Adobe® Acrobat® 3D software , the newest member of the Acrobat software family, enables engineering and technical professionals to publish and share 3D design information from major CAD applications with virtually any computer user, significantly enhancing collaboration within extended design and manufacturing teams. The result can be improved accuracy and a reduction in design and manufacturing costs, effort, and time to market. With Acrobat 3D, professionals in automotive, aerospace, electronics, and other industries can easily convert 3D designs—from a wide variety of proprietary CAD formats—into cross-platform, more secure, reliable Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. When enabled by Acrobat 3D, suppliers, partners, clients, and other extended team members can use the free Adobe Reader® 7.0* software for the first time to review and add comments directly onto interactive 3D objects embedded within Adobe PDF files. Team members no longer need expensive specialty viewers to review and comment on 3D designs created in proprietary CAD applications. With the virtually ubiquitous Adobe Reader, more people than ever before can now participate in the review of complex engineering projects.

Easily Share Complex Design Concepts Most engineering projects are costly and complex, requiring frequent collaboration among multiple parties. Sharing detailed designs and other documents is critical. At the same time, it’s essential to protect confidential information. By leveraging the free Adobe Reader, Acrobat 3D allows project team members to affordably, easily, reliably—and more securely—share 3D CAD files with virtually any computer user.

Convert 3D content from major CAD applications into Adobe PDF files—Acrobat 3D allows users to convert interactive 3D content from major CAD applications into compact Adobe PDF files for easy sharing and commenting. Three-dimensional CAD content can be published as Adobe PDF files using any of three methods: By simply dragging the content into Acrobat 3D; by right-clicking the desired file and selecting the Adobe PDF conversion option from a context menu; and via the 3D Capture Utility, a utility included with Acrobat 3D that allows users to quickly capture a 3D file displayed on screen and convert it to Adobe PDF on computers using Microsoft® Windows® and UNIX® operating systems.

Combine 3D files with other documents—Acrobat 3D enables users to convert virtually any documents, such as e-mail, spreadsheets, and Microsoft Visio diagrams into Adobe PDF files. Professionals can insert 3D CAD designs into Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint files and, using Acrobat 3D, convert them into Adobe PDF. Three-dimensional CAD content converted into Adobe PDF can then be combined with other Adobe PDF files into one single, comprehensive project document. The compound Adobe PDF document enables team members to quickly, easily convey the contextual details and scope of a complex project to anyone with the free Adobe Reader*—which can help save time and improve accuracy.

Add comments using familiar Acrobat tools—When enabled by Acrobat 3D, users of Adobe Reader* can now add comments and use standard Acrobat markup tools directly on 3D objects within Adobe PDF files. Extended team members can define multiple cross-sections of a 3D object to view internal structures and assembly relationships, as well as measure dimensions in a 3D design to provide more accurate comments.

Easily track and gather feedback—Acrobat 3D lets users efficiently manage comments from multiple reviewers instead of having to manually reconcile confusing, conflicting rewrites. Initiating e-mail-based reviews is simple, and comments from multiple reviewers appear together in one Adobe PDF file for easy viewing.

Protect Confidential Information—Acrobat 3D provides advanced security controls to better protect sensitive Adobe PDF documents. Password protection restricts access, printing, editing, and other actions. Specific security settings can be created for and applied to designated users or user groups. Digital signatures help ensure authenticity. When integrated with Adobe® LiveCycle™ Policy Server software, Acrobat 3D users can create a server-managed security policy and apply it in one step to Adobe PDF documents. For instance, users can create an Adobe PDF file that can give one reviewer read-only access for five days, while another reviewer can read and print it for 10 days, after which access to the document expires. Additionally, integration with Adobe LiveCycle Policy Server enables authors to revise or revoke rights to documents—even after they’ve been distributed—at any time.

Create Rich, Interactive DocumentsAcrobat 3D enables users to create rich, interactive documents with 3D content, which can provide CAD designers, training manual authors, and others with even more flexibility and costs savings.

Publish inexpensive, interactive documents—3D line art is routinely used in printed technical documentation as illustrations. However, line art made from 3D objects can be time-consuming to produce for publication, as the line art must often be redrawn using a program such as Adobe Illustrator® software. Also, the information conveyed in a published illustration can become outdated and is often unable to aid understanding as effectively as an interactive 3D object, which can be rotated for multiple viewing angles.

Alternatively, Acrobat 3D enables users to publish technical documents as Adobe PDF files with interactive 3D illustrations. The documents can cost far less to produce and can be easily updated. Also, the interactive 3D objects provide much more information and context than a flat, printed illustration.

Further enhance interactivity—Right-clicking a 3D object in Acrobat 3D launches the integrated Acrobat 3D Toolkit application. With the 3D Toolkit, users can create animations, such as exploded views; edit lighting; change the textures and materials of an object; and save their changes as a 3D object or as a 2D raster or vector image. Users can also add JavaScript™ to any Adobe PDF file containing 3D designs to enhance interactivity and understanding.
