Online to on-siteWhile many people think additional training may not benefi t them, Kevin Sutcliffe, Training Coordinator with GO2
Skills and Training, believes it will.
“Let’s say you did a Cert IV in Safety,” Mr
Sutcliffe said. “Even if the jobs you were
going for weren’t safety roles, those extra
skills and knowledge are looked upon
favourably.”
A sizeable aspect of training in recent years
has been held online but Mr Sutcliffe believes
face-to-face training is more effective.
“A large part of our population has tried
an online course at some point or another
and not fi nished,” he said. “Learners need
a sounding board to bounce ideas and
concepts off – you just don’t get that from a
website.
“A good trainer and assessor is essentially
a people-person and can decipher what
makes the individual tick. It is the little things
a trainer does in terms of helping students
develop their own cognitive skills, which is
the real advantage.”
Mr Sutcliffe said he did not rule out online
training but was a strong advocate for on-
site training, a specialty service of GO2 Skills
and Training.
“There’s so many benefi ts to it,” he said of
on-site training. “It provides clients with an
unbiased resource that doesn’t get wrapped
up in the offi ce politics.
“In-house training departments are often
seen as a proponent of change - humans
generally don’t like change, so when
rolling out training on new procedures or
equipment it’s a real advantage to be able
to do it with a ‘clean slate’, so to speak.
“If we can turn up on-site and teach it makes
it so much easier.”
The on-site training is a part of the
organisation’s commitment to fl exibility.
“Flexibility matters a lot to the learner – and
it matters a lot to their family and their
employer,” Mr Sutcliffe said.
Training will upgrade your skillsWhether you’re starting a new
career, want a bit of a step up in
your current one or just want to

Get closer to your careerLove watching Masterchef? A career
in hospitality may be for you.
The Australian College of Applied Education
(ACAE) teaches a huge variety of subjects
and is the only private training provider
to deliver training to Australian chef
apprentices.
School of Culinary Arts Director Max
Tangermann said the cookery and patisserie
program – which teaches students to
become professional chefs and patissiers –
was strongly supported and recognised by
the culinary industry.
“We use techniques and ingredients related
to what is happening in the industry right
now,” he said. “We try to have close contact
with the industry and I think this is our
main strength as we can react quickly and
prepare students.”
Mr Tangermann, who has been at the
college for 15 years, said previous graduates
were performing excellently in the workplace.
“From the very early days, I have seen many
people coming through this course and they
are now successful chefs all over the world,”
he said.
“I recently visited my former students in New
York and had a look at their operations and
their restaurants – it was fantastic seeing
them.”
Mark Simmons, an ex-student of Mr
Tangermann who attended ACAE in 1999,
now owns and runs a restaurant in Brooklyn,
New York called Kiwiana.
Following his ACAE education and an
apprenticeship at Perth’s Parmelia Hilton, Mr
Simmons went to Melbourne, then to Japan
where he discovered the Japanese cuisine
style.
Following this, Mr Simmons became part of
the popular American reality TV show Top
Chef and opened his popular restaurant in
New York.
“He’s doing extremely well for himself as
he built his restaurant from scratch,” Mr
Tangermann said. “He’s got some fantastic
dishes on his menu and the restaurant has a
real homely feel to it.”
ACAE is an award-winning and highly-
respected Registered Training Organisation
(RTO) and was awarded the WA
International Training provider of the Year
2012. It was also a fi nalist for the WA Small
Training Provider of the Year award.
Located in the heart of Perth’s CBD, ACAE incorporates four schools, all with strong industry links:
• School of Business and Management
• School of Accounting and Finance
• School of Tourism and Hotel Management
• School of Culinary Arts
The college has taken its students closer to achieving their career goals, including becoming apprentice chefs, developing careers in hospitality, events and tourism, and gaining qualifi cations in business and management.
An exciting and rewarding careerEstablished for more than 20 years, the Perth College of Beauty
Therapy is a leader in makeup training and has name recognition in the
industry, with its accreditations recognised worldwide.
Studying the Diploma of Specialist
Makeup Services at the college gives
students the opportunity to pursue an
exciting, creative and rewarding career
as a makeup artist, working alongside
fashion photographers and designers.
In 2011, the college moved into a
fabulous new building with a purpose-
built makeup studio.
“I’ve loved every minute of the initial two
months,” Diploma of Specialty Makeup
Services student Denis said.
“Everything – every bit of information I
have learnt whilst here I have already
been applying in my makeup application
in the workplace and at home.”
The next course starts on January 14,
2013, with classes three days a week
for six months, and there are no pre-
requisites to join.
The fun and unique course is designed
to prepare students for a career in the
entertainment, fashion, fi lm, TV, bridal,
theatre, beauty and retail industries. It
combines theory, demonstrations and

Students will create a portfolio of work,
a professional photographic album,

A quantum leapStudents at QANTM College can choose from a number of interesting,
thought-provoking programs taught by industry-experienced lecturers, with
programs available in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney.
These programs include a Bachelor
of Creative Media degree majoring in
Graphic Design, a Bachelor of Interactive
Entertainment majoring in Interactive
Media or Animation and majors in Games
Programming and Games Design.
The Perth campus currently offers two
bachelor degree majors which, with a 50-
week per year operational period, can be
completed within two intensive years.
These are the Bachelor of Interactive
Entertainment (major in Animation) and the
Bachelor of Interactive Entertainment (major
in Games Design).
Animation students at
QANTM will graduate
well-versed in all aspects
of the creative process,
from the earliest stages
of concept design to its
implementation in various
interactive entertainment platforms.
In addition to creative and practical skills
involved in animation production, students
will also be exposed to the business
aspects of the industry.
“One of the great aspects of SAE QANTM
is the industry connections both inside
and outside the classroom,” Aaron Welch,
QANTM graduate and proprietor of www.
redbirdcreative.com.au, said.
“Not just the lecturers but all the staff have
lots of experience which they are more than
happy to share. Thanks to my awesome
lecturer Dan Moller, I was inspired to do
my best and push myself to graduate with
highest 3D animation skills possible.”
QANTM Colleges are HE and VET-
accredited educational providers and are
FEE HELP and VET FEE HELP approved. Qualifi cations easier than you thinkOver the past decade the number of Western Australia’s major oil and
gas, mining and construction projects has boomed, creating a huge
amount of jobs and causing a labour shortage of qualifi ed welders.
“Welding trades are already short of
qualifi ed capable welders,” co-owner of
the Australian Welding Academy Joanne
Olsen said. “It’s already well and truly
here – we are dealing with employers in
a daily basis.”
The lack of welders has created an
opportunity for talented tradespeople
in the profession to earn large amounts
of money – however, with the mining
industry’s stringent qualifi cation
requirements, it is becoming increasingly
diffi cult to get high-paying jobs without
formal qualifi cations.
“There are a massive number of guys
working in the industry as welders
very confi dently, who have no formal
qualifi cations,” Mrs Olsen said.
“Everyone wants to get the good paying
jobs and to get those jobs you need to
have the minimum requirements, that are
either trade qualifi cations – for example
Certifi cate III – or the ability to pass
coded welder qualifi cations.”
It’s not only people who don’t have the
qualifi cations who may need to do a
course – international qualifi cations are
also commonly not recognised.
“There are a lot of guys from overseas
who fi nd that their qualifi cations aren’t
recognised in Australia who may be
eligible to go through the Recognition
of Prior Learning process as well,” Mrs
Olsen said.
Mrs Olsen said getting the relevant
qualifi cations was a great idea for
tradespeople, even if they didn’t
currently need them.
“It’s a relatively small investment in their
future which allows them the potential
to open millions of doors, that without
those formal qualifi cation will be closed
to them,” she said.

A career evolution, aligning skills and dreams Dr Andrew Papa-Adams changed the direction of his career and took control of his future by studying an MBA
through the Curtin Graduate School of Business.
A practising doctor, he felt a desire to move
into business but lacked the skills in this
area.
Having trained as a doctor in the UK, Dr
Papa-Adams worked in this fi eld for almost
four years including roles at Joondalup
Hospital and St John of God Subiaco and
Murdoch, before deciding medicine wasn’t
for him. The doctor still had a passion for
working in healthcare, so he decided to
diversify.
After gradually moving out of medicine,
Dr Papa-Adams found himself working as
Marketing Manager for Oceanic Medical
Imaging, a position he held for three years
despite initially having no experience in the
fi eld. Despite his natural ability, he lacked the
confi dence to move ahead.
Dr Papa-Adams was encouraged by his
colleagues to investigate an MBA at Curtin
University because of its reputation for
graduates that are able to hit the ground
running in their chosen fi eld and the strong
network of industry contacts.
In January, shortly after completion of his
MBA, he was appointed Chief Executive
Offi cer of Oceanic Medical Imaging. Before
his appointment, four directors ran the
company.
The Curtin MBA enabled him to use his
medical knowledge and apply it to the
business world, where his heart lay.
“I knew medicine was not for me but I didn’t
want to waste my medical skills,” Dr Papa-
Adams said.
“Oceanic Medical Imaging had such a good
vision and mission. I knew I was well-aligned
with it so my extra study allowed me to stay
with the company in a role I desired and was
passionate about.
“Studying an MBA in CBS allowed me to
develop my skills in the areas that were
needed to reach my goals.
“I found the lecturers so helpful and
appreciated the fl exibility of the degree and
the support that was given.
“The MBA was perfect for me, but I would
say, even to people who are not looking to
pursue the entire MBA, a little bit of business
knowledge would help anyone running their
own business, even doctors with their own
practice.”

Sounds like a great careerThinking about a career in sound? It could be closer than you think
with a stint at SAE Perth.
Michael Unwin, aka drum and bass
producer Niwun, is a graduate of both
the Certifi cate III in Music and Diploma of
Sound Production in Perth.
He now works as the Digital Arts Offi cer
for the City of Swan and part-time
technician at ABC where he assists with
broadcasting sporting events – namely
AFL, WAFL and cricket.
“The majority of my technical knowledge
as well as a good knowledge of the
creative audio industry and how it
operates were learnt at SAE Institute,”
Mr Unwin said.
“Probably more important to me though
is the fact that I’ve been welcomed into
a network of like-minded individuals and
developed a great set of connections.”
Aside from this Mr Unwin recently signed
two tracks to UK-based independent
record label Ruin Me Records.
“The label is headed by drum and bass
producer Marianas, and he will be
remixing my track Silicon Funk which will
be released alongside the original,” Mr
Unwin said.
He plans to release a couple more
singles in the coming months.

Qualifi ed for safetyHealth and safety qualifi cations are becoming increasingly important, with
corporations seeking to assure themselves they are advised by suitably-
qualifi ed professionals.
“With the introduction of new Harmonised
Work Health and Safety laws imminent, or
in some states already passed into law, it is
becoming increasing evident that offi cers of
corporations, (generally management), need
to ensure that they are advised by suitably
qualifi ed professionals,” General Manager
of Workplace Safety Solutions at IFAP Ross
Pratt said.
Mr Pratt said that while a Certifi cate IV
in Occupational Safety and Health had
traditionally been seen as the entry-level
qualifi cation to gain employment in the
safety and health fi eld, this scenario was
rapidly changing.
He said it was widely recognised in
industry that an appropriate blend of formal
qualifi cations at a tertiary level and relevant
experience in the fi eld were essential for
the development of a safety and health
professional.
General Manager for Offshore and Maritime
at IFAP Mark Small agreed.
“It is essential – without hands-on
experience it is hard for people to apply the
theory that they have learnt,” he said.
According to Mr Pratt, senior managers
are becoming more aware of the need for
sound knowledge in workplace health and
safety.
A better understanding of the
commensurate liability they carry in
their positions is driving many to seek
management-level training in workplace
health and safety laws and systems.
Mr Pratt said IFAP had also seen a
marked increase in participation by
senior management in training courses
such as Managing Safety and Legal
Responsibilities.

Opportunities for everyoneKingston Training and Employment and DNA Nursing Australia offer diverse
career opportunities ranging from welding, occupational health and safety
management, to dental nursing qualifi cations.
Certifi cates III and IV in Dental Assisting
provide graduates with a 99 per cent
employment rate in the dental industry.
Additionally, the Diploma in Dental
Technology is full-time for international
students with apprenticeship opportunities
for local students.
Ex-dental student Lucie Heil had a great
time studying at the DNA South Perth Bank
Clinic, choosing dental nursing after her
partner – already in the dental industry –
inspired her to take it up.
“I found the lecturers at the college to
be very professional in their approach to
ensuring students are well looked after in all
aspects of their study and provided great
support and help throughout the course,”
Ms Heil said.
“I found studying nursing to be very
interesting with the learning structure based
on a combination of theory classes and
clinical practical sessions.”
Ms Heil found a part-time job as a dental
nurse just once month after studying.
“As the college is very fl exible and
understanding to students’ needs, I was
able to change my studies to part time in the
last term and be concentrated on my full-
time job now,” she said.
“The qualifi cations gained through DNA
Nursing Australia enable me to specialise
or further my studies in other areas of
dentistry.”
With experienced trainers and excellent
facilities, Kingston Training offers welding
(engineering) training for all skill levels,
requiring codes or a formal qualifi cation such
as Certifi cate II, III and IV in Engineering.
The Certifi cate IV in OHS and Diploma and

available in traineeships, part-time, full-time
or correspondence modes.
The programs provide graduates with
excellent opportunities for employment

Safety the right wayAs well as the obvious danger of falling when working at heights, there
are many dangers when working in confi ned spaces.
“Some of these are potential unknown
gases when working in confi ned spaces,
oxygen depletion or excess, fl ammable
ranges, LEL’s or UEL’s which can lead to
exposure to serious injury and/or death,”
Saferight General Manager Lynda Willis
said.
Leaders in the fi eld, Saferight has been
working for more than 22 years with
a specialised focus on height safety,
confi ned space and rescue training.
The company is a Registered Training
Organisation, offering a wide range of
nationally-accredited courses.
The curriculum for each course covers
the applicable skills and techniques as
well as the relevant knowledge required
of the OSH Regulations, Australian
Standards and Industry Codes.
Saferight has recently added scaffolding
courses to complement its range of
courses in industrial safety, now offering
training courses for basic, intermediate
and advanced scaffolding, as well as
verifi cation of competencies for all three
skillsets.
The company has fully-equipped
purpose-built training facilities – two
based in Belmont, Perth, one in Tom
Price and a facility in Queensland.
“Our training facilities have been
purpose-built to suit the needs of
our clients within the construction,
commercial, mining, government utilities
and defence industries,” Ms Willis said.
Saferight can conduct on-site courses
anywhere in the world, allowing the
skills and knowledge gained during the
training to be applied in actual work
situations.
To accompany their safety training, the
company manufacturers and designs
a range of safety products and offers
experience and expertise in supplying
Safety Shutdown Supervisors, rope
