The historyWith the exceptions of the 1904 and 1928 Games, Shooting has featured on every Olympic programme since the first modern Games in 1896. Women’s events were added to the schedule in 1984. Marksmen and women from more than 100 countries took part in the Beijing 2008 competition.
The basicsOlympic Shooting events fall broadly into three types: Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun events. In Rifle and Pistol events, competitors aim at a 10-ringed target from a set distance (10m, 25m or 50m). In Shotgun events, competitors shoot at moving clay targets launched above and in front of them.
Depending on the event, athletes are required to shoot from standing, kneeling or prone positions.
In the five Rifle events and the five Pistol events, shooters take part in two rounds, the qualification and the final. The scores in each round are added together to give a total score, which determines the winners of the medals. There are also two rounds in the five Shotgun events, with the scores from the qualification and final rounds added together to determine the rankings.
Find out more about Shooting – pick up an official London 2012 daily or souvenir programme at the event.
Having been practised competitively for centuries, the tense and demanding sport of Shooting is now popular all over the world.
Inside the venuePlease do your bit for the environment – take your rubbish home or help us
recycle it by following the coloured icons on the bins, and on food and drink packaging.
Smoking is not permitted, except in designated areas.
In recognition of Visa’s longstanding support of the
Olympic Games, only Visa (debit, credit and prepaid) and cash can be used for purchases inside the venue. Contactless payment is also available.
