Fair Guide

Welcome to another edition of the affordable art Fair. This is now our fourth year here in Hampstead, and the art on show continues to go from strength to strength. This edition of the fair sees 113 galleries, 22 of which are new to the fair this year, offering original pieces of contemporary art all for between £40 and £4,000.

This year sees a growing international flavour to the fair, with galleries gathering here in north London from as far afield as Spain (Alicia Rey, Brita prinz arte, StandarTe, and Villa del arte Galleries), Italy (Palma Arte), The Netherlands (Ronen Art Gallery, LionelGallery, Galerie NUMMER40, De KunstSalon), Denmark (Bruno Dahl), France (Galerie Olivia Ganancia), China (Art for all Society), Canada (Arteria) and the USA (Able Fine Art, Cancio Contemporary, DECORAZONgallery, and Raquelle Azran), to name but a few!

at the same time we’re still championing the best of the local art scene. The likes of Outline editions, my Life in art, Jealous, i-contemporary,

Highgate Contemporary art, go Figurative and Beardsmore prove that the artists and galleries here in north London are the match for any in the world. plus, we’re delighted to continue our partnership with made in arts London, who have curated an emerging artist showcase specifically for our fair. You can read more about that overleaf.

But in the end, when it comes to falling in love with a work of art, it doesn’t really matter where the artist or gallery comes from. it’s about that feeling you get when you see something that truly sings. There’s nothing like knowing you want to own a piece of art, and cherishing the creativity, originality and skill that’s gone into creating it. With work on show at the fair across a whole range of media – painting, photography, prints, sculpture and more – we hope there’s a little something that touches everyone.

enjoy the fair!

London Loves

Since our very first fair down south in Battersea way back in 1999, affordable art Fair now takes place in an incredible 12 cities across the world – from maastricht to mexico City. But London is where it all started, and London is still where we call home. We're delighted to announce our latest collaboration with made in arts London that will help to champion the wealth of artistic talent currently emerging in this great city.

Launched in 2012, Made in Arts London (MiAL) is a brilliant initiative from the six colleges that make up University of the Arts London (UAL), europe's largest arts education institution. By promoting and selling art and design by uaL students and recent graduates, miaL helps these artists to develop the skills, experience and connections necessary to sustain their creative practices beyond the world of their education. as angus montgomery, editor of design Week, put it: “made in arts London is a great initiative, which supports students and graduates at a crucial time in their career.”

it’s not just an opportunity for the artists; this showcase from miaL offers a great way for you to see – and invest in – the next generation of artists. For this instalment of affordable art Fair Hampstead, miaL are showing a curated exhibition of work entitled ‘Concrete island’. The show takes its name from a 1974 novel by JG Ballard in which a wealthy architect finds himself stranded on an island in the middle of the m4 motorway in west London. Look out in particular for the drawings of Camilla Brueton, whose work on Ballard informed the exhibition’s theme; the mixed media constructions of Cadi Froehlich; and the intensely personal, but formally innovative, photographic works of alexandra Wheeler.

The affordable art Fair has long sought to support the careers of exciting emerging artists. as Fair director romy Westwood says: “We have always tried to bridge the gap between the bubble of university life, where students are (quite rightly) free to focus entirely on their own artistic practice, and the big, wide world in which artists sell their work and make a living.”

emerging artist Jonathan gabb’s kaleidoscopic installation ‘Chameleon: mars Black + Cadmium Yellow’ will be unmissable in the entrance marquee of the Hampstead fair. Constructed from acrylic paint, cast into colourful strips, and suspended from walls and ceilings, viewers are encouraged to move around and explore Jonathan’s arrangements – you’ll never look at paint the same way again! Since graduating from The Cass School of art in 2008, Jonathan has been the recipient of a number of highly-coveted and competitive

awards, including the WW SOLO Award in 2012, and more recently the 2014 Saatchi Colour Showdown Competition – the most highly submitted art prize in the world. Jonathan was also nominated by axis in 2013 as one of ten contemporary artists to watch and invest in, confirming his status as one of the UK’s most exciting emerging artists. Jonathan’s installation has been kindly supported by Cass Art (cassart.co.uk), the UK’s leading art supplies retailer.

dinosaurs? in Hampstead? They may not have been here in the past, but they might well be coming in the future. Contemporary art duo Jake and dinos Chapman have proposed that a series of three dinosaur-shaped metal sculptures should grace the Heath for a twelve-month period starting this summer. The works would be the first large-scale piece of public art on Hampstead Heath since 2005, when Giancarlo Neri’s nine-metre-high, six-tonne table and chair attracted visitors from across the country.

even so, Leslie mare, from the Corporation of London which manages the Heath, commented at the time: “people seem to love it or hate it.” and the same looks set to be true of the Chapmans’ work. This is often the case with public art, especially in an environment as cherished as Hampstead Heath. No decision is ever going to please everyone: even the eiffel Tower was famously slammed as “useless and monstrous” by a committee of 300 leading French artists and architects before construction had even started. This hits upon a central problem in art – the importance, or otherwise, of the audience. eyestorm gallery, who are showing at this year’s fair, have worked with the likes of Rob and Nick Carter (whose Neon Circus provides a welcome

burst of colour on the roundabout outside the Museum of London) as well as Jeff Koons and abigail Lane, all well known for their public art. as Creative director, angie davey says: “public art will be seen by those who may not normally visit a gallery, but there still has to be a reason for it being there and this is very much taken into consideration by the artist making it”.

Such complexities are now being directly explored by public art itself. in 2015, Trafalgar Square’s Fourth plinth will be graced by Hans Haacke’s winning proposal, a skeletal bronze horse. it deliberately contrasts with a much more traditional piece of public memorial art, the statue of King George IV on horseback on the opposite side of the square. Then in 2016, on the same spot, comes david Shrigley’s “elongated thumbs up”, which questions whether public art can really fulfill the social functions that we demand of it. One solution is offered by multi-award winning artist Julia Vogl, whose ‘1000 opinions’ was one of the highlights of aaF Battersea back in 2011. Vogl works directly with local communities and audiences in order to incorporate their views within the finished installations: each colour in ‘1000 opinions’, for example, represented one type of idea on where to allocate a spare million of public spending. The resulting rainbow demonstrates that it’s not just politics that engenders an array of conflicting opinions, but public art too.

While this clearly causes difficulties for artists, it is also part of what makes art so endlessly fascinating in the first place. Fortunately for us at aaF, our visitors are primarily buying pieces of work to be displayed in the privacy of their own homes. This means that, although it is certainly worth finding out as much as you can about a work of art that interests you and the artist that produced it, ultimately it comes down to what you love – and you’re the only expert on that.

as our name suggests, the affordable art Fair is all about affordable art. and because printmaking produces multiple editions of the same work, prints are often one of the most affordable ways of collecting art. But times might be changing. The end of June sees two of the most important prints by pablo picasso up for auction at Sotheby’s. The last time the auction house sold one of picasso’s La minotauromachie, in 2010, it raised over $1.2million – that’s double the estimate. expect similar headlines this time round too.

The print market is looking extremely encouraging at the more affordable end too. at the end of 2013, for example, visitors could buy Tobias Till’s ‘Oranges and Lemons’ print, inspired by that old rhyme about the bells of St Clement’s, for less than £3,000. Now, only six months later, the framed print has zoomed over the £4K Affordable Art Fair’s upper limit, but you can still pick up the piece unframed for £4,000. Tag Fine arts will be also be showing Till’s classic London A–Z linocuts this week, alongside a beautiful diptych by Japanese woodcut artist Katsutoshi Yuasa.

as Tag’s Hobby Limon says “original prints are a brilliant, accessible and affordable way to start a collection.”

prints also offer the best chance to purchase work by some of contemporary art’s biggest names. Here at affordable art Fair Hampstead, manifold editions are showing works by some of the biggest names in contemporary art. Look out for woodcut spots by damien Hirst, and eye of History – a new set of editions by marc Quinn, whose sculpture alison Lapper pregnant was the first new commission for the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

explaining the appeal of printmaking, James Booth-Clibborn from manifold editions says: “the range of print techniques available means the pieces they create can be radically different in texture, colour and indeed experience. The techniques used in our pieces range through woodcut, linocut, screenprint, polymer gravure, and etching, to name but a few.”

Some printmakers focus exclusively on one of these disciplines, but for many others, printmaking is one part of a diverse art practice. artist Trevor price, for example, has been making prints ever since he was at art school, some 25 years ago. “my process of choice,” he says, “is drypoint, where a scratched mark on a soft surface (zinc or perspex, for example) will hold ink from both the scratch and resulting burr, to give a beautiful soft fuzzy line.” But Trevor is also a painter, and the two methods feed into each other all the time.

in addition to his own work here at aaF Hampstead, Trevor is also one of our printmakers in residence. along with friends and fellow printmakers mychael Barratt and Colin moore, Trevor will be encouraging visitors to have a go at printmaking for themselves, and learn about the huge variety of printmaking techniques that exist. It’s a great way to find out more about how printmaking actually works. plus, you’ll be able to spot them a mile off, with their eye-catching home-made printing machine. “each year,” Trevor says, “hundreds of hand-made prints are taken home from the fair by budding artists – both children and adults.”

Whether it comes to buying art, or making your own, deciding what you personally love is ultimately up to you. Before buying, Tag recommend checking provenance (which any gallerist will be happy to chat to you about) and looking for small editions. “When original prints sell out,” Hobby observes, “the value goes up.” and that’s clearly what’s happening when it comes to the rising prices for the likes of picasso and Tobias Till. But in the end, it’s about what speaks to you. as Hobby puts it: “go with your heart!”
