You will still be able to “look up here.”The Crab Cooker restaurant, a family-

owned Newport Beach institution, receivedunanimous approval from the city PlanningCommission Thursday to retain the iconic,fish-shaped sign that has beckoned cus-tomers to its dining room at Newport Boul-evard and 22nd Street for decades.

“Don’t look up here,” the neon red hali-but irreverently declares.

But for generations, diners have done justthat as they crossed under the sign to eatDungeness crab cakes and other fruits ofthe sea off paper plates in the landmark eat-ery — except during the last year and a half.The restaurant has been under reconstruc-tion during that time after foundation dam-age related to construction of the condo-miniums next door.

Tearing down and rebuilding on thesame spot made more economic sense tothe Crab Cooker’s owners than renovations,so in September 2018 the building camedown after serving as the restaurant’s homefor 67 years.

Now, with construction nearing its end,it’s time for some detail work, like seekingan exception for the whimsical sign thatwould otherwise be out of code. The restau-rant has other, more conventional identifi-ers facing 22nd and Newport Boulevard,and the fish would have exceeded the gen-erally allowed total amount of signage.

A fish out of scale, as it were.But the city had a way to grandfather in

the fish — declare it a “heritage sign” for itshistorical and visual significance.

The commission readily agreed.“I thought this application was a little

fishy,” commission chair Peter Koettingsaid, “but I won’t be crabby about it.”

The commission also permitted therestaurant to retain its green, old-world-style street clock and matching exteriorbenches overhanging the sidewalk.

The replacement building, on track foropening this summer, will be roughly thesame size as its predecessor and have a sim-ilar layout, with an airy, semi-enclosed pa-tio, larger restrooms and a second floor forstorage. In addition to the fish sign, the ex-terior will retain its familiar fire engine-hued walls and green-and-white-stripedawnings.

And the menu will be the same. A dozenemployees have stayed with the companyworking at the Crab Cooker’s sister restau-rant in Tustin, smoking fish and makingchowder to the north, said owner JimWasko.

“We very much look forward to bringingit back to Newport Beach, our home,” hesaid.
