Career: Is a professor at the Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian
Institute of Science,Bangalore. Has worked at TIFR and Univeristy of
Mumbai. Is a Staff Associate of the International Centre for theoretical
Physics (ICTP) and has been a visiting professor at University of Dortmund (Germany),
CERN(Geneva),DESY(Hamburg) and Univ. of Utrecht (Netherlands). Recipient of Van der
Walls Chair at the Amsterdam Institute of Physics and Astronomy.
Scientific Work: Worked extensively on different aspects of particle phenomenology over
the past three decades, authoring more than 280 research publications in refereed journals and
arxived eprints.Author of graduate level monographs and text books on advanced topics for
Ph.D studentsand researchers in particle physics.
Election to Academies:Elected fellow of all the three science academies of India (INSA ,
IASc and NASI) as well as The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), currently being Vice
President of the National Academy of Sciences (NASI), India.
Memberships of National/International Committees: She is a member of many important
committees at the National and International level.Board of Governors of Indian Institute of
Technology (Powai) and the Council of Indian Statistical Institute are examples of the
former. Linear Collider Board and Detector Advisory Group for the International Linear
Collider and Commission C11 of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics is an
example of the latter. She has been a member of Scientific Advisory Committee tothe
Cabinet (SAC-C).
Editorial :She has been Chief Editor, Pramana, Indian Journal of Physics, 2008- 2016 and
AssociateEditor 1998-2008 as well as a member of the Editorial Board of Current Science
and is currently Associate Editor of Dialogue, a new journal started by the Indian Academy
of Sciences. She has been a member of the Editorial Baord of 'TRIPS 'series in India.
Educational initiatives:Chair, the planning committee for SERC schools in Theoretical High
Energy Physics in India,(member since 1997, Chair since 2005); One of the founders of the
successful series of workshopson High Energy Physics Phenomenology (WHEPP) which
have been running from 1992.
Some of the Awards & Distinctions :She has many won awards and distinction out of
which some recent ones are: The distinguished alumnus Award of the Indian Institute of
Technology (Powai), TIFR Alumni Association award for Excellence in Research, S.N. Bose
medal of the INSA for Theoretical Physics, Meghnad Saha Award for Physics of the Asiatic
Society of India, DST J C Bose Fellowship of the Government of India, 'Honoris Causa' from
S.N.D.T Women's University, Prof. Archna Sharma Memorial lecture award of NASI etc.
Activities related to Women in Science: Plenary speaker at the first International
Conference on Women in Physics organised by the International Union of Pure and Applied
Physics (IUPAP) as the 'Indian Success Story'. Co-edited a book 'Lilavati's Daughters:
Women Scientists of India', containing (auto)biographical sketches of about 100 Women
Scientists of India, released in December 2005 and also a book called 'A Girls' Guide to a
Life in Science' containing material to inspire young girls to take up a career in Science. She
is the founding chair of the Academy panel for women in science and is a member of the
Interacademy panel for women in Science. She is editor/author of many reports on women in
science in India. Worked towards pioneering a variety of programs, at various fora , to raise
awareness on the subject of Women in Science.
