Mary Sharp is an inter-nationally respected con-sultant to caregivers of peo-ple who have dementia. Her presentations have been standing-room-only in places like New York City, Dallas, Seattle, and no, southern Missouri. She has inspired caregivers across the US and Canada as well as in Scotland, Ireland and Fiji. She is coming because her good friend and fel-low advocate for excellence in elder care, Janet Gard, has arranged (through her company, Hospice Compas-sus) to sponsor and host this very special meeting. The title of the program is “Making Beautiful Mo-ments.”

The two met almost ten years ago when Janet at-tended a conference where Mary Sharp was the fea-tured speaker. There was an immediate connection, and they have worked to-gether in and around south-ern Missouri many times.

The presentation is tar-geted to members of fami-lies (and friends) who have a loved one with a form of dementia. Currently, one-third of Americans die of dementia (particularly Al-zheimer’s disease). That number will increase dra-matically in the next 20 years.

Approximately 75 per-cent of people with demen-tia are cared for at home. In addition to the emotional pain and physical fatigue of 24/7 care, Sharp says the most debilitating aspect is the frustration of not be-ing able to communicate in usual ways. She explains the importance of what she calls an “AS IS” attitude, not correcting matters of low importance and simple changes in communication that make for visits that are enjoyable.

There are many excel-lent presentations and read-ing materials about demen-

tia, especially Alzheimer’s disease, on subjects like the biology of the brain (what’s happening) and findings from research.

Mary’s presentations focus solely on aspects of communication and mak-ing life less stressful. Hers is a “been there, done that” reflection of what she learned during the 15 years she cared for her mother and the following 10 years in which she has worked with family and profes-sional caregivers around the world.

Those who have attend-ed similar meetings most often have two comments, “I’m so glad to find a person who really understands,” and “I wish others in my family had been here.”

This presentation is de-scribed as more a discus-sion of audience concerns than a lecture. It will be live and not a video broadcast. The efforts of many are coming together to make the meeting possible.

The generous sponsor-ship of Hospice Compassus, means there is no charge to attend. The meeting is scheduled for Friday, Sep-tember 19, 9:00 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Monett Park South on Hwy 37-60.

It is requested that you call (417) 235-9097 for Monett program if you plan to attend. A handout will be provided and the meet-ing planners would like to know how many to print.

Garden group preps for final two meetings of year

Front Porch Conversa-tions with Garden People, a garden group that meets every second Thursday of the month in the lower level of the Cassville Branch Li-brary at 7 p.m., has only two meetings left before the break for winter.

On September 11, Au-tumn Gardening, presented by Doyle Ferguson, will be held. Ferguson owns and operates Aurora Green-house, Floral and Gifts and has been featured in maga-zines and newspaper ar-ticles. This will be an eclec-tic session full of valuable hints, tips and advice from a nursery owner with both

flower and vegetable gar-deners in mind.

On October 9, Extreme Companion Gardening, presented by Charlie Pha-neuf, will be held. Phaneuf is a master gardener intern, permaculture designer, and local farmer. Garden enthu-siasts interested in sustain-ability will enjoy the topic.

Front Porch Conversa-tions with Garden People is open to anyone, and they encourage everyone to come early adn stay late to visit and share ideas, con-cerns and successes of gar-dening in the Ozarks. For more information, call the Library at (417) 847-2121.
