverage & validate operational use in Casablanca airport.
Show the benefits of using EGNOS aware applications for the monitoring of moving airport assets thanks to the Demonstration.

EGNOS added value : Errors correction & Integrity
SAFE DRIVE provides an integrity risk based on EGNOS signal processing :% of chance to have a precision inferior to 6m.
EGNOS uses the same frequences as GPS satellites
unique receiver and antenna for GPS and EGNOS reception EGNOS enables :
•GPS errors correction for better accuracy
•Integrity risk monitoring

METIS Workshop Benefits of EGNOS in Civil Aviation, Istanbul 18 November 2009
Key enablers & lessons learnt in Casablanca
EGNOS messages processing
•GPS errors correction
•XPL computation EGNOS signal available in Casablanca
RIMS stations monitoring GPS signals and ionospheric propagation in the area
New RIMS station are needed to cover North Africa
Airport map providers and certification EGNOS accuracy is useless if the map is wrong!
Datalink subnets covering all the airport surface UHF is advised (and perhaps WiMax for the future…)
A-SMGCS solution deployment ICAO/Eurocontrol commitment is needed in order to give the rules
