  • Purafil Safeguards the Largest Museum inAfrica and the Middle East

More About the MohamedMahmoud Khalil MuseumPurafil protects the largest collection of fine artsin Africa and the Middle East from environmen-tal pollution in the expansion of the MohamedMahmoud Khalil Museum in Giza, Egypt. Theart collection is worth billions of dollars andrequires constant protection from a pollutedurban atmosphere.

The ProblemGaseous pollution is primarily caused by theburning of automobile fuels. If these pollutantsare drawn indoor through an HVAC system orby natural filtration, museum artifacts can bepermanently damaged.

The main components of automotive exhaustare sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone.Sulfur dioxide combines with moisture to formsulfur acid, which oxidizes metals and deterio-rates organic-based materials. Similarly, nitro-gen dioxide dissolves in water to form nitric acidwhich oxidizes metals and attacks calcareousstone and murals. In the presence of ozone,organic-based materials, such as paints, tex-tiles, animal skins and paints, will discolor andbecome brittle.

Purafil Provides the SolutionKannapell Rodgers Company, the local Purafilrepresentative, installed Purafils gas-phase airfiltration systems in order to achieve the follow-ing objectives:

    1) Stop the degradation of valuable artifacts.2) Enable the museum to bring in temporary,

    traveling exhibits.

    3) Clean the air for museum patrons and personnel.

Purafils systems were designed for retrofit intothe museums thirteen air handling units andtogether filter 360,500 CFM of outside andrecirculation air. And because recirculation airrequires less energy to heat and cool than ven-tilation air, the museum saves on energy costs.Housed within each filtration system are dis-posable modules containing CP Blend media.Purafils CP Blend media is a 50/50 volumeblend of both activated carbon (Purakol media),and potassium-permanganate impregnated alu-mina (Purafil Chemisorbant media). BecausePurakol and Purafil media are effective atremoving different gaseous contaminants, bothare needed for complete gas removal.

    Purafil Products

Front Access System: Purafils Front System iscomposed of modular metal frames and mod-ules filled with dry chemical media. The systemis designed for retrofit into an existing air han-dling unit and is used in applications wherespace allows for installation in the direction ofairflow. The frames can be stacked horizontal-ly or vertically allowing for flexibility in terms ofsize and media bed depth.

The Commercial Purafil Side Access System:Purafils Side Access System contains drychemical media, filter tracking, side doors, andheavy support channels. The system isdesigned for retrofit and is preferred in applica-tions where space requires access from theside of the air handling unit, perpendicular tothe direction of airflow.

    Value-Added Service

Kannapell Rodgers Co. made regular follow-upservice calls to ensure Purafils systems werefunctioning at maximum efficiency. A test usingcorrosion classification coupons (CCCs) wasperformed to determine the environments cor-rosive severity level. An analysis of the CCCsrevealed that the gaseous concentrations werewell within the levels recommended for safearchival storage.

    Product Application

The Mohamed MahmoudKhalil Museum is exposed toheavy traffic and industrial pol-lution. Recent tests indicate ahigh level of contaminants inthe surrounding area.

These findings led architectDr. Ali Raafat and ShakerConsulting Group, the leadingconsulting groups in Egypt, toseek the highest quality airpurification and monitoringsystems available.

Gabtic International Company,Purafils representative inEgypt, provided documentedproof of Purafils ability tomeet these high standards. The Purafil OnGuard 2000Monitor is currently in use tomonitor the corrosive reactivi-ty level of the indoor environ-ment.

Purafil, Inc. specializes in theremoval of odorous, toxic, andcorrosive gases through gas-phase air purification. CallPurafil at (770) 662-8545 or(800) 222-6367 for immediateassistance with your air quali-ty concerns.
